This whole show was a gem. It's a rare experience where the creative talent can all be on the same page. And from what I understand, Gene Rodddenberry was deeply involved in, at least, the first season. Just gonna say as a fanboy of the original series that TNG hit all the right spots. And while a genre like this might imply that it was only directed at a specific audience, it's clear that it was popular in a great many ways in many countries. Bravo.

This isn’t related to the topic of this video at all, but I was really struck by how bad the sound design is in some of the episodes. There’s one scene where two guys are talking in the middle of a busy fishing village, and there conversation is the ONLY audio. We see people moving around in the background, but aside from their talking, there is zero noise. It’s jarring and bad, we should be getting noise from the many things happening in the background. There’s another scene where some highway robbers are chopping down trees to build a fire, and the sound effect of the ax hitting the trunk is so quiet, it feels almost comical. The sound design is so ridiculously low key that it’s distracting. I contrast the tree scene in RoP with the “Back on the Menu” scene in Two Towers, where the sound effects of the Orcs chopping up trunks sounds really crisp, and works perfectly with the pacing and flow of the scene.

Perhaps just as important as how to shoot, set, and script a long shot is deciding how to lead up to it, because that can change the inner reaction the viewer has when the long shot finally does take place. I like when an extremely emotionally charged and/or loud and chaotic scene cuts rather suddenly to something very still and quiet, like the battlefield after the battle is long over, or the silent moments spent crying in the bathroom after a fight with a loved one.

14:16 The reason why NuTrek “Picard” didn’t feel like Picard is because he was written by talentless hacks who couldn’t care less about respecting the character or the established source material. It really isn’t as deep as you think it is.

I think you nailed it when you said they're sacrificing long-term loyalty and for short-term profits. Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, Fox... Disney is obsessed with killing golden geese. They buy up a profitable company with a strong fan base, churn out a bunch of mediocre crap as fast as possible, and once the market is oversaturated and people have lost interest, they use their earnings to buy up another company and bleed it dry in turn. They're canibalizing the entire entertainment industry, and it's not sustainable. I was excited for E7 and saw it in theaters. I was cautiously optimistic about E8 and streamed it. Didn't even bother with E9. And all the spinoffs are hit and miss. I tried for a while, but I just don't care anymore. Star Wars is just completely ruined at this point. R.I.P.

A wonderful character and actor. And absolutely insane that Roddenberry was emphatically against giving Sir Stewart the role simply because he was bald (even though the rest of the casting staff believed that Stewart was perfect). The brilliance and stubborn eccentricity that is Roddenberry 😂

Insightful video. I'm in agreement on just above every point. I first watched TNG as a teenager (hearing about the awesomeness of The Best of Both Worlds Part 1 prompted me to watch all the re-runs in the summer before Part 2 premiered), so my experience is similar to this creator's. The movies in general and their depiction of Picard was definitely a disappointment. I think Picard was at least recognizable as the same character, but with many moments of having wildly out-of-character traits. I think that peaked with Insurrection. They reigned things in a little with Nemesis. But they were all bad. Of course, with the Picard series, the character of Picard pretty much vanished into who I presume is Patrick Steward playing himself. Knowing when to end a good story has never been Hollywood's strong suit!

You sure about Picard representing humanity? I mean humanity has done (and is still doing) some really disgusting things. Sometimes humanity is really confused and self contradictory. Other times we are laser focused. Humanity has achieved the most unbelievable things and then fails miserably at TikTok challenges. We are savages among scholars and heroes. Or is he supposed to represent the future humanity? The humanity that rose from the aftermath of another world war? A humanity that has overcome savagery? Sure you could say he represents a few aspects of humanity - the explorer, the scientist, the philosopher, the bald guy. He's a great captain, but I wouldn't want that guy to represent ALL of humanity. I think that would be silly. Stop it!

They gave us the great movies that we continue to enjoy even today. I have read that not all actors can do a take with the camera so close to them!

The writing, directing and overall pacing of this film are so tight and efficient, like so many of the films of that era, that this long moment creates a kind of emotional black hole that sucks us in: We don't know it, but there is something going on here. It's effectively setting up the main conflict in JUST THAT ONE SHOT. Incredibly efficient and masterful. Yes, the confidence Curtiz had is astounding, but Owen Marks, the editor, is likely more to credit for holding this shot in the edit for so long. Perhaps they collaborated, I'm sure there's a historian who knows, but Marks edited some heavy-hitters in his day, so it's no fluke that he cut this one so wonderfully. And also, speaking as an actor, there's a little trick that can do wonders which is not blinking for as long as you can (which you've keenly pointed out). It can add so much discomfort and tension inside the actor that translates directly into the performance. I'm not trying to take away from Bergman in the slightest--in fact, I'm praising her technique--Bogey does it in several performances too. I think this was not uncommon in those days because "the close-up" was a standard shot in the recipe book of making a film. Great video! I'll be on the look for more :)

So happy to see content made about the moral and ethical structure of Picard as depicted in Tng and also his influence as a now archetypal character of modern narrative. Picard was the father I and many of us wish we had in our life, in many we did have him in this role, so i'm always grateful to see others speak about their attunement to that influence.

This is so so wonderful. But i have to make one tiny correction, only because i get to bring up one of my favorite episodes that i go back to consistently. Thats not the only episode that ends with that shot looking back into the enterprise at picard! The last shot of Darmok has him holding the other captain’s knife looking out the window. Its really moving, and it also happens to be an episode where he is confronted with a new unanswerable way of understanding ourselves as humans - do we find meaning based on something inherent and personal about ourselves and do we understand others based on their exact individuality and the language they use to communicate with us? or does the meaning and understanding come from the containers we collectively created over history, our shared stories and myths. A chicken and the egg question. Also, Inner Light is, in my opinion, one of the greatest episodes of television. I love it so deeply. And i love how it changed him for me - from that moment on its never slipped my mind, watching the show, that he had unmeasurable grief And love that he carried with him from that moment on. And sometimes it boiled to the surface, like when he fell in love again.
