“Some Notes I Took This Morning,” January 9, 2025
The Sentimentalist is wearing his new shirt, happily, while unhappily describing the perilous state of college sports and big tech, which, separately and together, may not be making the world better after all. The dog, on the other hand, will only work for bribes. It’s a sort of tableau vivant for these times, dontcha think?

The tree, the tree! The piney incense, the family recipes, the good books and quieting of the wild world. In spite of all the madness, (spite is the right word), there are sleeping dogs, cherished memories, good friends who carry us through what is hard and harder. Focusing on the good stuff is a form of rebellion. And necessary for building your strength. However you observe this season, we ho...

When the world and the news are too much. Just stop and plug in here. "Only connect," head to heart, thoughts to feelings. Put down the catastrophizing book, turn off the immobilizing movies, look away from the news. Instead watch the fifth annual Landscapes of Poetry Holiday Reading. These people will connect with you. I promise. Please enjoy the poetry of Jack Ridl, Robbi Hartt, Peg Padnos, J...

The Sentimentalist’s house is infested with electricians working to drag us into this century. Pardon the winking and blinking! If you can be drunk on poetry, we are. Hung over from last night’s Landscapes of Poetry reading in which more than a dozen of us read brain-bathing poems in memory of Marianna and her siblings. It’s been a year. And poetry persists, with a little from our friends…

Coming to you from inside a blizzardy blizzard, complete with power outages, blinding squalls and ice, ice, Baby. George Saunders’ loving toughness is on our minds, along with making our place cozy and Santa-infested. Hope you and yours are keeping warm and lit. Mark Dec 11 for the big Landscapes Reading!

It’s just another day when we are thankful for you! We are holiday multi-tasking, filming the show while watching the parade and making dinner, and even the dog is in a jumble. The antidote is always slowing down and picking up your needles.

What is this stuff falling out of the sky? The dog cannot be bribed. Good to know someone can’t. Getting ready for the big holiday reading with the Landscapes of Poetry crew. We met last night, and are still riding on the art of it all.

Thank The Goodness for dogs and friends and the memory of noble ancestors, and lovingkindness teachers. And, of course, poems in hard times. There is so much to fix, and we are tired. On we go. Welcome to The Sentimentalist.

Replaying the local launch and the New Hampshire Poetry Society show with its focus on mental health. And thankful for all who came out for them. And delighted that the new book is already in a second printing. (Have we shone the light on CavanKerry Press lately?) The dog is certainly spunky. (We think it’s the arthritis meds.) And the Asian Lady beetles are not being harmed in Julie’s catch an...

It’s book report day! The Sentimentalist shows off his stack of new books from old friends and 1 daughter. The dog won’t leave the front door. What does she know that we don’t? Probably plenty. And a baseball poem, a metaphor for being unable to see what’s ahead of us.

Hurricanes and floods and tornadoes and neighbors gone and grief, and more grief, and the dog is grieving too. But a powerful poem (wait for the last word). Don’t let it fool you. (The producer would have you note we have finally (?) solved for lighting. With big thanks to all advisors!!!)

