My 500S idling. Rough and unedited. This is a very underrated machine, one of the most interesting thumpers in existence. Very few actually made (about 4000). In the 70's.

Here is a very brief opinion on owning a second hand BMW R1150R. Some of the issues I had and other things I wished I knew when buying one. Good review but I have to correct somepart of it. The rattling noise dissapearing when the clutch lever is pressed is coming from the rod pushed from the slave cylinder in the back which is inside of the shaft connected with the splines of clutch. The rod is inside the shaft with a felt wrapped around to prevent dust and oil entering from the back to the front. New felt cuts the noise but after a while it rattles again, it is not related to the clutch situation

    I bought a Sanglas 500 S2 V5 in the UK in 1983. It was a 1979 model which had sat in a bike shop window for 4 years, no-one bought it because it was expensive and nobody had heard of Sanglas motorcycles. I was offered it very cheaply so he could get rid of it. £1229 official price in 1979, I paid £695. It was still new with zero miles on it. It was a great bike, I did many miles including touring France and Spain. I sold it after 1 year for £400 as nobody wanted to buy it. Top speed 85mph and did 70 miles per gallon. Hi mate I recently bought a Classic 500, only done 1300kms. The check engine light seems to turn on when I turn on the fuel pump switch (not the key ignition). It then turns off after I start the engine whether it be kickstart or electric. Does this happen with your bike? Should I be concerned?

    Very relaible engines. Some came out the factory without Abs system.. those are the good one….

    • @poatemaine6200
      @poatemaine6200 2 года назад

      yep, the engine itself is quite reliable, everything around it perhaps not so much, mainly because of the complexity and the silly engineering mistakes like the Getrag transmission not engaging properly with the shaft, cheapskate plastics where it should be metal and so on. If I will getting another BMW it would only be an old airhead, /5 or /6 series.

    How is this bike to ride around and push a little bit? Does it give good satisfaction under wide open throttle? Is it expensive to maintain in current day?

      1. As it seems you lift, you should have no problem, but for a scrawny person I do not recommend it, its over 250kg. 2 Yes, good torque and power, its a big engine, albeit different than a Japanese inline four, is not so revvy and torque starts VERY low. For its weight is agile, but my previous 750 GSXR would have ran circles around it. 3. I would say yes, if you rely on dealerships or decent shops. Imagine to purge the brakes you have to do front circuit, then rear circuit, then ABS circuit. If you want to change clutch you basically split the bike in half. I recommend an earlier airhead BMW, they used to be sooo much simpler back in the day.

      The Telelever handles wonderfully,loves to attack the twisties and the oilhead motor loves to be revved...

      @@ziyasrevenge there used to be a time when BMW had good engineering and a lot of common sense. Not so much in the last 20 odd years. Perhaps is a change of philosophy in the sense that lately you are supposed to take the bike to a shop for them to make $$$ rather than fix it yourself. Otherwise the battery under tank idea should have never left the meeting room.

    lovely looking bike. its a shame the second hand prices have gone silly. here in the UK people are trying to sell them for more than they cost new.

    • @poatemaine6200
      @poatemaine6200 2 года назад

      I kind of see why, given that the new models have nothing to do with the old OHV. But I would honestly be just as happy with a second hand one with 3000 plus on the odo. These bikes are seldom used to their potential, people get bored and they end up as garage decoration. I bought this bike not just because looks, but for the authenticity with a touch of modern conveniences such as abs and FI. Of course you can buy an old bike but in my experience 60 year old bikes are very inconvenient to own and especially use.

    I've got gunmetal grey 500 classic, I tried the new 350 the other day, it was characterless compared to the 500. The more you ride them the better it gets!!

    • @poatemaine6200
      @poatemaine6200 2 года назад

      I agree, that's one of the reasons I went for the last 500 ohv. It was clear that the new 350s with the modern ohc architecture, while more performant and reliable (allegedly) were going to lose the last traits of classic singles. But that is a nuance you catch much easier if you had close contact with old thumpers at some point before trying these enfields. The new 350 sounds good, looks good, but the feeling just aint right... Just like in a dream, you can tell something is amiss.

    Gorgeous machine, as far as i'm aware one or two of the Tribute versions made their way over here to Ireland, i'd love to see one of them in person.

      wow that seems like a very low number out of the 200 (?) or so that made their way to that part of the world (brit isles & eire). I guess if you really wanted one you can watch the second hand market. I have already seen a few pop up in my home market.
