Super interesting. My pigs have been gentle with the bulkheads so far, but every now and then, I get a drip. I used to put my waterers atop CMUs, but recently built wooden box frames that are much lighter. I cut 4 lengths of 2x4: 16, 20, and 24 inch so that the box has 3 different heights. As the pigs age, I just change which height the barrel stands on. So much easier than CMUs!

I use a large crescent wrench on the tractor shaft and rotate it just slightly to feel the grooves line up and remove the wrench and on with the lock collar it goes. You have to have the tractor turned off and have to get in there with the pto shaft you can’t do it from a spectators position. Works like a charm ever.

The struggle is real!!!! My backhoe was sitting for 2-1/2 years. When I went to disengage the bushhog to hook the backhoe, the spline was rusted onto the shaft. I had to use some heat and a prybar to separate it. When I went to attach the bushhog again, I wire brushed the splines and coated it with Never Seize. Still, it was hard to connect. But next time it should be rust free.

Great option. I think it does depend on the pig though. My sow loves it and fully understood the assignment. However, our boar has gone through 2 bulkheads in like a month. He just doesn’t get to drink out of it instead of mess with it until you break it to get water out.

FYI... a controller like this manages your energiser as well. As others have said; 1 Plug battery into controller 2 Plug solar panel into controller 3 Plug client (energiser) into controller Everything runs via the controller, not directly to each other. The haywire reading on the controller at approximately 11:20 in the video is because you have the energiser connected directly to the battery. The numbers would be going up and down in time with the energiser pulse. Apparently (I'm still learning so don't quote me on this, but) you should have 10 watts in your solar panel for every joule in your energiser unit to effectively charge the battery with the energiser at full strength. But, unless you're trying to keep out lions or elephants, or maybe keep in an overzealous raging bull, you probably shouldn't ever need your energiser running at full strength. If you're finding it's not strong enough at low power, check that you have an adequate grounding system.

If you also spray some silicone lubricant on the pto it will make a world of difference!

Been building waterers for several years. your process is still complicated and expensive. Drill your hole, heat barrel use bolt with same thread as nipple. Thread using bolt. Remove bolt, crew in nipples done. You can also us same process and add a drain valve at bottom. 15-20 min done and no glue ot tape.

Great idea! Don't why I didn't think of this! It's a pain to hook-up bushhogs...so anything one can do to make it a little easier helps!

So i made a chicken tractor a lot like these years ago but for hoop i used hog panels. Its heavy and i didn't move it much but that was my fault. The back fell off the first move so instead of hearding chickens again it stayed put

I agree with Greg. We castrate later now. In the past, we would try to castrate as close to birth as possible and you rapidly learn how strong a calf is.

When I have an old dead pine tree, if I can clear around the base and safely burn, I just start a fire at the base of the tree. If the tree is dead/dry enough, it will burn up into the roots.

Nice design, however the bolts you put in the kevlar hinge you should have just put them in reverse. Having the smooth end of the carriage bolt coming into contact with hog and the nut side on top other than that it's pretty nice.

I just threaded the nipples directly to the barrel. I’m guessing this is prone to leaking eventually?
