How to Write Enduring Bestsellers with the Two Act Chiastic Structure
Просмотров 65321 час назад
The last time I visited Barnes and Noble, I marveled at the comic book section. Western comic books only filled a couple of shelves, while around the corner, there was an entire aisle of manga comic books. I wondered, “Why is Eastern manga so much more popular than Western comic books from DC and Marvel?” As I investigated, I discovered an interesting and shockingly ancient answer. Western stor...

As a woman, I read lots of thrillers including the Tom Clancy novels and love them. I love Daniel Silva, David Baldacci, Jeffrey Deaver, and other male thriller authors that have lots of details behind what's going on. For example Jeffrey Deaver's Burning Wire with lots of information about electricity which I loved and his Colter Shaw series, which has become a TV series, with information on how he tracks somebody and I loved it. And I love Marvel and DC movies, Tolkien's LOTRs, and I don't like Bridgerton at all.

I think it's more about themes, archetypes, styles and attitude towards the art and story rather than about story structure. If you'll read manga a lot - you'll know the difference eventually. And not only manga, also books etc.

Whenever I hear about Eastern Storytelling structure it is always Ki-sho-ten-ketsu. I was surprised when I realized you were talking about a 2-act structure. I have never heard of this before, but this fits exactly into how I conceive my stories. This video made me realise I have been planning stories in the chiastic structure without it even realising lol. And the real struggle begins when I try to fit my stories into established story structures. Sigh. Thank you for this video, this gave me a new perspective on how I should approach my stories.

Ahh man this makes so much sense... I am a bit shifed at myself that I never have heard of this. I am a discovery writer and struggle with middles all the time. It just doesnt make sense because I did have a cataclysm but didnt know how to make it back to the end. I just have to flip it with the effect of the cataclism. This is so clear, thanks

Can you clarify, is the Kennedy quote an "ABBA" structure, or "ABCBA"? If I'm understanding correctly it seems like the elements are: A='country' and B='you'. That seems like ABBA (since "you" appears twice in the quote), but then I'm not sure if that fits with the part about it being the pivot point.

You really explained the appeal of goodnight moon. I couldn't figure it out! It sees from the perspective of a child who doesn't want to go to sleep, and the darkening pages create visual drama that's very relatable to the whole theme of bedtime. Plus they used an easy to underestand structure. Thanks!

I have found a similar structure helpful when drafting an outline without knowing about Chiastic structure. Get the protagonist deepest into the middle-the turning point-then figure out the second half by reversing the themes, situations etc. while still “discovery writing” the outline.

Manga hasn't been destroyed by the left for starters and the stories are a thousand times more interesting than anything Superman ever did. JoJo's Bizarre Adventure has an entire arch where the President is trying to collect the pieces of Christ's corpse to become a God using a cross country horse race in the 1800's as a cover up. Here it's "Robin is gay now for no reason hashtag free Palestine LGBTQ rights lmfao"

This really reminds me of John Yorke’s “Into the Woods” structure. His book emphasised the mirroring of the story around a turning point at the middle. For that matter, so does James Scott Bell in his “Super Structure.”

Writers writing for others like themselves -- You hit the nail on the head! Most people are NOT writers and therefore a book written more for other writers will seldom sell to readers -- probably why those in publishing industry have trouble predicting what will sell. Most in the publishing industry wish they were "writers." However they define "writer." And professional beta readers reach a point where they'll read an enjoyable book but it won't be "enough" to be recommended. Now I'm trying to find my normal weird tribe...

Amazing the amount of times I've found the "common knowledge" on any given subject is based on someone's 2nd hand opinion. Sometimes even someone who's blatantly biased, full of BS or with an axe to grind.

My favourite question is always, "how do you spend most of your time?" And, if I already know what they do, for example if I know they are a write or an editor, etc, I'd ask, "How do you spend most of your time, when you are not working?" Always gets me an interesting answer where I can ask more and learn more about them. But, as mentioned, the key is to actually care and want to get to know the person you are having a conversation with.

