You know that show you like? Or youtuber or whatever? Yeah I kinda look into the audience of those, rather than the show itself, just so we can see why it is certain groups of people enjoy them.

SPOILERS: Good Damage is one of my favourite episodes of Season 6 of Bojack Horseman, where we see Diane go through the creative process of trying to "Sell her trauma" as it were in the form of a selection of essays on good damage and how it shapes us into the person we are today. Only she's struggling to write that book... Twitter: LukaMorganite #bojackhorseman #dianenguyen #videoe...

never seen the gun crime one, but, LOL.... if you see gun crime, you would report it
Uhhh MTV was 1984
ok i havent ever experienced an actual emotional gut punch before but the "your damage isnt interesting and you're unworthy of love" thing legitemately broke me for a second
The thing I find most interesting that I haven't seen anyone bring up is how Diane herself used escapism to temporarily escape her horrible home life. It wasn't a gritty, angsty essay piece that got her through the tough times. It was a silly campy show caller Horsin' Around. Sometimes trying to create more serious, edgy pieces runs the risk of missing its target audience because its so depressing. Having a bit of escapism that occasionally talks about and brings light to hard topics can be better than trying to bare it all for the world to see.
If I could point one thing out - the reluctance to accept Guy's coat isn't because of Mr. Peanutbutter's lavish gifts. I'm not really sure PB had a habit of gifting her expensive things, he just likes to surprise Diane in grand gestures like turning a room into a ball pit, not throwing her a Chanel bag. This was before Diane actually moved to Chicago, she and Guy were just in Chicago for a few weeks covering a story, and her reluctance to accept Guy's gift is a symbol of her reluctance to commit to a serious relationship with Guy. It's cold but she won't buy a jacket because she's not living in here, she lives in L.A., when it makes so much more sense to just accept the gift and put the jacket on! (or to give Guy and Chicago a chance.)
What video is this at 7:32 it tickles my brain like im oretty sure i used to be obsessed with the guy who made it a few years ago but now its entirely slipped my mind
On RUclips, every now and then I will search for or YT will give me the clip of Ivy Tran: Mall Detective. It holds a special place in me - Probably cause I used to really want to write mystery novels as a kid, but creatively I've gone in a different direction in my writing (more of a modern fantasy gal now). This video hits the nail on my coffin of 1) why I love this show 2) My own creative struggles, especially as of late (standing at 9 project files with only 3 being worked on). Thank you for opening up and sharing your experience - I very much appreciate it.
Three years later. Guess you were wrong?
I always liked the "so what's it gonna be" one
I dont know if youre still doing videos man but i honestly hope you start up again at some point. you have really good insights and id like to hear more, espeially on your comments related to bojack horseman
i’m a very old farm boy & haven’t regularly watched tv since the early 1980s so many of these were a new experience although i have a feeling the farm danger film was updated in the 1980s & of more gruesome or dramatic nature. Hey - very old folk might have noticed the anti drink drive Barmans’ impression of the lads’ dad was actually a fairly decent impression of Harry H Corbett from Steptoe & Son. I literally expected him to add “ You dirty old man !! “ very extensive - must’ve taken up a lot of your time. Thanks from woods near Bournemouth 😃🐢🐀👽🍒
I’m so glad I stumbled upon this video. You’ve put an answer to why Halo’s game environments have always held an irresistible allure for me. This question has eaten away at my mind since I was a child, and now thanks to you I finally have a term for it: liminal spaces!
I really enjoyed this. When I was in high school, if I had a bad day I would literally load up Standoff and walk around in it. It felt like the golden glow of the sun and the light grass healed me or something.
Graveyard of Memories sounds like it could be the name of a Halo 3 soundtrack for Gravemind/Cortana. Liminal spaces on a Halo could serve a real purpose. Like a long, narrow, empty room with a door at the end with openings in the floor by it for pop up beam turrets in a Flood containment facility and the only purpose of that room is a killbox and bottleneck for the Flood. Only one way in or out if they get that far. You wouldn't know unless you were caught in it and the defenses are activated.
