We like to keep ourselves hidden, so don't tell anyone about us! Very interesting review, especially since you didn't go for (just) the tourist traps. Ljubljana is quite geared up towards tourism, though, but there are many lesser known destinations in the country that are just as nice. Or you can go for some instagrammable tours: start the day by skiing in the Alps (or snowboarding, or ice-wall climbing), and finish it with a dip in the Mediterranean Sea in the afternoon (albeit a chilly one); or start on an Alipine road at 6500+ feet and finish the day 400 ft underground in a cave; go white water rafting or canoeing in the Alps in the morning and finish the day getting pampered at a hot water spring spa on the Panonia flatland. The restaurant where you had the pork used to be - in the days before the railway, when cargo was transported by horse drawn carts - a place for them to rest overnight. At the time it was on the outskirts of the town, but if you look at the city grid, three major routes join right in front of it.The restaurant still has a horse and carriage as their logo. The black liquid in the pumpkin soup was (likely) pumpkin seed oil. It's quite popular in the eastern parts of the country, and you can buy it at the farmers' market. You're doing better than most with the pronunciation. The secret is that we're too lazy to write our vowels, but the sounds are there. Sometimes we even pronounce consonants as vowels (especially the l at the end of a word as u) - and no, it's not confusing at all :-) Whenever you feel your tongue is breaking over the consonants, just stick a short e in there (eg. the word for rose is vrtnica, but is pronounced vertnica). If you ever visit again and want to impress the locals, there's basically three tricks to the pronunciation: J is always pronounced as Y (there is no J sound in Slovene), C is always C (never K or S - this one trips up most English speakers), and the L at the end of a word is U. If you want to be really fancy, then get a hang of the three special characters, the C, S and Z with the v on top (č,š,ž), pronounced as CH, SH and ZH. And this is about it. Though honestly, just about anyone younger than 60 will be happy to talk to you in English, to get some practice in.
