One Shots need to be treated completely differently from a single night of campaign play and today we're going to talk about some of the lessons I learned for this specific one shot where I got overly ambitious.

Tournament modules are actually a very old concept from back in the early days of D&D and the like. I was pleasantly surprised to see Free League bring the idea back. Given the age of Drakar och Demoner, I'll bet we'll be seeing more of this sort of thing in the weeks and months to come. Great video. 😁

Knave 2e is simply incredible. I have to agree, it is a masterpiece.
I remember the first time I went through it I thought to myself “I made a mistake not getting this MUCH sooner”. Really blew me away!
I finally unlocked my “solo” method. Turns out I don’t enjoy acting as a player but more enjoy the act of worldbuilding using a procedure from Perilous Wilds. Building out a location, populating a hex, generating a nasty monster.
If you haven't tried a Player Emulator, there's a few great ones out there that let you run autonomous characters through your created world and act solely as the GM.
And the amazing thing is that it is all a form of play. Reminds me of when I was but a wee lad and I would find weird ways to play the zoo tycoon games lol Player Emulator?! This peeked my interest.
@@Sacred_Art_of_Gaming Mythic Magazine Issue 41 has a "mythicified" version of a player emulator. And there is a supplement called The Solitary GM that I have found to be quite fun.
@@AceneDean that does sound intriguing. Sort of like in madden games you can play the whole game or press “simulate season” to see what high level manager choices do to your outcome
Thank you so much for bringing that up! I’ll have to check it out.
I love Mythic so much. The second edition GME is amazing. Between that and the 1-Page Mythic tools, there is always something from Mythic within arms reach at my gaming table.
I do see a lot of potential in the 2e and I the 1 page mythic tools are really up my alley. Thank you for the input and this comment will expedite looking into it 🫡
Awesome Dragonbane run! I like what you did with the Wisp at the end. I look forward to your next Solo play :) P.S. nice evil laugh
@@MandatoryFunTime I am ecstatic that you enjoyed it. Also…you are a legend for sticking it out til the very VERY end 🫡
You will enjoy this! I ran this last year at the National Dragonbane Championship at UK Games Expo and it was fantastic!
O wow so this has been around for a while then and they’re releasing it for free now? Really neat!
10:40 I lost the battle long ago, 50 years later getting games, RPGs, models, minis, I still wanna get the new stuff!
Wait…are you just me from the future and this is how you’re warning me?! I get it, space time continuum and all that so you can’t say butttttttt I think I’m picking up what you’re putting down
"That's rough" - Frostbite's whole journey lol.
Ain’t that the truth lol builds good character
You could always do a mix of one shots and campaigns in order to speed your play schedule up. Miru, for example, can easily be run through in one go. Mork Borg is a good system for one shots as well. Personally, I like Dragonbane for one shots. But you are already campaigning that. I'd be interested in seeing the ICRPG and SW Rifts sessions though. I love the ICRPG and Palladium Rifts systems. I'm curious what the SW conversion looks like.
@@toddmen8302 very true and I appreciate those game recommendations! ICRPG & Rifts are some of my absolute favorites. I’m not even opposed to converting mid campaign to deliver a different feel with a different system. It will just depend on how easy the system is to learn or my familiarity with it if it’s something I haven’t played yet like Runeqest. Thanks for stopping by 🫡
nice beginning lol. I half expected you to say, " I AM Iron Man." lol. I'm excited to see the Miru playthrough along with the Broken Empires. I still haven't looked through that yet. Beat it nerds!
There's a reason for that...it very well may be a reenactment of that scene lol I am hoping to beat Miru once before running it on camera, I've made some great progress but it can be very deadly. Broken Empires is supposed to drop around October but a lot of people have doubts that it'll be ready by then but maybe we can play with a beta version digitally when it drops.
The index card was absolutely legendary! Man Alone is not alone is brilliant. So many of the games you highlighted are games that I have as well and that haven't gotten the time they should. Scarlet Heroes, 50 Fathoms, Deadlands, Savage Pathfinder, Into the Odd... man I could go on, but it was wild to see so many games that I also have but want to get more into. I'm looking forward to all your upcoming work!
I really appreciate the kind words! When I see comments like this it gets me really excited to make the next one. Here’s to motivating each other to play these games 🍻
Looking forward to your Vaesen solo plays….. I got that one on my list, but I have heard mixed reviews
Me too! I’ll probably wait until I have everything physically from the latest kickstarter before I give it a go on camera. My hope is that the solo rules allow for a decent attempt at a solo mystery.
awesome new dragonbane intro!