I appreciate her empathy and getting many out of right wing politics. However, she is ultimately not really that left wing and is pretty much a liberal. That’s better than right wing but now that I’m fully left wing her videos don’t get me anymore. I don’t hate her or love her, but a lot of her ideas are cringey tbh.
The reason why Büchner’s Woyzeck appears to be lack temporality (thus making it appear strikingly modern for an 1837 play) is due to the fact that the sheets of paper on which it was written were found scattered on the floor in the author’s home after his death (his brother found them if I’m not mistaken). It’s not a suggestion that the scenes could be rearranged in any way, there is actually not a true order that we know of today. Anyways, great video man. I’ve been studying and rereading and playing and getting inspired by Sarah Kane for a few years now and she needs to be heard of more outside of the niche community of people that happen to stumble upon her. She truly was a genius, an exceptional playwright, a flame burning so hot that she couldn’t be but a spark. If anyone wants to get to know her better I recommend first reading all five of her plays (Blasted, Phaedra’s Love, Cleansed, Crave, 4.48 Psychosis), they aren’t that long and are usually published together in a single book, and the reading “Love Me or Kill Me” by Graham Saunders, a deep dive into her work with interviews with people that knew her and worked with her.
Fun Halo video before bed! *Existential Dread* Mmm, shit that usually starts after I fall asleep!
The entirety of halo1 was a liminal space and why it’s so creepy.
I love how you ended this, was so philosophical and I felt what you were describing..
I want to play so bad rn 😆🤩
Watching Good Damage is an awful experience for me because of how real it is. Every time in my childhood that I was facing adversity after adversity and never got a fucking break from bad thing, traumatic thing, torture #3, existentially terrifying trauma #4, I coped by jokingly saying “my college essays are gonna get me into wherever I want now”. I’m writing my college essays now. These words echo in my head. What will I do after I submit these essays and that trauma isn’t worth anything, and it just exists in all its awfulness? What was it all for? What if it’s too much, and not marketable enough to get me anywhere? Am I doomed? What this episode conveyed is *awful*. This is such a good show.
0:19 LIZARD! :D Is it a gecko?
Diane’s struggle with writing about trauma is definitely something I can relate to. I’m not a pro writer yet, but I aspire to be one and, honestly, I admit I could never write about my hardships. Ever. They might become elements of a backstory for my characters, but there is inevitably a difference added to the mix. Nothing wrong with escapism or taking only elements of your story to create a character. Personally, I’m motivated when the few people who read my stuff say that it helps them feel better or distract themselves. Plus, Diane can still explore mature topics via Ivy Tran if she wants. Maybe Ivy also has to cut off a friend or maybe he dead father was not the idealized image she had in her memory. Maybe her mom starts dating and Ivy has to deal with the awkwardness of having a stepparent and maybe a stepsibling.
Ur writing when it shows BLARN on the cup and her work clothes is impeccable, I watch it again just to realize what happened. Great video
People creating their own narratives because it is more exciting or simply because it gives them an explanation for something unexplainable is exactly why conspiracy theories exist. These are just internet conspiracies.
MTV was the early 80s at least in America.
Where's your "nostalgia in video game's" video? I don't see it on your channel.
PLEASE RELEASE THE WORLD OF WARCRAFT ROLEPLAY VIDEO I WOULD KILL TO SEE IT
I'm a comic artist, and a lot of comic artists do diary comics. So I was between projects and thought "I'll do one about my life." The year I decided to do this, I got laid off from my job and had a long-term relationship end. I was spiraling by the end of the year. I ended the comic because it just reminded me of a traumatic time in my life. It's not available anywhere online and it never will be. Everything from then on is all metaphor, because telling it as it happened was too much for me.
Benjamin is an amazing percussionist
I don't think to say that I love Sarah Kane is the right way to put it. She has preoccupied me since I read any of her work, and I have the utmost respect to her and her memory.
Absolutely right. So if the character is an 18 and a half year old ginger-headed gay guy with a stutter from Huddersfield, how can anyone but another 18 and a half year old, ginger-headed gay guy with a stutter from Huddersfield possibly play him? I mean, his intersectional trauma is so specific and unimaginable to a mere actor.
