The Story And The Shape
Австралия
Добавлен 7 сен 2021
Exploring reforms happening in Christianity, both in the STORY (our theology) and the SHAPE (our ecclesiology - the church). There are many things in the STORY and the SHAPE of modern Christianity that don't really line up too well with scripture. Fortunately, a lot of work has been done in recent times in an attempt to correct these. Unfortunately, a lot of this work is not very accessible to the average believer - it's locked up in seminary courses or books that many don't know about or don't have time to access. THE STORY AND THE SHAPE seeks to make these reforms more understandable and accessible to a wider audience among the people of God.
Are Dead Saints Watching Us?? The Cloud Of Witnesses In Hebrews 12:1
Hebrews 12:1 mentions "a great cloud of witnesses". Many people believe that this refers to the dead saints who have gone before us into heaven and who are cheering us on from the great beyond. But is this really the case? Who are these witnesses and what does it mean that they are "witnesses"?

The Cross Within The Gospel Story (Pt 3) // Colossians 2:14-15 And The Triumph Of The Cross

According to Colossians 2:14-15 God "cancelled our debt" by "nailing it to the cross", and this somehow "disarmed the powers and principalities". How does all that work? For starters, the debt isn't owed to God, and it isn't "paid" by Jesus. So what is really going here? Tune in to find out! The Cross Within The Gospel Story (Pt 2) // Participation, Not Substitution

Penal Substitutionary Atonement, the idea that Jesus died in our place to pay for our sins instead of us, has a lot of problems. In this lecture we look at some of the major biblical problems with PSA, and then we start to look at what the Bible DOES say about the death of Jesus - that he dies WITH us and we die WITH him - and how that contributes to our salvation. This lecture is the 2nd of 3 ...

Did The Thief On The Cross Go To Heaven? Pt 4: What About "Today"?

In Part 3 of this series asking if the thief on the cross went to heaven we looked at the the idea of access to paradise being restored in the new creation, after the resurrection, in the "age to come". What then do we with the word "today" in Jesus' statement to the thief that "today you will be with me in paradise"? In this video we look at 2 theories of what "today" could have meant if not "...

Part 3 of the series asking "Did The Thief On The Cross Go To Heaven?" Part 1 looked at the idea of Paradise being synonymous with heaven. Part 2 addressed the theory of paradise being a section in Hades for the righteous dead. In this video we look at how the Jewish hope for restored access to paradise (the garden of Eden) was linked to hope for the messianic kingdom in the age to come. Part 1...

Another way to interpret the words of Jesus to the thief on the cross ("today you will be with me in paradise") is that paradise is a section in Hades for the righteous dead whilst they await the final judgement. This interpretation might make better sense than the idea that Jesus and the thief went to heaven, but does it make good sense of all three keys: "paradise", "today" and "kingdom"? Wat...
Did The Thief On The Cross Go To Heaven? Pt 1: Paradise In Heaven

Luke 23 tells the short story of a criminal, commonly referred to as "the thief on the cross", who was crucified next to Jesus. Jesus tells the man "today you will be with me in paradise." Many Christians take this to mean that the thief would be with Jesus in heaven that very day after they both died. But is that a legitimate way to interpret this passage? In this video we take a look at the s...

