I never played the DS version, and I grew up with the N64 version. But from what I've seen of it, it just has more content, more characters, etc. So I'd say that alone just makes it better, regardless of the simpler controller and whatnot.

As somebody who played the ds version religiously as a kid and fully completed it more times than I could count, I prefer the original. I will always appreciate the ds version for being the first 3d Mario game I played, but the original is just so much easier to control and the new characters are cool, but having to go all the way to the slide room every time to switch characters really slows down the gameplay at times. However, there is certainly more to do in the ds version and it’s still a ton of fun.

If you want more subscribers, take a course in videography. Your camera is all over the place, the viewer can't make out anything you are looking out.

I was born in 96, the year Mario 64 came out. I barely played that version but on my like, 8th birthday in 2004 I got Mario 64ds and yoshis touch and go. We went to an amusement park and I played Mario 64 for hours in the car and hotel room. I love the DS version more than

7:19 not exactly this, but there is a hack for 64 DS that makes the controls use the touch screen ones but with an analog stick instead, basically giving it full analog control. Its available if you use a Wii U or a 3DS, and makes it feel so much nicer

The 3DS doesn't actually fix anything about the controls, the circle pad just makes it more comfortable.

The fact Nintendo hasn't capitalized on a remaster of this version is actually insane. Nintendo just keeps sleeping on extra money. They are apparently working with third party companies though to ramp up remasters though it's just a rumor if I remember correctly. These rumors are from shaky third rate news sources though and go against Nintendo's tight grip it's had on their IP. Third party developers worked a lot with Nintendo pre-2000 but since Iwata their protectiveness has been extreme. It needs to stop.

The remake is definately better than the original; except for the controls. Problem solved if you play it on a 3DS though.

The original DS came with the thumb stylus. If you play Super Mario 64 DS using touch mode, you can use the thumb stylus to move Mario with your left thumb with full analog control, no run button required. X and Y move the camera. It's not as good as the N64 analog stick, but it's far better than the dpad or the regular stylus. Even better, with a modded 3DS you can install a patch that enables the use of the circle pad with full analog control, instead of emulating the dpad as it normally does. With a New 3DS ZL/ZR or the c stick can control the camera. Aside from this, there are advantages to both. The camera is far superior in DS, fixing what is probably the biggest issue of the original. Though in standard and dual hand modes camera control is mapped to the touch screen, so it's awkward to use, this isn't a problem in touch mode or with the 3DS analog patch. DS uses the far better wall jump from Sunshine. However, the side jump requires you to run too far to do, making it all but useless. In standard mode (the analog patch works in all modes) you can build up speed by holding B and then wall jump quickly, but that's far more awkward to do than just doing it normally on the N64. So from a control perspective there are advantages to both. The N64 version is definitely still better than DS without the patch. If you want to play DS the best way is, in order: 1. New 3DS with the analog patch in standard mode 2. Regular 3DS with the analog patch in touch mode 3. Any system with the thumb stylus in touch mode Any other control method is a considerable downgrade from that.

I definitely need to get this game, and mod my 3DS. There’s this plugin that lets you swap out the circle pad and touch screen inputs to give you full 360 degree movement. Your speed is also tied to how far you move the circle stick, like the analog stick for the original. It’s too bad there’s no ROM hacks for the DS game. It would be cool to have custom levels in this. I also agree that it would be awesome to have a ROM back that puts this game into the original.

Honestly, I think it could only be considered better if you’re playing it on a 3DS through backwards compatibility, as the control pad allows you to get the full level of control that the game was originally designed around, rather than just a D-Pad

Nintendo remakes of their own games are typically just supplemental content. Things like Mario RPG or TTYD remakes of course no, as they serve to just remove content and replace the original. But stuff like Mario 64DS and 3D World + Bowser's Fury is basically a DLC release that includes the full game. I think in this particular case, 64DS should only really be played after playing the real thing. And not back to back either, it's meant to be 64 through a different lens after nostalgia kicks in.