I mean if gay characters can play straight characters, as long as you do the role right, then what’s the problem? It’s acting. You’re suppose to be someone you’re not.
bojack's voice saying "your traumas aren't interesting" is spot on making a book about having shitty family and "having it bad" well guess what there's countless people with shitty families and we all have it much worse because we have to live in a world where people make books where they whine and complain about having it worse than anyone else.
she went to vietnam to "find herself" and she realized it's bullshit because nobody belongs anywhere and nobody exists on purpose and while the entire "finding yourself" crap is about taking a trip around the world and realizing that your place is where you make it diane was angry and annoyed she went all the way to the country of her ancestors and... she was just a tourist there she was a vietnamese girl in vietnam and got offended that other american tourists would assume she doesn't speak english the whole episode REALLY ends the charade show presents her as moral compass for others as morally correct and "dog days are over" shows her for what she truly is a self centered hypocrite who is very quick to point out faults in other and even go on entire rants about it but never taking any self reflection
Getting annoyed that American tourists assume you don't speak English because you look Asian _even after you explain that you're American in perfect, American-accented English_ is completely reasonable. There is an element of hypocrisy in that Diane herself displays some American tourist stereotypes in Vietnam (she went without learning the language or any of the local customs,) and she doesn't fully address them, but she was completely in the right during the "I am American" argument. Before she opened her mouth? Honest mistake. After she opened her mouth and said she was American and they still talked to her like she didn't understand English? Racist.
The Coast Guard on the 'phone appears to be Noel Coward :-) !
14:06 🤦♂️ nuclear energy =/= nuclear weapons. Like, at all. It's amazing that 70 years after the first nuclear power station, this needs to be said.
The Poisoning death in apaches is probably the most horrifying thing I've ever seen in a PIF o-o those screams are too real
“i dont want to just regurgitate everything they have to say on this” is so funny to hear in a video after that JamesSomerston guy got exposed
I guess one of the most interesting things about PIFS (Yes, us bloody Yanks called them PSA's) was the timeslots and usage they had. Most of the nightmare-inducing ones never made it to children's programming blocks, unless they were dealing with Anti-drug campaigns. When got into Broadcasting classes in high school, we had MASSIVE amounts of PSA's, and I came to learn they were used as filler for commercial breaks to fulfill some sort of government awareness program for TV viewers. So we got to pick and choose the most Trauma-inducing ones for our High school local cable access programs. "and we'll have more about this weeks football highlights after this break" Run a sponsored spot RUN A PSA ABOUT GUN VIOLENCE/KIDS PLAYING WITH GUN WHERE A TEDDY BEAR IS SHOT AND BLOOD GOES EVERYWHERE "Coach joviality talking about the win against our hated rivals." I'm going to be fair, the one that got me badly as a kid was a AD Council drunk driving classic. Scared me to death as a kid and I would run screaming from the room if it came on, only ran during watershed hours (after 8pm). Its even got Michael Jackson's "Beat it" Prominently playing in the background. ruclips.net/video/262r7Wuut2A/видео.html
Halo: CE multiplayer ambience is pretty much Alien 1
I think too because their has been a negative cultural change today & it reflects in our mediums. Everything is too corporate, too busy & divisional. We're at a time in history how we can look back thanks to memory technologies & seeing that contrast. Edit: scratch that. 😂 You said it. 😂
2:33!! Right there!! Yes you are
i was not expecting project sekai bgm in a bojack video haha
I love Kane, but I think the mistake she made was using stage directions that would never be realised.
I also think she made a grave mistake in criticising art that wasn’t her own.
Our screens were full of them in the 70's, but they sort of fizzled out during the 80's and beyond apart from about 2 or 3 a week.
Surprised no mention of ‘Talk To Frank’ drug awareness campaign. My favourite was the Get Yourself Seen one of the 1970s, about bike visibility at night.
2:49-2:52 You should've mentioned Chrissy Teigen and how (I think) she just keeps having babies so no one forgets about her.
Incredibly well-written and thought-out essay on what made early Halo design so deep.
Excellent video thanks 👍