praise the Lord brother ☺ very usefull video I understood this parable peace be to you
I've been saying this for almost 30 years, and more. Everything in this video also ties into the expansion of the universe. God is everywhere, yes. An expanding universe is not everywhere--not yet. This expanding universe is the post-Big-Bang physical result of the aethereal design originally created by God, which was then contracted and expanded to create the physical universe and the physical bodies we now have. We were non-corporeal before the physical phase of the universe began, and so the answer to the question: Why are we here? is simply to obtain physical bodies and do our best to survive the world until we reach the event in 1 Corinthains 15:50-55 in which "in the twinkling of an eye" we are changed from mortal to immortal. The "twinkling of an eye" is the key point here because in an expanding universe, the only way it could ever fill infinite space is to expand with infinite acceleration to reach infinite speed, and by that unprecedented event, in the twinkling of an eye, we will be changed. The key point here is entropy in an infinite universe that's compressed into a finite (but expanding) area of an infinite space. In just the same way that compression of gasses alters molecular behavior the gasses, the compression of the entire universe alters the vibration and behavior of all the molecules within it, including our DNA, resulting in entropy, degradation, and death; it's like the power behind the curse the world is under--even the amplification of gravity, which would make sense with the "sweat of our brow" in Genesis right after The Fall--which actually fits with the amplification of gravity in a second way with that terminology. The complete expansion of the universe relieves that "cosmic compression", and with that, our spirits will be free to constantly heal and renew our bodies without the interference compression-driven molecular destruction of our DNA over time. Of course, the twinkling of an eye is all it will take for the universe to expand to fill infinite space once it expands at infinite speed. Stars being moved out of their places makes sense with this because the compression of the universe also slows the speed at which light can move. As the compression is relieved and the fabric of space isn't compressed and thickened, the speed of light will increase. We'll no longer have to look at the sky and see an illusion from the past as light from millions of light years travels toward us, but instead, the sky will be filled with stars moving around as the light coming from them accelerates, causing the sky to look like time-lapse video. Presently, the stars we see now are not really located where they seem to be from our isolated vantage point. The speed of light is infinite in an infinite universe that's fully decompressed. But yes, people who want to give up their physical body and live as a spirit forever with God are completely missing the whole reason we came here, which, again, was to get the physical bodies we wanted before we had them. I think people just come down here and sometimes see that they can be a burden if they aren't cared for properly. Many people I've talked to want to just live as pure energy, but they don't know that our eternal bodies are going to be amazing and exactly what we want.
Absent from the body is to be at home with the Lord. Where is the Lord? Heaven, where the dead faithful of the last 2000 years reside.
Do you have any videos on how John 1:1 should be translated?
Thank you for this wonderful explanation, I read it over and over and could not quite grasp the meaning, but thanks to your video, I now understand.
Your teaching is similar to what we are teaching. Correct we don't go to heaven as most Christian believers believe.
I struggled so much with understanding this parable, but now I do!!!
Paul revealed at least three heavens because he was caught up to the third heaven.
Thank so much for this. God deeply bless you
I’ll tell you right now. This was good .
So what is the requirement? Regeneration or sanctification? Or both? Sorry to say this but i don't think you have made this clear at all.
We no longer work for our salvation we walk in our salvation. Glory to our Heavenly Father in Jesus name!
Cut the crap, if you want to know what heaven is like get to know more fully the Holy Spirit. The problem is we really don't want to get to know the Holy Spirit because that requires submission and submission means we're not in charge and we can't stand not being in charge can we? Like it or not we owe everything to God; our life, our breath our very being. I am, we are only because of Him. He's the boss, He's in charge, He's in control - get used to it. Spin your theology any way you like, it's just something you'll ultimately have to get over. Better to bend the knee now sooner rather than later, and you know what? You'll like yourself, you'll like your neighbors and you'll begin to like and appreciate your Heavenly Father. So get on it!
13:20 Yes, you need an ESV. NIV stands for 'Nearly Inspired Version'.
Something I don't understand. Like the parable with the king and the garments (you did a video about) that is describing to live like Christ, because God says to be, following the commandments and doing His Will.... But the thief never was able to change his life or to "straighten up" and turn to worship God. He only had time to profess his belief in who Christ is. So if we are to learn and be as Christ, acting as true Christians and acting as God says and having faith in Christ is only part of entering heaven, how did the thief get to go into paradise (or in the Age to Come) when he only professed his faith without changing his lifestyle?
He did it was probably just a mistranslation or writing thing influenced by culture I mean why would Jesus send him to hades paradise instead of heaven? Maybe what he meant by today is that when he was and took the people out the thief got to stay in hades for 1 day Becuase hell is so far from earth and heaven so it took Jesus one day to get there?
