Catching a 500 lb shark while kayak cod fishing || Almost lost my finger!
Просмотров 3 тыс.3 месяца назад
Hey folks, This is an exciting one to say the least. My buddy, Scott, hooked a 500 lb Porbeagle shark while we were out cod fishing from our kayaks here in Newfoundland. This footage is from his GoPro. It dragged both him and his wife upwind into my boat, putting me between him and the shark when it finally came up to the surface 15 feet away from me and started swimming toward us! Yes, I know ...

Hey, folks! This was a beauty of a spring day that I had to get out and do some exploring. The audio is a little wonky as I was trying out a new camera mount. There was also no talking to film as aside from speaking to Mia, that's how I enjoy spending these days. Hope you enjoy and see you on the next one!

Thanks very much! 🤙🏼🧡
Not good, I am hearing about too many sharks lately.........great footage bud.
It's nothing new. Our waters have always had lots of sharks. Just more people out with cameras now is all.
I feel like you could easily do more outdoor related tutorials like this. Great job!
Very much appreciated! I usually get sick of hearing my gums flappin' by the time I'm done editing so I'll cut it all and just have mostly ASMR lol I have a few videos in mind once this heat packs off. 🤙🏼
Very informative video Matt. I dont have a sea kayak, but i would like to join you guys in my costco boat. Maybe sometime in Aug?
Much appreciated, Dave! Shoot me a message any time you're wanting to go and I'll let you know where we'll be.
Awesome video Matt, great information and clearly explaned , wish I was close to tag along. Good luck on Saturday and Tight Lines Cod tight not shark tight 😅
Much appreciated, Garry! I don't mind the scattered exciting shark encounter, but I'm hoping they don't get much closer than that lol
Hey Matt. Just wondering why I never received my goodies from your drawing about 2 years ago. Thanks for sharing your video. ATB Mike from Chicago.
Hey Mike, I figured it arrived with no problem as I never heard from you since. Good ol' Canada Post. That's long lost now. I'll do up another package and get it out to you. I'll see about adding a tracking # this time lol

Really great lesson! I am sure your fishing outing will be a success! Hopefully you are able to film some of it. I think it would be a good video to watch!
Thanks very much! The GoPro will be filming this trip just in case something happens lol
@@canoeanddogexplorers nice!
Oh me nerves, that was a rush, even watching
Lol yeah I still get it when I watch too. Crazy times.
great video! is this in Chapel Arm, Trinity Bay?
Thanks very much! This was in the Torbay, Middle Cove, Outer Cove area.
Is this Newfoundland?
It is indeed. Just on the eastern tip of the avalon peninsula.
Thats crazy Good thing they dont dont see humans as food.
Agreed 100% 🤙🏼
Crazy Newfies
Lol I've never been accused of being a genius!
@@canoeanddogexplorers You did well was quick thinking to cut the line, good thing you did not cut your finger tho. Alot of people would have panicked
Thank you, but it did cut my finger. It was braided line and it sliced right through 3 layers of skin and bled pretty bad. The line was only wrapped once so I was lucky. Had it been wrapped even twice then I 100% would have lost my finger. I've never been one to panic in any situation, and that's a good thing when you're doing foolish things like this! Lol 🤙🏼
Wow Matt, that's the big one you're glad that got away.
Yeah I wasn't upset that it wasn't curious about anything lol
Wow that is crazy!!!
It definitely was that!
Wicked 😎🤙
It definitely was that!
World record porbeagle is 2.8M - not to say there isn’t bigger out there!
Yeah, I read the same articles, but there's an endless amount of links and federal documents online that show them at 12' and possibly bigger. It surfaced just 15 - 20 feet away from us(gopro footage is horrible for gauging distance) so we could see that the dorsal fin and tail were 6-7 feet apart and with the dorsal fin being ever so slightly forward of center, that definitely puts it at 12', if not more. Scott(the guy who hooked it) worked on fishing boats for years and has seen ~ hundreds of porbeagles pulled up onto the deck so that plus looking at the shape of the dorsal fin we figured it was a Porbeagle. I'm not too upset that it didn't come closer for us to be 100% sure though lol
Yes that was close enough lol! Glad you’re all safe!
It's all fun and games until someone shits their pants
There was likely a little extra detergent used on their drysuits that evening. Lol
Hahaha wild
That's one word to describe it. Gonna see if we can replicate that this weekend lol
after doing this for 18 years, this one day I will not forget, part of the reason we do it. 2nd or 3rd most memorable kayaks, that laugh is also up there..lol kayak on
The list of unbelievable memories we've made on paddles is a very long one, and I agree that this is somewhere in the top 3! 🤙🏼🧡
And just like that my thoughts of sea kayaking are gone 😂
Lol yeah I figure this will change a few minds!
Why would you carry pellets with when you're surrounded by fuel?
Same reason I carried an almost 3 lt stainless steel pot instead of 500 ml titanium pot and a camera to film it all because I had it and wanted to try it out. I like to practice with as many options as are available. 🤙🏼
Your sound is not stereo.
Good to know, thanks!
No better feeling than loading the open camp fire up with wood! Enjoyed this. Thanks for sharing and greetings from Northern Ireland ☘
I couldn't agree more! Having a kettle hung over the fire makes it that much more enjoyable! Cheers! 🤙🏻🧡🔥
Great video, friend ♥️♥️
Much appreciated! 🤙🏻🧡
I use a spin cast or open face and I do use a fly from time to time. This was Kool!
I use both as well, but as long as conditions allow, I choose the fly rod.

