Green Heart Family Farm
США
Добавлен 24 фев 2019
We are a family of five; Jarvis, Tina, Arya, James, and Ivy. We purchased 50 acres in late 2019 to pursue our dream of establishing a homestead farm. So far we have jumped into building and moving into a yurt, adding grazing animals, and jumping into farm life with both feet.
We still have a lot of work to do but we are so excited to work hard, improve our property, and live the best, most fulfilling life we can.

Planting Our First Silvopasture Tree Rows
Просмотров 3128 месяцев назад
This video covers our work from Feb 2024 to Apr 2024 planting 431 trees with the goal of developing "silvopasture", a incorporation of trees into livestock pastures. Our goals included adding shade and tree fodder to our pastures, designing the tree rows such that they double as livestock fencing, and to include the planting of fruit and nut trees for eventual food production. Worm Composting Toilet System - December 2023 (Update 2)
Просмотров 1,5 тыс.Год назад
Another update on our vermicompsting toilet system; at this point the system has been active for 3.5 years. Main new news from this year: 1) Needed to clean out and maintain more clearance at the drainage of the greywater. 2) Alternating between the two waste tanks quarterly is resulting in fantastic performance and plenty of processing power from the worms to serve our family of 5.

Worm Composting Toilet System - December 2022 (Update 1)
Nice fence , you will be able to put many of your berry bushes / vines around the inside as you have sturdy posts to train them too. If you have thought of going down that road.? Does it not snow where you are in Oregon, as I was wondering why you didn't insulate the chicken coop.?? Will there be aby windows for the chickens?? Love the garden and hope to see the tall stalks of corn next season plus everything else you and your children like to eat. Will there be a Timelapse Video of the Yurt deck and roof coming any time soon. What about using sawdust that comes free from your mill for coop floor,.?? Personally, if I was your guys I would make a pretty big chicken run and cover it, leave the sides fabric clothed so you will have less chance of any bird flu. I would hate to see you loose your flock.
Yep, we've already ordered some grape vines to plant in a few months!
Another great update! Always something to work on at your farm, whether maintaining/ repairing, or adding something. You explain each thing well. I guess you don't get much snow in the winter.
Thanks for the encouraging words! Cool and wet is our typical winter weather. We may get a snow a few times, but most of our precipitation all winter long is rain.
Next year would you be able to keep records of how much each totem produced?
So, did it "cure" him?😊
yes, we got rid of the mites
Thanks for your periodic update for the viewers. You always have a lot going on there on the farm. You share a lot of detail for us. I am curious, what are the ages of your children now? Please give us a winter update.
Will do! The kids are 13, 9, and almost 4 now. When we first moved onto the farm they were 8, 4, and unborn. Crazy how time flies!
The differencethe wood trim made is amazing.
Yeah, trim pulled the whole project together!
yea, shit-can the %$#!! music !!! y u sheeples do that ...wtf!!
As a midwife, I will stop everything to watch a RUclips family have a baby. And as a soon-to-be yurt dweller, I love seeing how everything came together.
Thanks! Our beautiful Ivy is almost 4 already <3
I would love an update on how you've experienced yurt life over the past few years. Likes, dislikes, things you would have done differently?
Yeah, we are planning to make some time to do that this winter. Long story short, we're really happy with it, over 4 years in now.
I've watched a LOT of yurt videos as I prepare to move myself and six kids into a yurt, and so far, I like your layout the best. It looks beautiful and functional.
Thanks! We love it!
How does it do in the colder months?
We shut it down for the winter because we don't need the water in our wettest part of the year, and the creek rises much higher. I've seen other builds that keep running through the winter, though.
Thanks so much for sharing this, looking to install one in our yurt also. It didn't look like you used any kind of flashing or anything when you vented through the sidewall? Curious how the exhaust vent exits the yurt? I couldn't tell in the video, does the exhaust vent just attach to the vent cover/cap on the outside of the yurt? Thanks for any help you can share from your experience :)
Around the 4 minute mark you can see the vent exiting. Tucked it under the roof fabric and later use some clear sealant.