Good morning Jack & Julie from Summerland Key! Wish you were here in the Keys. Today it's all sunshine but very cold. I think our churches should to create a Holy Order of Sentimentalists. You will be the first candidate for Ordination at the Ridl Abbey..
Good to see you’re up, taking nourishment, and slinging stories. Vivi agrees and is doing a great job at stealing the show.😮
Happy new year from France
I too use a Rolodex!!! I'm 80
Blessed New Year! Alles Gute im neuen Jahr!
Have a happy and gentle new year, Jack and Julie from Ginger in Idaho.
I love that shirt!! Happy New Year!!
Happy New Year Jack!!
Technology has brought it all in to us, yes, but it also brings us you and others like you! That is what helps me with all the bad news. That and the ability to reach out to others.
Blessed New Year to you and Julie!
Happy New Year Ridl family :-) Greetings from Belgium.
And I thought that I was the only Belgian Jack Ridl fan. 😊
hope you and the sweetheart pup are having a lovely winter and end of the year jack 🩷
I'm so grateful the RUclips algorithm in its mysterious wisdom brought you into my life, sir. "Putting Away the Santas" reminded me of my mother and her multitude of nutcrackers. She must have half a hundred by now. As I sit here on a snowy Canadian Boxing Day, your readings have moved me deeply, and I thank you. Have a lovely 2025.
Can’t put away our Santas yet! We wait at least til the 12th Day of Christmas!
Merry Christmas! To you and your family
Have a lovely Christmas!
Thank you. Merry Christmas from Maine.
Thanks Jack and Julie for coming into our Summerland home this morning. So many good memories of friends and holiday seasons. Saw the Civic Theatre's fabulous production of CATS three times. Memory Song by Andrew Lloyd Webber, Sarah Brightman Midnight Not a sound from the pavement Has the moon lost her memory? She is smiling alone In the lamplight The withered leaves collect at my feet And the wind begins to moan Memory All alone in the moonlight I can smile at the old days Life was beautiful then I remember The time I knew what happiness was Let the memory live again Every street lamp Seems to beat A fatalistic warning Someone mutters And a street lamp gutters And soon it will be morning Daylight I must wait for the sunrise I must think of a new life And I mustn't give in When the dawn comes Tonight will be a memory too And a new life will begin Burnt out ends of smoky days The stale cold smell of morning The street lamp dies Another night is over Another day is dawning Touch me It's so easy to leave me All alone with my memory Of my days in the sun If you touch me You'll understand what happiness is Look a new day has begun Songwriters: Andrew Lloyd Webber, T. Merry Christmas, Professor Ridl!
Love this!
Merry Christmas to you and your family.
How wonderful to listen to these!
Merry Christmas, Jack, and to your wife, too. So far, it's been lovely for me, even with the deep sadness of loss not that long behind me. My cat helped me. It's better now. 🙂☕
Checked oout Stockli , of course. :-)
Installing a heat pump!? 😀
I am so glad to find this. I missed it live and was so bummed. Thank you for posting it for us to enjoy after the fact!
It was an honor to listen to Landscape’s finest poets! Thank you for sharing such a wonderful video. Happy Holidays to all!
Thank you so much, Jack and Julie and ALL of you, for sharing these wonderful gems with us. I am so touched, Jack, by your inclusion of Bonnie and Tom and me in the Landscapes Holiday Reading. I’m sure, somewhere in the universe, Marianna was smiling down on all of us. I am so sorry I couldn’t be there during the live reading. A work event got in the way, as I believe it did last year. I am very grateful to spend this evening being moved and healed by everyone’s words. A peaceful and joyous Holiday Season to you all. Kate M.
Jack, you look marvelous and the poems. Man, these poets are fantastic! And you Jack are the BEST!
Happy Holidays!!!!!!!
Love that poem, Jack! Thank you!
it is december 12th
Jack I just watched your December 5th you tube and we had 74 mph winds here in South Haven. I loved the poem, I had back surgery yesterday at Bronson, Kalamazoo (Implant device to stop the PAIN from my brain to my lower back, "If I Only Had A Brain" So says sings the scarecrow from the Wizard of Oz"! Love Ya Man! You are a poet and you should know it!
Thank you for the poem dear friend
Let's remain sentimental!
I just love visiting with you each week! Heavy snow here in Upstate NY...4-5 ft in spots. High winds and whiteout conditions. Warm cup of coffee and your beautiful poem! Thank you!
I appreciate today's poem.
Lovely broadcast, lovely scenery in the back, .... Thank you and greetings from Belgium.
I Love your talk as always. I have close friends who I truly love who voted for ‘him.’ Early on, feeling the same as you mentioned about responsibility, I decided to not allow it to get in the way of my love for them. I still hold that decision, as they are all good humans. If, when all shakes loose, if I say anything at all, it’ll be ‘life is about the choices we make.. sadly many voted for this.’ Mic drop.
What a wonderful poem. Thank you!
There's no snow here in Kentucky, but it's very cold. Sunny and cold. Going up to 30 degrees later, but not yet at 10:58 am. No, I don't have a dog right now, though my deceased husband and I has had our share of Collies and Shelties. Two of each, though not at the same time. Our two kids grew up with one or the other. I now have a female cat named Tiggy. 😊☕ (I, too, love coffee.)
Lovely thanksgiving greetings from Jan in Belgium
