Cosina CX-2: The Godfather of Lomography
Просмотров 2,4 тыс.Год назад
The Cosina CX-2 was an ingenious compact camera which emerged from Japan in 1980. If you're thinking it looks familiar - you're right. This camera, which was launched at Photokina, caught the eye of Soviet designers and inspired the infamous LOMO LC-A. The CX-2 isn't as well known as the Russian camera which followed it, but as you'll discover in this video it's a fantastic little camera with s...
Pentax ES II review

Released in 1973, it featured an ingenious aperture-priority auto exposure system with SMC Takumar lenses and an electronically controlled shutter. In this video, Kosmo Foto marks the camera’s 50th birthday with a deep dive into why it’s such a great example of camera design from the golden age of film SLRs. Shot and edit...

Pentax PC35AF-M: A cult classic in the making

The Pentax PC35AF-M is one of hundreds of early autofocus 35mm compacts that hit the market in the 1980s. But a few things - not least its chunky frame - set it apart from its competitors. Kosmo Foto takes a look at a cheap-and-chunky 80s compact that's surprisingly capable. How to make 16mm film from a roll of 35mm
I have this camera in excellent condition. In London . Is there a chance I can sell it ?
Does anyone know if perforation is requires for a Minolta-16 P? Any info would be really appreciated. Thanks!
Not all lens for the ES are marked SMC, some Super Takumar will work with a ES II if they have the aperture lever. If you get a regular Takumar the Auto portion does not work not sure if the meter does correctly either.
Hmmmmm... Isn't Nikon FM-10 based on that camera? And Olympus OM2000 / OM2000 spot? As well as Canon T60? Just asking for a friend...
The biggest problem I am having with my beautiful little SP. Is focusing in the stopped down View Finder.
Does anyone have a good address, in the EU, for purchase and delivery to Germany? 🙏
Which one do you personally prefer - minolta af-c or pentax pc35af-m? currently deciding which one to get. on the paper minolta lens is better, but how do they compare in real life?
The Chinon CE--II Memotron is basically just a better in every way version of this camera. It still does M42 with aperture priority electornic shutter and open aperture metering like this. But it adds exposure lock, more options of compensation, an explicit control for multi exposures, viewfinder blind, LED readout is easier to see in the viewfinder, some of them I believe have split prisms, and it can open aperture meter ANY M42 lens not just takumars (it does last second stop down metering at half press. So yes that could be SLIGHTLY more annoying than an ES II, but there's definitely no clunky stopping mode that you have to go back out of, etc. etc., just half press, un press goes back to wide open). AND you can manually choose the full range of shutter speeds not just 60+. Oh and 1/2000th second. Did I mention mirror lock on timer? Still nothing extraneous (except maybe the viewfinder blind) but just better versions of all the same stuff It also has stepless shutters, but those don't really matter much, they are over hyped. You're never more than 1/2 stop away worst case with non-stepless anyway and on average you'd only be 1/4 stop off, 1/4 stop just doesn't matter and is well within the margin of error of the meter anyway for whole scene metering and not spot metering etc.
Where would one look to find one of these cameras? I'm looking for a camera to replace my Minox. However, the more I learn about Minox, the less I trust that I can find a working on. I've checked the usual websites and found the Balda in Taiwan. But that's the only listing in the world? Where is the best place to check?
Thank you so much for sharing this nice video about Zenit Camera , I have Zenit ttl an amazing film camera to have and use 📷💞
I really liked my Vito CS, which I bought new, many years ago. The drawbridge broke on mine. It's been 'repaired' but unfortunately, it's definitely not the same as before. I did look for a replacement, but I think they were expensive in the UK when I looked. I have many cameras, but now use a Minox ML as my primary compact 35mm film camera. Thanks for the video.
I want the Minolta but really difficult to track down a decent working one now! And prices have gone up!!
Smena also means a working time. And at school children who stayed after the classes were studing in the second "smena" basicaly waiting for the pick up from their parents :) Lubitel can have a meaning of amateur. But it has never been used that way in Soviet countries. The word "lubitel" had a meaning of an enthusiast. You buy simple camere and when you are hooked and go deep in your hobby you are an enthusiast. Nice video btw!
I still love the Olympus AF-10 and for me its the best Point and Shoot for a reasonably price with the Minolta AF-E (at least in Germany)
I'm working on a rangefinder camera, and I have pretty much everything figured out except the shutter. Is there anyway we can chat via email about the design, and maybe work together so I can build a similar one locally? Cheers, love the brilliant tinkering.
Hi there - it's not me building it, it's Oleg from OK Vintage Camera - here's his site: www.okvintagecamera.com/
The 'Smena' also means the period of stay of the child in the pioneer camp, which was usually 28 days
Wow. In 25 years of collecting Soviet cameras, I'd not come across that bit of info - thanks for that!
It was the first and most comfortable camera I've ever used.🥰
My camera good gear
I have this cam also and i want to sale anyone interested ❤
How can you transfer the pictures to your iPhone ?
Develop the film, digitally scan the film, upload scans to your phone
Do you think it could be modified to use other lens?
not really leica copy. canon and leotax nicca even nikon made copies. ussr ones are, not even look alike, just weak m39 mount cameras
Excellent review. Is the focus long or short?