Thanks for your update. Lots of hard work by your family shows quite an accomplishment!
Thanks! We are really enjoying being able to keep making progress.
Beatiful job! Looks great, glad i saw your video !
Thank you! Sitting next to it now with one of our first fires of year 4 of using the stove.
How was the heat during the summer? Was there any issues with warm weather?
The system is going great during the summer; I've never notice worms dying of heat or anything like that.
I was wondering why there weren't plans to put a door in, so you could go to the bathroom from the bedroom.Maybe a pocket door can be installed . I just noticed this video was made years ago. Sorry if I wasted your time. I bet a lot has changed since the making of the video. Here's hoping you & yer family have lived just like you dreamt It was going to be.( Well close to it ) I wish good things & good health for you and your 's.😊 have lived
Thanks! We love the yurt, over 4 years in at this point. We never saw a need for a door between bedroom and bathroom; it would take up valuable space, and it's a very short walk anyways.
@Green Heart Family, the black perferated pipe with fabric wraped around it was inserted into the tank and fixed into place with rocks ... how does the poop find way out of the perferations and fabric in the pipe?
It doesn't; that keeps solids so the worms can work on the solids, and lets liquids flow out.
@@Green_Heart_Family_Farm Oh okay, so the poop fills the perferated pipe covered in fabric, and worms are already in this space, so they eat the poop : ) If the worms are on the outside of the fabric, they probably would not be able to enter the perferated pipe?
This video is incredible. Thank you for sharing. Do you use a flush toilet and if so how much water per flush?
Thanks! Standard flush toilet in the US.
use a cloth for drying yourselves, no need to use extra paper & toss it right after....
09:42 why not subdividing the 2 outer pipes into 6 or 8 subpipes so you cover a larger area? Planting some apple trees there can give you the most delicious cider :)
Hello again thanks again for all the responses we are dried in in our yurt finally! Question when you say thimble kit are you talking about the through wall kit? Thanks green heart for the inspiration and information!
Yep that's right, the thimble is the through the wall kit. Congrats, and good luck with continuing your set up!
Thanks man appreciate you!
Awesome, this vid has been a great help!
So glad to hear! We're getting ready for our 5th winter season using this stove.
With the mulching teeth, how much of a stump is left above grade? Does it grind down flush with the ground or does it leave an inch or two? I ask because I would like to eventually use a zero turn mower once the grass grows back. Thanks.
It can beat up rotten stumps, but I don't try to use it with fresh stumps. I just use a stump grinder.
I know I’m late to the party but I am REALLY interested to know if there is any smell - from the tanks OR the final drain area?? Thanks in advance!
Really no smell until you take the lid off and get into the tank. As far as walking around in daily life, we don't smell anything.
@@Green_Heart_Family_Farm Amazing. Thank you so much for getting back to me and for your very informative and helpful video! I’m needing all the help I can get. Subbed.
So interesting to see the homestead grow. Learning so much.
Thanks, really appreciate you telling us!
New to channel hi from Colorado Springs 😀
Hi, welcome and thank you for saying hello!
The greenhouse looks great. You will have to ventilate it really well because it will get extremely hot in there on sunny days.
Thanks! Yes, ventilation and cooling is on our mind for the summer time. Vents and fans will definitely be used, and potentially misters.
That sounds great to me. Another thing to do would be to have some thermal mass inside to store the heat, such as rain barrels full of water.@@Green_Heart_Family_Farm
@@Jade-d I love the idea of using thermal mass, because that will be helpful in the winter as well.
Thanks for the update at your homestead. Lots of progress!
Thanks! Feeling good about our progress.
What do you do when that ibc tank is full?
Check out the follow-up videos, we go over some troubleshooting about that over the years of operating it. Long story short, we've figured out how to operate it, alternating between two tanks, so we never get full and run out of space.
I think it would be beneficial to close some of the open areas in the chicken tractor to reduce the effect of cold on egg production.