Thanks for this. I wonder if I could offer some friendly pushback in support of another view. You mentioned that (in ancient times) there was only one use of the word witnesses, namely "testifying to something" rather than our additional modern use of "seeing something". However, the New Testament uses witnesses (Greek: martys) the 2nd way also. Eg. In Acts 10:51 says "He was not seen by all the people, but by witnesses whom God had already chosen". The witnesses here refers to some who saw Jesus. In v31 Peter says he witnessed everything Jesus did, again witnessing refers to seeing and hearing. Likewise, in Acts 2:32 and 3:15 Peter says he is a witness "of" the resurrection, meaning he saw the resurrected Christ. For 'witness' to mean testimony here, it would require the word to be in the dative case (bearing witness "to" something, as in testifying to something) however the word is in the genitive case (a witness "of" something, indicating he saw it). Additionally, 1 Thess 2:10 reads "You are witnesses, and so is God, of how holy, righteous and blameless we were among you who believed." Paul is claiming they saw/witnessed his blameless life, not that they testified to it. 1 Timothy 6:12 includes an instruction to confess the faith in the presence of many witnesses, in other words, with many people watching. These verses persuade me that the New Testament word for witnesses can mean either "someone who sees something" and "someone who bears testimony". Naturally, there is overlap. Those who saw an event were well-placed to testify to it, hence the 2 meanings. Thayers Greek Lexicon agrees. It states that "witnesses" had 3 meaning in New Testament Greek, the 1st being the legal sense of bearing testimony, and the 2nd being "a spectator, in the sense of a contest". The example Thayers uses for this is Hebrews 12:1. This is because the context of Hebrews 12:1 is the running race in the athletic games where athletes competed in the stadium surrounded by a great cloud of spectators (witnesses to the contest). Given that this definition fits the context, the Biblical usage listed above as well as the lexical information, I am persuaded that the author of Hebrews had in mind a great cloud of people watching. Let me know if you believe I've missed something or misunderstood. Iron sharpens iron!
Hey Mark, thanks for your comment! I'm all for iron sharpening iron 👍👍. I won't go through all the verses you've listed, but I will say I believe there's the sense of giving testimony or being able to give testimony in all of them. E.g. in the first example you gave, Acts 10:41, the ones chosen as witnesses are commanded to testify, as it says in the very next verse. Also your distinction between "of" and "to" doesn't appear in the Greek, Greek doesn't have such specific conjunctions. The Baker Encyclopaedia Of The Bible, The International Standard Bible Encyclopaedia, Easton's Bible Dictionary, and The New Bible Dictionary all disagree with Thayers Greek Lexicon and only give one sense for witness, relating it to the concept of testimony. The New Bible Dictionary even specifically says "it never occurs in the frequent modern Eng. usage as a synonym of ‘to see’." But if we look at some more details in the passage in question, Hebrews 12:1, I think it's quite clear what witnesses means in the passage. The verse begins with, "Therefore, since.." - two words that point backwards. In whatever sense "we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses," the concept of them being witnesses has already been established, before any imagery of running a race appears. The Greek word for witnesses here is "martyron". The preceding chapter, Hebrews 11, begins by saying in verse 1 that "the ancients were commended", and then concludes by again saying in v39 that "these were all commended." The Greek words translated "commended" in these two verses are "emartyrethesan" and "martyrethentes" respectively. See the root word martyr in all of those words? The heroes of faith in Hebrews 11 all bore a positive testimony regarding their faith. It is this testimony of the faith of these ancients that we are surrounded by and that spur us on.
Here is my theory:when judgement day comes Jesus will take one last trip to hades to rescue the thief from judgement day
Whats the purpose of going to heaven is theres a new earth? How will there be divinity without there being something under such as earth and mankind? Heaven is for God and his angels. Only 144,000 will be taken to heaven to co rule with christ as his chosen ones
So what I'm getting from all this is you guys don't like Protestantism.
How did you come to that conclusion? We are Protestants.
When Jesus ascended to Heaven after his death, burial, and resurrection, He took all who were in Abraham’s Bosom Paradise to Jews. with Him (Ephesians 4:8).
ABRAHAM'S BOSOM: By: Kaufmann Kohler In the New Testament and in Jewish writings a term signifying the abodeof bliss in the other world. According to IV Macc. xiii. 17, the righteous who die for their faith are received by Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in paradise (compare Matt. viii. 11: "Many shall come from the east and the west and sit down with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven"). In Ḳid. 72b, Adda bar Ahaba, a rabbi of the third century, is said to be "sitting in the bosom of Abraham," which means that he has entered paradise. With this should be compared the statement of R. Levi (Gen. R. xlviii.): "In the world to come Abraham sits at the gate of Gehenna, permitting none to enter who bears the seal of the covenant" (see Circumcision). Abraham's blossom was were all dead that followed God went until Jesus came to it when he died and spoke to them. Then those that followed Jesus went to heaven.
The bosom of Abraham
This dude has no sense making skills. There is a place called hades. One part of hades is heaven and the other hades is hell. So Christ would have gone to the hades heaven not hell. So stupid man. Those scriptures aren't enough to tell you that heaven is paradise? Not one time in the bible is hell called paradise. This is about the dumbest thing I have ever heard about the thief on the cross.
