My wife and I are building a Bearhawk Model 5 from a kit in our garage. The Bearhawk Model 5 is a large utility bush or STOL aircraft that we think will be perfect for our commuting and adventuring travels.
Our goal is to document our build and show as much of the process as possible, but none of this channel's content should be considered instructional.

Instrument Panel Design, Cutting, Labeling, LRUs, etc.
In this video we show how we laid out our Bearhawk Model Fives panel digitally, transferred the design to the panel, labeling, the installation of Garmin G3X system line replaceable units (LRU), and other electrical components. We will show how we designed and laid out our panel using free software, and then walk you through the process we used for cutting and labeling. We also demonstrate how we made brackets when necessary and the installation of all our Garmin LRUs and other electronic components.

In this video we show covering the interior of our Bearhawk Model Five with Oratex. We liked the idea of using something light, easy to install, easy to repair, and tough, to withstand years of abuse in the cargo area. We also thought it was a good opportunity to get more familiar with Oratex before deciding what to use on the exterior. FYI - The iron recommended by Better Aircraft Fabric is in...

Building The Perfect Ranch Plane In Our Garage
Cheers mate!
Is oratex better than aluminum?
Nice clip thanks! Please lose the rubbish music.
What does the Oratex 6000 cost per yard? Seems to be about ten times the cost of Superflite 104 as near as I can tell.
Colby, your panel looks amazing man, excellent craftsmanship brother!
Enjoy your videos. I currently fly an RV6 and Rans S7S. I’ll probably sell my half of the S7 to my build partner and build some version of Bearhawk.
unless you paint it, oratex doesnt burn ruclips.net/video/NGvG7v2kyuo/видео.htmlsi=LbioxYZCdki53A8S

Wow for a new be hands down guys. I build scale giant RC models and mirror what you guys do to the teee on fabric covering. And this is amazing reminds me of what i do but in a mutch Smaller scale thank you all for the video. ❤💯💪💪💪💪👍👍👍
Colby---- that looks better than what I imagine factory would look like. Did you consider snaps instead of velcro ? was that a swede leather or glove leather ? and where did yo buy your leather ? You make us believe we can do it !!!! 🙂
Great mind
Love the videos and the interesting editing. Love the Bearhawk planes and your videos are inspiring and educational. I hope to hope to see more of this plane through completion and excited to see it fly. Been a year since this last video was posted. Hope the journey has not ended. Curious to see what engine was selected. Im guessing the 540.
good video but the music went too loud between talking
Great to hear, we will wait!
Hey Colby.. how much does it cost to build the Bearhawk not including the cost of the kit itself?
Hey Joe, I'm sure you know it depends greatly on how you decide to build it out. Ours specifically looks like the following. 50k engine, 20k prop, 9k fabric, 30k panel and electrical, 5k interior, and we have around 6k in hardware, but supposedly the new kits come with most of that now.
Wow, Great Job!
Dimna sya bisa mendapatkan bahan seperti kain tersebut ?
Are you guys still doing the build
Great pair of legs there!
You are great ❤
Thank you very much ❤
Kind od dumb question but I assume thats the heavy oracover . 6000 ?
That’s correct
@@ColbyOsborn you re doing a great job with the covering! Uhh, I think the oracover s fantastic! It,s finished ,,all you need to do is fight through the frustrations of applying it. With the traditional process every stage can bring disaster and the stages are many. I have been following a build by an English guy called Algy Yates. He,s doing a Fisher Youngster. Really interesting. An old school craftsman. He is covering with Oracover 600. Check him out ohh the rib stitching looks really tedious. How many hour does that entail on say just the elevator??
Please Could you send me information on what type of material you used to cover? I don't know this material.
If you search "oratex aircraft fabric" the search engine should return your distributor.
are you an experimental builder or an aerospace engineering
Just an experimental builder.
I started covering my cub style rudder yesterday in oratex and that pointed front part was pretty tough to figure out. Today I will put on the other side; heating pulling and stretching to the glue line made by the tape. I was wondering about making my own edge tape but the stuff they sell looks alot better. And you don't need to hassle with another glue-line and masking tape when doing the edge tape, right?
I believe that’s correct. Hope the second side goes smoothly for you!
can you share us some god link to buy Oratex ?
Thank you for confirming my enduring interest in an all-metal airplane! Just gonna have to wait for the RV-15...
I sure hope that you haven't abandoned your build. I was enjoying your videos on the build process. If you have done more building, please post it.
Thanks Kevin! We've went through somewhat of a disaster with getting an engine overhauled. Has been a big setback schedule wise and financially, but I hope to finally be through all of that sometime this summer! The wiring is mostly complete but we haven't posted anything on that as I was hoping to finish the little bit of firewall forward wiring to capture all of it in one video. At any rate, I hope to be working on the project again soon and I certainly plan to continue with documenting our process. Appreciate your kind comments.
@@ColbyOsbornwhat happened with the rebuild? I stalled on my bearhawk patrol project in favor of getting my kolb in the air. Everything costs too much now!
Fun fact this guy I have been to his house he’s from Lincoln Nebraska and I am younger he’s my uncle!
The Draco fall off was silly lol
Which type of fabric you used to cover it sir, is that dacron polyester
Very clean construction..... Lots of Attention on the details! Great job 😉👍🏻
Hey Colby. I sure hope you are still building your plane. Would love to see any progress if there is. Kevin from 🇦🇺
Only just found your channel, great content, thanx. I’m building with no kit so I dare say there’ll be more questions, but for starters, is your dog growling when you point the camera at him? Or trying to smile for the photo? Haha
Thanks! It’s a “smile.” A submissive gesture not uncommon amongst some of the herding breeds. I greatly admire the skills and determination of a scratch builder. Hope to hear more about your project someday.
@@ColbyOsborn Oh, so do I! But I’m not scratch building. I bought a slightly damaged, very dusty, Frankenstein’s monster, and I’m bringing it back to life with some STOL accessories and modern tech.
Im sure
Nice work man.. what are the specific cable tension value
Do you have the exact frame outline ?
Hi 👋 I'm Michelle Dolo
Absolutely beautiful work!
Great build documentation. I hope you guys put out a new video soon

Great videos Colby, building a BH Model B here! A quick question: Where do you download the Garmin CAD files? I have searched and searched and searched... Thanks!
Good
Excellent stuff bro
Very cool. Planning on building this same aircraft for the same mission.
Good video. I need to start rigging my homebuilt but I need the model number for the nicopress tool. I ordered one from riggingwarehouse but its not the right one, I'll need to return it. The 'bite' on the swaging tool is too wide. (1/4")In order to put 3 crimps on a sleeve it looks like it'll need to be 1/8" wide.
Thank you, I was trying to think how to get a photo of the panel, this helps a lot!
I saw a trick that works really well instead of a cable clamp, install your thimble and take your cleco plier s and put the fork end around the narrow part near the nicopress and the other end of the jaw over the round end where the cable goes around the thmble and then put a rubber band over the handles of the cleco pliers so you don't have to hold them. It is just the right tension to hold the cable nicely around the thimble while you position the nicopress and crimp it. Works like a charm. One question I have is when you put your cables to your rudder. How do you plan on setting the cable tension without turnbuckles!??
Sounds like a great tip! Thanks for sharing. Turnbuckles aren’t necessary on the BH rudder cables if you cut the cables to the correct length to hold the rudder peddles at the correct angle. The only tension in the system is created by the springs that hold the rudder pedals up. It's not a closed system so turnbuckles will only adjust the angle of the peddles, not add tension.