As usual, thanks for the update on the greenhouse. It's looking great! Lots of progress so far. Good family involvement.
Thanks! Yeah I was glad the kids were able to come help during this phase.
I think creating a dropdown for the pipe along with an L bend fitting should help with the clogging. The bottom of the dropdown area would be gravel bedding then soil on top. If you plant wetlands plants that would filter the ground faster as well.
Yep, these are great ideas, thanks!
What size is this yurt?
30ft diameter from Pacific Yurts
I really like the design
Thank you!
those poplar post will rot away in less than a year.
How was this method compared to others harvest wise
We're only 1 early harvest in, so we'll see; I'm hoping these big logs turn out to be more prolific than our smaller logs.
You have a good water plan and explained it well. What is the latest on the old pink house?
Thanks! Old pink house is acting as a workshop; the miter saw bench and work tables are getting a good amount of work while I prep materials. Haven't got around to some of the other improvements I'd like to do; plumbing, electrical, etc.
Thats a beautiful yurt! I wonder how many meters pf diameter has? Thx!
30 foot diameter from Pacific Yurts; thank you for the kind words!
@@Green_Heart_Family_Farm thats great! I guess is good enough for a family like yours, enjoy it!!, 🥳🥳🥳🥳 thanks for your answer. 😊
Is there a website out there that shows the step by step for this?
Not that I know of; we followed the instructions that came from our yurt manufacturer, Pacific Yurts.
@@Green_Heart_Family_Farm thank you, looks great
This will be a very strong greenhouse! Great work!
Thank you!
Nice job on the Greenhouse, did you mill all that lumber as well? Your children are growing so fast, it must be all that homegrown food.
Thanks! Yes, I milled all the lumber for the greenhouse. The kids are definitely eating and growing!
What's your breed of black bear? Looks extra friendly.
Olaf is a Newfoundland; he is the sweetest boy <3
how did you treat the pasture so they didn't get reinfected?
Nothing at all; they came to our farm infected because they were kept in poor conditions. Keeping the pigs out on pasture for years after this video was filmed, including having 20+ piglets, we never saw another case of mange mites.
I have found that the best deer deterrent is a Winchester, even if you are not too skilled with your Winchester it sure makes a point like no other deer deterrent and the bigger the better, Remington will also work. Lead poisoning is a terrible thing. Since I live near others, I use only chicken wire, barb wire, and my latest fishing line fence, and I have no landscaping left and will not reinvest in that again! The deer love my cucumber leaves, and Iam not too happy about that ether.
Great video. Planning a similar install. I saw a different video where guy make his hearth with hardiboard like you, then pavers, then slate tile. Your approach (without the pavers) seems easier, but do you have any thoughts on that? Other than watch you-tube videos, how does one know how a hearth should be designed? Thanks for these wonderful videos you've created.
Glad you like it! I've been perfectly happy with the slate tile, and I don't think I'm missing anything without a layer of pavers. Maybe they just wanted to build up some height for the stove pad? I recall researching recommended clearances for the stove during the planning stages. You've got it, good luck!
Switching tanks every month or so helps to regulate temperature. The waste breaking down creates heat so in summer you dont want to overheat it and in winter you add to both so they dont get too cold
Yes, switching tanks more often seems to really help the system!
Hi! What a lovely place! Really good kitchen! It fits really well, I wonder how many meters the your Yurt is? Thanks! 🎉
Thank you! 30ft diameter, so about 10m diameter.
@@Green_Heart_Family_Farm thanks 🙏🏽 it’s lovely space
Hi there, I love your deco and yurt. Looks amazing and exactly the set up we would like to build on our property. I have a few questions about the deck, is there some way we can speak?
Thanks for the kind words. We're really busy lately but I could possibly set up time aside time for a consult if you're interested in that.
Oh nooo at 9:35 Toby said, “I knew that was gonna happen!” Looks so hard to do with one person!
Great work on the greenhouse! You showed a lot of detail of what you did. I look forward to your next video with the trusses.
Thanks! Really excited to get those trusses up there.