While I appreciate your discussion and insights, it would have been nice if you stepped out of the dichotomy of "male stories/readers" vs. "female stories/readers". There is a whole universe of stories that span the interests and values of both male and female readers, and they may offer "affordances" for different readers to value and appreciate different things. As evidence, I offer the Christian New Testament. I think the evidence is strong that both men and women, over many for many centuries, have found the stories and storytelling in the New Testament to be interesting and compelling. Same could probably be said for stories in other religious or spiritual traditions, and even folk tales. I also think some of your points were too simplistic. You talk a lot about how men appreciate and talk about sports (formations, equipment, plays) but you leave out how they experience the game while watching in a group. Fans watching a game at a sports bar will spontaneously "high five" with strangers when the home team scores, which is a very emotional, very relational dynamic. Also, notice how sports broadcasters interview players after the game. They usually ask "feeling" questions rather than technical+tactical questions. "How did it feel when ...?" and "How does this victory rank in your career?" Last, even in the "pure masculine" stories, emotions and relations are vital, even if they are derived from the action or the "facts of the case". The "hero" will fall apart pretty quickly if his emotional support system collapses along with his sense of self.

Thank you! This was awesome. I'm a woman but also resonate with so much of what you two said and how you would like fiction to be. I sorely miss the days of Heinlein, Asimov, or even Lee Child info-dumping. That kind of long "explanation break" was a large part of the charm of those books--plus techniques, settings and details of setting (whether from a strategic, practical, or aesthetic point of view), and so on. I roll my eyes at all the relational drama --though I definitely don't mind authors focusing on friendship. But I like the relational stuff understated--less is more. A hand on a shoulder when one's friend is flagging in confidence conveys so much more than chapters and chapters of interpersonal drama.

It is the in-store book store staff culture and customer service attitude, "No men." It cannot only be the store locations, the management must foster or at least accept the acts and attitude of the employees. In the 1980s and 1990s I used to buy around $500 of books and magazines each month between Barns & Noble and Borders stores on Dale Mabry in North Tampa. That was a lot of money in those days, The stores were run by women and became more and more anti-men. It just started out with a little ignoring the man to taking the women again and again in line behind the men for checkout. I mentioned it to a few women friends who thought I was full of it.....Until they were in the stores after talking with me (to prove I was wrong). Afterwards they told me they noticed the same thing and then remembered other times in the then past that came to mind after accepting the fact that it was happening. My wife started to notice they treated her different when she was with me. It was like she brought me into the woman's restroom. I like to read and kept going anyway, at lest for a while then started going to used book stores where I did not notice a prejudice. My daughter then gave me a Kindle which I did not like as much as a real book, but at least I did not have to be in a store that went out of their way to make sure I knew they did not want me in the store. Retired I read 10-15 books a week, all Kindle. I just don't like the obvious retail store hate. There was one large corporate bookstore that was the exception, It was in the Grossmont Center, San Diego, CA. but I no longer travel there and I think it is gone now anyway. A T Burke P.S. First Borders, and recently Barns & Noble are gone from Dale Mabry. I just saw that Barns & Noble will open a store within a mile or so of the old location. So what.

No business can afford to be prejudice about their income source. The greenback dollar is an ultimate equality creator. Used book stores are usually staffed by owners who get this. Corporate employees too frequently haven't a clue it's customers, not "the corporation" , that pays their wages.

As a gay novice author writing his first book, this speaks quite a bit of truth to me personally. I love “things” and “nerding” about them, but time and time again, I'm told not to go into crazy details when writing. After writing my first draft, I picked up Slow Horses, and after reading the first two chapters, I wanted so badly to add back those details I edited out! I do feel I have written down the middle, but I am also afraid that: 1. The amount of swearing and violence will turn away female readers (my mother didn't mind it, though) 2. A drag queen character who is so rich in detail and brings so much to my protagonist’s journey will turn away straight male readers 3. The blend of growth, change, emotion, detail, lore and touching on relationships and family will turn away both. A gritty crime thriller with a promiscuous NYC enforcer with PTSD and batting criminal politics and drug warfare seems to be a damn hard book to write!