Thanks! It felt like an extended solo play needed its own intro and I kinda enjoy making them.
I have to get caught up on your videos! I've fallen behind. For the encounter: I did the same thing with Vampire bats... It didn't go well. I think I should have broken it down further in terms of if the encounter was an Easy, Difficult, Hard, or a Deadly one BEFORE rolling any dice to see how many. Then determined if the enemy has spotted me yet and are they near or far. Great advice at the end btw with pulling from your Threads. Take care!
Yeaaaa I’ve been getting into a rhythm lately for making vids. Those are excellent points for the random encounters, noted!
Nice! I also bought Moses' Dragonbane supplement and Man Alone's adventure. I'm still reading through Man Alone's adventure; I agree that the quality and layout is great! I'll be using a handful of things from Moses' supplement, like fishing and alchemy. I'll have to check out Miru, never heard of that actually. If I may offer a suggestion: I'd put Timestamps in your description for the start of each book/supplement you go over :) Take care.
I will eventually do a full video on Miru because it has really blown me away how much I've been enjoying the gameplay loop, here's a link for it: hinokodo.itch.io/miru-an-analog-adventure-game I appreciate you and the feedback! I've been slowly picking up skills like filming, editing, thumbnails but I absolutely could be better with the RUclips specific stuff like that, my descriptions too are also pretty bare but I'll look into them.
You didn’t mention, but many might already know, ManAlone also has a really good RUclips channel worth checking out.
@@WithTheGrain o absolutely! I guess I assume anyone who stumbles upon my channel has already watched at least 25 manalone videos 😅
I really like Dragonbane and want to get it to the table with a group. However, I found the solo mode (as presented here) a little bit boring. I'd probably enjoy it more paired with some sort of dungeon generator rather than the waypoint system.
@@KyleMaxwell that’s absolutely fair. The more time I spend with it, the more I start to see the limitations. It needs a solid companion book I think but it can absolutely be supplemented by other materials.
Been creepin on ur channel for a bit. Great stuff man. Yeah…the storage aspect IS a problem. During the pandemic I got hardcore back into games. Boardgames particularly. But now…four bookcases full later (AND having to store stuff at a friends house)…unless we live in mansions we HAVE to make a conscious effort to be more discerning. I literally have more games than I could play in my lifetime. AND I buy records too so that’s a whole other problem. PLUS junk in ur house also weighs on your mind with clutter! I think we Americans like to consumer to fill a whole (but damn do I love dungeon crawlers). I agree it’s a problem, I think one-in-one-out rule has to start applying. Plus, I’d rather play games than curate a stupid collection. Again, love ur channel bro. Be cool to play some Cursed City w/ ya! Aces yo!
Very well said! I’ve been getting rid of a lot of big stuff lately so that has definitely helped balance things out. Glad you’re enjoying the content! Warhammer quest?!?!
I read your description of your house, your clutter, your bookcases, lack of storage, multiple hobbies. I have just one question, Why are you living in my House!!!???
@oldmanmilo8539 this got me! 😂 almost choked on my beverage.
I am going to try Dragonbane. New sub here :)
@@Kristinquip you’re in the right place 😁 welcome aboard!
"I may never get to be a player again so I'm going to put a lot of effort into my character" .. " so my character is a silly little guy named frederick who insists everyone knows him"
With a blunderbuss… lol and the driving force for the group. I talk about the negatives as pitfalls but there were a lot of positives.
I know quite a few "lifelong GMs" who prefer being a GM. And without getting into any details, there's good reasons why they're better GMs than Players. Happy Holidays!
I hear ya, I am curious though what qualities do they have that make them better GMs than players? Happy Holidays!
@@Sacred_Art_of_Gaming Lol, I was being a bit snarky, but I believe we GMs like moving the gears and levers "behind the screen" and as a player, you typically can't do that. Playing a ttrpg from the perspective of a player just isn't satisfying to some folks.
Thought you might be feeding me some knowledge for self reflection but also a video 😂 snark acknowledged.
