"What do you see?", When Lord Vulcan won Serena and the house in the beginning of the film, he had the slightest inkling of actually marrying her. But ever since he first laid eyes on her, he knew he wanted to marry her and making her his wife was part of his strategic plan, he was playing the long game, to actually earn her love and not force anything upon her (a true gentlemen). He immediately put away his side chick La Flamme, passed her along to his best friend and was fixated on Serena's well-being. In the beginning Serena couldn't understand why she was living at Mandrake, this was so he could keep her close, properly care for her from afar, keep her safe, check-in on her anytime he wanted (easy access) and give her the best that he had. Sometimes love lurks in the details.
"Is there any secret that can't be kept from you in this house?" At this point Serena is beginning to carry on like the Lady of the house, who knows everything about everything, even that strawberry's have blossomed in the garden. One reason why Justin probably wasn't so quick to take to marriage is because of his families secrets, he presented himself as cold and distant so he couldn't get close to people, always having to hide the families indiscretions. But Serena figured him out and learned of his inner most secrets. It's a beautiful thing when you can find someone who you can honestly be yourself around and not be ashamed and Justin's found this in Serena. He already loved her before, but knowing that he can trust her and that she has a loving relationship with his father just took things to another level for him, he's even more convinced that Serena is the one for him and flashes this approving look on his face as she runs away again.
"My apologies for keeping you waiting". This statement is singular, not plural. Justin rode his horse and stopped right in front of Serena, he didn't apologize to the group and say something to the effect of "my apologies for keeping you all waiting", because he only cared about her feelings. Serena gives Justin this mesmerizing look and this is when she's starting to let her feelings for him show. The look of love and admiration is written all over her face and both of them are fixated on each other. Lady Elizabeth also notices this, she see's Justin looking at Serena and the look of love on Serena's face, this is why she get's mad and rushes off. But Justin continues to hold Serena's gaze because he can feel it too. It's the subtleness of actions and responses within this film that you have to pick up on. Justin doesn't move at all but remains fixated on Serena and when she starts to move her horse to take off, the way he turns and rushes after her is symbolic for I'm going after this woman.
"Shall I make you fall in love with me, Serena?" The girl runs away because she's startled and caught off guard at the moment when her own feelings for him are starting to grow, but she's conflicted because she doesn't fully trust him based on his perceived reputation. Serena is strong-willed and opinionated, she's not afraid to express herself and Justin knows this. If she completely detested the idea of considering him as a possibility she would have mentioned it, the same way she told her cousin Nick in the beginning that he couldn't make her happy when he offered to marry her. Deep down Serena knows that she could be happy with Justin, he's handsome, kind-hearted and she absolutely loves Mandrake. Serena is also honest and sincere, so she couldn't look him in the eyes and lie to him, so the best she could do is run away as to avoid the subject entirely. After Serena closes the door, Justin gives a slight smile because he has found Serena's weakness and knows that she has some feelings for him...at this moment he's thinking, I've got a shot.
He hadn’t heard her say his name since the day he proposed. When she went from “sir” to “Edward” the change of expression on his face was so subtle and so wonderful. I love this version.
Both of these actors were the best partners as Mr.Rochester and Jane but I never understood why he would want such a nut in his house sympathy or not that total grounds for divorce.
Love this movie. But there is a couple of times in the fight where HBC was like whatever. When she falls she throughs her eyes up and when Edward Fox puts the knife to her neck she try’s not to laugh. 😉
I love this "strawberries" scene, where he finds out that she knows the family secret, and has kept it to herself thus far. You can see in every word, every touch that Justin is trying to seduce her heart. Remember when he said to her in a previous scene, "Shall I make you fall in love with me?" Well, it is beginning to play out with every gesture; his suttle way of making Serena fall in love with him. And everytime she runs away like a frightened little rabbit, he is triumphant within himself because it is a clear indication that he is appealing to her sensibilities. The way he speaks to her and stares her down is mesmerizing. ❤️
Saw this movie when I was 16, and sooooo wanted Lord Vulcan to make me fall in love with him! So happy I got to see it again. Marcus was as always all sorts of pretty...😍
Best rendition of Jane Eyre ever! Jane and Mr Rochester's characters were developed so much better than in other films. The ending was so sweet and touching. Liked the closing credits music too.
Did Helena Bonham Carter look permanently pissed-off in ALL her films? Always seemed angry about something and rarely, smiled. Did she ever do a comedy? Why were men supposed to be attracted this sour-faced young woman? She seems to have no sense of fun in her. There must have been any number of actresses better suited to the role - although, Wikipedia says Barbara Cartland was actively involved in the casting.
Read the book first and fell in love with the reading. It perfectly portrays the characters

This has been an absolute hoot. Fox's Snidely Whiplash Routon is wonderful. And Diana Rigg's "Twenty"was worth the whole film.
