Rare Disease Day Katie's insight
Просмотров 65Год назад
It's Rare Disease Day! Our very own Katie Dexter shares an insight into what it is like living with a rare disease. Katie has Primary Cillary Dyskinesia (PCD) which is a genetic disease that affects the structure and motility of the hair-like structures called cillia. When cillia are healthy and motile, they beat in synchrony to keep the airways clear of mucous. However, when the cillia are def...
How do we safely image animals in a research laboratory?
Просмотров 1692 года назад
This is a short film covering some of the basics of imaging animals such as mice, rats, and rabbits, in our MILabs micro-CT and optical imaging scanner. This scanner is located in a research department, and we hope that this short film will help you understand how we look after our animals during imaging, and some basics of how this imaging works. If you want more information on fluorescence, c...

Transmission Electron Microscopy renal pathology
Просмотров 4582 года назад
This video explores renal (kidney) pathology, which is one of the many diagnostic uses for transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Biopsies of the kidney are taken from patients and a tiny piece is sent to us for viewing at very high magnifications. The TEM allows us to see the glomerulus of the kidney, which is where blood is ultrafiltrated, and to look for small ultrastructural changes or imm...
Femoral head bone tissue which has been decalcified, stained with heavy metals.

First microCT results show the cartilage, subchondral bone and trabecular bone layers. Secondly, SBFSEM is used on a sub-volume to image osteocytes at higher resolution. Segmentation of the SBF SEM data allows identification of the cells, nucleus, mitochondria and cell processes. (created by Patricia Goggin)

That's so cool! When magnifying enough, you might even see Biden's brain.

you'd be pretty hot, as a general rule, if you lost some of that tummy flab. I know this comment is fundamentally offensive.. but I don't care. What I care more about is how appealing and charismatic you are, Melissa.... and simply, that if you lost that paunch, you'd be quite the panty's worth. Look... think about it. that's all i'm saying

Excellent video. That model of ultramicrotome is beautiful. I think it is a Reichert Jung OMU3. The macro images showing slices being coaxed onto a grid are very nice.

I worked in the EM lab (SSEM and TEM) of Dr. Bruce Wetzel at the NIH. As a darkroom tech. I printed all the images generated by the electon microscopes. One of my favorite images was of a female Schistosome with her mate. :visualsonline.cancer.gov/details.cfm?imageid=1762