Oh, a Dice Disciple! That’s clever. This was a fun video concept. I too would love a TTRPG that had the bonded familiars/Spren like in Stormlight. Syl used to be one of my favorite book characters. I’ve wondered about how I might play as a Spren or the equivalent in another setting, and then my human would actually be the companion. But I didn’t get very far in that thought process 😅 I saw Stormlight dice for sale so maybe there is already a TPG?
Syl is an absolute delight. There is a cosmere ttrpg that got kickstarted this year. I think it releases in 2025 and includes multiple Sanderson universes within it. If the spren aren’t playable I’m sure someone will release a supplement where you can play as a spren.
@ Oh, 2025! Glad I didn’t miss anything. Maybe I should preorder those cards at least. So many non TTRPG playing Cosmere fans are going to buy those bundles or books. That is one of the many good things about franchised RPGs. It makes the hobby bigger and therefore creates more offerings and innovations.
@ exactly! And especially with more heavy hitters entering the arena it’ll loosen up the stranglehold d&d has on things.
For "Demigods being manipulated/bossed around by Gods," check out Scion 2nd Edition - it's pretty much exactly what you talked about. For a martial arts/fighting-game focused game, I've heard good things about Panic at the Dojo - it's meant to be a sort of fighting game simulator. I thought Feng Shui 2 was...just all right. The setting is gonzo as hell, which I love, but the system bounced off of my group. If you like World of Darkness/Storyteller System, White Wolf made an official Street Fighter TTRPG ("Street Fighter: The Storytelling Game") back in 1994 - that might be worth checking out.
I didn't find Ironsworn difficult to take up. But it isn't pure pbta. With the altered dice mechanics and supporting assets and other things I found it quite easy.
Ironsworn is definitely my gateway to PbtA but even that I can’t just go into it without reviewing the moves & mechanics first. Games that I find to be more traditional I can’t jump right in.
Where did you get the book of maps you show during your intro clips?
@@MrMy23 I got them from Yarro Studios link here: yarrostudios.com/collections/map-books The two that I showcase in the intro are the Immersive Battle Maps Vol I Fantasy & Vol II Sci-Fi. They open like a book into a map that is mostly flat when it opens. They also have the battle atlases that is a pack of a bunch of individual maps you pull out separately and are not in “book form” even if it looks like it in their thumbnail.
The versatility and sheer entertainment value of EZD6 are astounding. It’s a fantastic game to bring people into the hobby with a system they will never outgrow.
@@lilcwa couldn’t have said it better myself. It’s going to be a fun one to play solo I think.
Thanks for the mention! Working on EZD6 Horror at the moment.
That’s awesome! I’m hoping to record some ezd6 solo plays next year and dive into your stuff even more 🫡
@@Sacred_Art_of_Gaming Awesome, have fun!
Okay fine! I’ll buy it 💸💸
It’s a great product but feel free to shop around. It’s definitely possible to find it under $30 USD with some patience.
Did you buy it??
@@Chinx313 I’m waiting to find it on sale as suggested. But also only because I already bought a Runequest Bestiary and core book and am really having fun digging into that. One step at a time 😅
The RQ Bestiary is the last RQ book I want to snag in the near future. I recently fell in love with the system. Your excitement for that book just has me that much more pumped to fully dive in
you second guess yourself more than a manticore deciding which sunny spot to nap in btw love how when you talk to yourself you mirror the camera for each character, lovely little detail that adds a lot
😂 imagine completely unedited. Hopefully with every attempt I am getting closer to a smoother experience for an observer. When I play solo normally efficiency is never even a thought. I’m glad that stood out! I wanted to do something to differentiate people in a conversation without going overboard.
"We have an offer you can't refuse." Dragonbane stuff remains in my Wish List and maybe -- just maybe -- in 2025 if things get better (budget). But this is an interesting addition to DB. Love the art and efficient tables included inside. Thanks for the video.
If you can live with PDF, there is a great deal on Dragonbane (and a bunch of other Free League stuff) on humble bundle right now. Definitely recommend it!
Glad you enjoyed it! 2024 was definitely my year of Dragonbane, here’s hoping that 2025 is your year of the Bane of Dragons 🐉

Isn't Star Wars basically High Fantasy with high technology? It also covers the desire to have technology gettting too powerful (Death Star) and magic getting too powerful (the Sith Emperor)?
Talk like that is gonna get us cancelled 😂 But yes I unofficially agree with you but this specific setting in mind would be closer to Arcane than Star Wars. Introducing aliens and space travel changes things radically even if it still technically falls under those criteria.