That was a great time fishing for sure......my style is trout with the fly rod also.
I've been troutin' for 40 years but only the last 5 or so years have I been primarily using the fly rod. It's a 4wt so even the small ones feel like a good little fight lol
Wonderful stuff...some pretty great catching going on there!!
Thanks very much! The real fishing trip is next week! I'm doing an extended version of a trip I done this time 2 years ago. I have a video on it called Into the Wilderness. This time I'm going to be focused on fishing.
Nice trip, friend.
Thanks very much. I'm actually planning an extended version of this same trip for next week.
Awesome day fishing skipper
I've definitely had worse lol To make the best of it, before I even started fishing I went to the spot(in the woods) where I lost the foot from my camp chair while I was ice fishing and I found it, and I also found a $50 sit pad not far from there so I cleaned up before I even started catching! 🤙🏻
@@canoeanddogexplorers deadly day indeed lol

Is that a Haliburton Huskytail paddle?
No sir, it's a Bending Branches 14° bent Sunburst XL. This thing is amazing!
Awesome day on the pond buddy
Indeed sir!
Now there's a beautiful way to spend a day!! Such a great silent endeavor being out in a canoe. Excellent!
Couldn't agree more! 🤙🏻🧡
Babbling on again.. (-: About a decade ago I ran across another live working blacksmith at a reenactment show/actors campout. He sold me a Pigtail hook of 12"+ length, which works perfect for my 3 piece tripod rod using one section/leg. Height adjustment in a jiffy at the upright. ~ Since it looks like you canoe camp often I thought the simple item, although wrought iron-esque would do you well with slightly heavy gear. ~ Any branch of proper dia. stuck to earth yer done, with ez adjustable. Keep your eyes open for one. (-:
I generally only use this method in winter as the snow obviously offers practically limitless options for anchor points. I'll often times make a tripod this time of year and carve a little pot hook so then I can adjust the height to whatever works for what I'm doing.
Looks like a 14cm Zebra Billy with modded clips. I have one and wanted to steam in it without drilling holes in the bowl as some did. ~ I found that a 5" folding/collapsible as butterfly wings basket fits inside and opens when inside just enough for steamer use. Not much space below the basket for much water, but just enough before all boiled off, and I grabbed a SS plain Jane cookie cutter (tall as can find round) to sit below the basket giving just a smidge height for more water. ~ Water being a commodity it steams with very little water. It steams up full load load veggies just fine. I've not tried fish yet, but some steam their fishys vs oil 'n such. (can river water be used for steaming without being treated? ~ there's a plus) ~~ Both steamer basket with cookie cutter nested in basket nests inside the Billy, wrapped in paper towel for no rattle. (dew rag prolly betta) Stainless steel steamer baskets vary in size and not costly. Aim for one with tallest legs that can find. My 5" will expand to 9 or 10" with center post for lifting for other pots/pan use. ~ Cookie cutter? ha, there's one in case 1day you try biscuits ay? Before use I took a hair blow dryer to the huge Zebra sticker and it peeled right off. Someday it'll be a pain I thought. If Zebra tac welded a pivoting ring on the side for a lift aid it would be perfect.
It is the 14 cm but the clips are factory, and they're a game changer! Great for pouring water when it's too hot to touch once they're clipped onto the handle, and they're the only way that the inverted oven will work. I don't bother with steaming anything while I'm camping, so I haven't used it for that or researched any mods to make that more practical. And biscuits are on the list! Lol
It was a great trip by the looks of it and enjoyable cup of coffee.......
It's a great run for knocking the dust off the ol' portage muscles lol You're just far enough back that it's nice and quiet too.
Great spot, wish that road had never existed though☹️ Thanks for the video 👍👍
Yeah it's a shame that was approved. I remember the first time we portaged into Old Sea from Peak Pond and came across that road. This was before it was shown on Google Maps so to say that I was beyond shocked is an understatement.

Enjoyed watching this video. Very relaxing. Wish I could do it,especially with such a wonderful dog. Looking forward to more of the same 4:01
Just wondering why you have opted to stop including commentary? Great video but Im always interested in hearing thoughts feeling interpretations.
I can appreciate that and I completely understand. The main reason is the audio quality of the GoPro cameras that I'm using lately. I have no shortage of ideas for videos that will contain plenty of commentary, a lot of which are going to be gear review and fun challenge videos, and shout-out videos, but I have to get a few things figured out first, so bear with me. I appreciate your support!
@@canoeanddogexplorers THAT makes perfect sense. Im with you. Had the same issues myself with the GoPro. Keep em coming.
Another great video my friend , so relaxing I feel like I was right there listening to the padle stroke and the water go by. Thanks for taking us along

Bit of rain to start by strong finish. Near little oven buddy. Love the trips.
Yeah I don't mind the rain. At least I had enough Gore-tex to keep it off me. I went back in a few days later and didn't have any rain gear and it turned out the forecast wasn't very accurate so it was a less than comfortable paddle out lol That combo is definitely pretty neat for having at camp.
Awesome video, first time I've seen that done to make an oven from a pot, excellent job my buddy.
Thanks very much. Not my first time using that setup! Lol 🤙🏻🧡
