Blue Pierrot Butterfly Tarucus species
Resilient Beauties: Blue Pierrots of the Urban Wild
This tiny butterfly in the picture belongs to the Tarucus family, commonly known as Blue Pierrots. While the exact species is hard to confirm without seeing its upperside, Tarucus balkanica niagra and Tarucus nara have both been recorded in this very spot before.
Blue Pierrots are closely tied to Ziziphus plants (Jujube), where they lay their eggs. These wild shrubs bloom and fruit during December, attracting not just butterflies but other pollinators too. Sadly, human activities like road and pipeline construction are rapidly shrinking their feeding grounds. Invasive weeds-Alternanthera, Siam Weed, and Billygoat Weed-have spread across di...

Secret Life of Butterflies: Ant-Caterpillar Associations
Просмотров 755 месяцев назад
Caterpillars of lycaenid butterflies have evolved to secrete chemicals that feed and appease ants, a phenomenon known as "Myrmecophily", or simply 'Love for ants'). Here is a caterpillar of Lime Blue butterfly (Chilades lajus), being tended by Sugar ants of the Camponotus species. These caterpillars produce a sweet secretion from a nectar gland, attracting ants who feed on it. In return, the an...

@@butterfliesofmulund thank you very much ❤️❤️❤️
Well i dont think so you know me, I am watching you from a long time, yesterday I saw an hawkmoth drinking nectar from flowers when I saw it closely it was an coffee bee hawkmoth.
@@ToxicBlox20K Thank you. Yes, the hawkmoths are difficult to photograph while in flight or on flowers (Hummingbird hawk moth esp) unless you have the right photography setup. The one you see here was reared from caterpillars found in the wild on the Kadamba tree (Mitragyna parvifolia). If you are lucky you might find them in the months of monsoon to winter in India 👍
Host plant?

@@butterfliesofmulund so nice
thank u for sharing this information so lovely
Thanks you, glad you liked it! Do check the video on how they choose their host plants as well, you can watch it here ruclips.net/video/5SYCfYTK6Dw/видео.html
Whats the black thing at the back called?
Thanks for your question! These tufts or hair-brush like structures are common in Crambidae moths such as Parotis and Cucumber moth (Diaphania indica). These are modified scales present at tail-end and often puffed by unfertilized females, to spread pheromones and attract mates. In most cases, males have these as vestigial structures but females have them fully developed. Butterflies such as milkweed butterflies also have similar structures called "Hair-pencils" that function in the same manner.
Awesome 👏
Thank you! Cheers!
@@butterfliesofmulund most welcome 🙌🌿

Thank you for your kind words!
Awesome. Is this species common in Mumbai? On which host plant did you rear it at home?
The adults are rarely photographed in cities but you get to see lot of caterpillars since their host plants Terminalia and Lagerstromia are plentiful. A lot of them die in early stages or fail to come out of pupae due to infections. Their usual 6 week life cycle can strech longer due to seasonal changes. We only raised 3 caterpillars last year for documentation, and luckily got this female and another male previously. She even laid eggs a week later.
You'll find all the details in this blog post.. butterfliesofmulund.blogspot.com/2023/01/life-cycle-of-tussar-silk-moth.html?m=1

It's host plant i.e., Nerium is almost everywhere in Delhi but I've never seen this butterfly anywhere here. What can the possible reasons behind it?
This butterfly is commonly seen in Delhi, They prominently appear during the migration season Spetember-October till December, weather and atmospheric conditions in Delhi may play a role but surely its present in Delhi. It is advised to get both nectar and host plants together, one without the other is of little use.
This is female, right?
Yes, only females mimic, males look like Great eggfly but that doesn't give them any advantage, as great eggflies are non-toxic.
Wonderful
Super,,
Wow! I'm almost sure that this mantis is the one I've seen on my plant.
There could be similar looking species or genera, that's why it would be best to raise one to adulthood. Best wishes!