Back in the 1960s when standard 8mm was the only basic amateur movie film Ilfochrome was a good deal. However it was nothing like Agfachrome, or even Ferrania, let alone Kodak. I actually think Ilford might have made the stuff themselves, but if they did buy it in it was not from the usual sources. Ilfocolour might have sourced elsewhere, never used it a lot. Plenty of ilfochrome movies though. Still working through my first roll of Phoenix and looking forward to see how it comes out.
one can hear your love for these cameras, great video
The world is too colorful to shoot only b&w. I’m glad Harman came out with a new color film. Also Adox is coming with a 6 asa color film. Although I’m yet the grasp their iso to temperature statement. In anyway, I haven’t tried Orwo yet. I’m gonna try me some in the run of next month I think. Thanks for sharing. 👍🏻
Thank you for the video, will pick up my own Vito C tomorrow. The local dealer has it for 25€ on sale with new batteries. Hope it works since all my Minox 35 models (35GT, 35ML and 35EL) are not working properly.
That's a great price - hope it works well for you!
Before this and Nikon F, there was Praktina FX from East Germany launched in 1953, considered as the first true professional built SLR, complete with an array of lenses and accessories. I think the Start borrows the basic design from Praktina, but it has a more modern lever film winder instead of a knob and some Exakta features such as the front plate shutter release and film cutter
I took out my Pentax PC35AFM out recently. I wasn't in love with it before (that battery door is really sketch) but I'd heard good things about it so tried it again. That distance meter is pretty helpful and looks cool in the viewfinder. I don't mind the weight which isn't helped when it has two AA batteries on board but 32 frames into a roll of Portra 400 and I'm actually enjoying it. That clack of the flash when it pops up shows you mean business
A big problem with this film is that it is not really compatible with RA-4 papers. It can be printed, but is a pain in the ass to do so. I do not accept the argument "but everybody scans their film nowadays". No, we don´t..That said, this is an experimental film and should be treated as such.
Stephen, I couldn't agree more with your comments. Harman are to be congratulated for stepping up. I think some of the critics of Phoenix 200 miss the point about what it is and are not well informed about the challenges involved in starting colour film manufacturing from scratch. Thank you for publishing this commentary. Users of film seem to often get quite emotionally invested in it. I get this-I really do-but the voice of reason is not always present in online dialogue and it is sometimes much needed. Bottom line-I cannot see how this initiative by Harman can be anything other than good news for film photographers. They should be commended for putting (a lot) of dollars into the future of film photography. Cheers, Brett
Dear Stephen, Canny video as always👍 This is truly great news for all us colour negative film shooters out there👍🤘👏😎😁 Regards,
I’m so happy Harman brought their chops to the table. They make fantastic BW films. But now that they’re making color film, it’s a real boost that we film shooters have been wanting. Great video, Stephen!
I think its great that Harman is making color film again, especially since Kodak is the only "major" player making like 99% of the color film out there & Fuji is't making film anymore
As Stephen said, we really don't know for sure what Fuji are doing. There is a lot of speculation on the web but that is all it is.
Nobody knows what Fuji is up to. There is no official information of Fuji planning to withdraw completely from manufacturing film. These are rumors that should be understood as such. Everybody remembers how people "knew" 20 years ago that film was dead, and only digital will remain.
Thank you for the video. Im considering buying one but i also want to know if i can use the lens with an adapter on modern full frame cameras for videos.
A very good question - given that the Start was the only camera to use this lens, it might be hard to find an adapter.
One thing i recognised, trying to set the camera to ASA 800 - there is no such setting. ASA 640 and 1000 are the highest settings.
You're absolutely right. I've found that shooting at 1000 and rating the film at 800 isn't an issue, however. It's half a stop.
Awesome video. Thank you so much !
Glad you liked it!
So what shutter speeds are we looking at, and more specific : here?
I bought the ES II on the strength of your original article years ago. In fact I think I may have chatted to you years ago in Hove. I now own 4 ES II the most recent purchase a silver copy. I like you was worried that my camera would break so that I would have spares.
Any thoughts on the KMZ Start vs Exaktas? I just discovered these types of 35mm SLRs and have been considering getting one. I'm by no means a professional photographer and looking for something relatively easy to use. Curious what you're thoughts are!
I kinda disagree... I think if it came out today like 1/1/2024 ... It would resurge so hard... It would bait camera manufacturers to all jump back in. Maybe Ricoh would even revive the Cosina brand - a new "Voigtlander Bessa S" perhaps.
Just picked up a couple of rolls. I'll push the second one a couple of stops. Look forward to seeing the results.
I've got One of this camera and Is Amazing, expecially with dia film lime Avrà CT Precisa, on cross-process, (c41)..It Is best of Lomo lc-a but not so gode lime o Minox gt or Olympus XA..btw an eccellente camera ! 👏🏻
Can you create double exposures with this camera?
Be aware that the later version named Mini-Sport AF-K has a three element lens, a downgrade from the brilliant five element glass on the original PC35AF and AF-M.
Thanks for the video. I love your images!
I posted twice on apug that I wasn't going to try it because I quit shooting color 3 years ago. Well, somehow I came home from a local camera store with 2 rolls in my pocket. Unlike the scans in this video, most on youtube are absolute crap, having been done with seemingly no thought at all. Hopefully I can have some fun and come up with something worth looking at. A couple R&D engineers who worked on it said in another video that it actually tests out at iso 123.5 so 125 should do it.