I've been scratching my head over this verse for a long time - thanks for making sense of it!
Purgatory.
Thank you 🙏🏾🙏🏾 understood it perfectly
I must be a slow reader. It takes me a lot longer than an afternoon to read through all 4 gospels. 😅 I wonder how all those who believe the penal substitution theology are able to have a close relationship with God. I think David had mentioned (in a different video) that his faith was just as strong even before discovering this clearer understanding. For me, it has made all the difference. My mind couldn’t make sense of it before and therefore I couldn’t really believe. I’ve been following Dr. Jennings of Come and Reason Ministries for years. He has basically been saying the same thing but in different words. Yet somehow it didn’t really sink in. The way David and Paul explain it really works for me. And now when I listen to Dr. Jennings he makes total sense! 😄 I think that THIS is the true gospel, which is still mostly misunderstood. I’m very grateful for these videos! 🙏
This is clearing up so much for me. Thank you! 🙏
It is inconceivable that we will not be able to access heaven This does not take you into the tens of thousands of verifiable accounts of people leaving their body and going to another realm It also ignores a lot of other scriptures in the Bible, where it is clear that we have an existence in heaven after death, Lazarus and the rich man is a good example. Even if it is a parable, Jesus making the point that there is life after death in some kind of disembodied form Is that God’s ultimate plan for us to be disembodied? Doesn’t seem like it, but it seems like part of the plan. This is basically the Jehovah’s Witness argument in this video and as an extra Jehovah’s Witness, I can tell you it’s not correct. Jesus will rule on earth. The kingdom will be on earth. We have a destination in heaven as well.
You’re right that we haven’t taken into account near death experiences, we’re more interested in what the Bible has to say. We would argue that if you have a closer look at all the passages that seem to suggest that we go to heaven after death, none of them actually say that, and there is more evidence in the Bible that we don’t go to heaven. Take the rich man and Lazarus, which you’ve given as an example. Even if Jesus is affirming some sort of disembodied existence after death, it’s not a heavenly one. Many (but not all) Jews in the 1st Century believed that Hades was divided into two sections - one for the righteous and one for the wicked. In this parable, Lazarus is not in heaven but in the righteous section of Hades.
“This is a rescue plan. Not a substitutionary plan.” That was a powerful statement. Thank you! 🙏
This talk was very eye opening. I’ve been struggling to understand both the sacrificial system, and why Jesus had to die. I found myself having to do mental gymnastics in order to ‘be a Christian’. I appreciate your explanation on how Jesus conquered death. It just clicks!😄 But, how can a sinful bride of Christ also overcome death? Is intention and desire to follow Him enough? Also, I still have many questions about animal sacrifices in the OT. If you could unpack that topic in more detail, it would be greatly appreciated. (I’m an animal lover and know God must love them even more than I do). Thank you! 🙏 FYI, I’ve heard that God’s “wrath” is Him simply removing his presence/protection to those who choose to reject Him.
Hi Annie, thanks for your comment! How can a sinful bride of Christ overcome death? By being united with Jesus as his bride, through the Holy Spirit. When we are united with him we share in both his death and his resurrection, as Paul says in Romans 6 (and elsewhere). Here's an analogy that might help: I have a friend who got married several years ago who had a substantial amount of savings. His bride however, was in debt. When they got married it was all shared, he shared in her debt and she shared in his savings, and so she was better off by being united with him. In the same way our being united with Christ lets us share in what is his, including resurrection to immortality. It doesn't depend on our achieving moral perfection, but it does depend on us remaining faithful to him as our "husband". I'm certainly not a perfect spouse to my wife (or vice versa) but part of our remaining faithful to each other in marriage is a constant re-orienting towards each other which involves regular repentance and forgiveness. I think the Christian life is like that. It's not about moral perfection, but it is about long term faithfulness. As for the OT sacrificial system, Andrew Rillera recently released an excellent book called "Lamb Of The Free" which I highly recommend. It's a very dense read, but he has shared some key points from the book on various podcasts recently so I'd recommend looking him up and having a listen.
@@thestoryandtheshape thank you so much for your reply, Paul. It was very helpful. I think I can finally understand the verse about His yoke being easy and burden light. It’s because He’s taking on the majority of the sinful burden for his bride! What a hero! I will look into the resources you recommended. Thanks again!
I have known that since i have been the seventh day Adventist Christian
The Apostle Paul used the NASB..... :) (its a joke)
After watching many different videos on the topic I think the best understanding is "dust you were formed and dust you will return". When we die we are DEAD until the resurrection on the last day. Christ being the first fruits, the dead in Christ is next then lastly all those who are alive at His coming. Sheol/Hades simply means grave. The Rich man and Lazarus is a parable and not meant to teach about what happens when we die but the conditions of mans unbelief and wouldn't believe even if someone rose from the dead. A dead man does not know how long time as passed. All he knows is one moment he is alive and the next moment he has been resurrected.
Agreed!
Not sure if you’re still active (as a channel or content creator)… I’m just wondering: has your journey towards embracing a better (more Biblical) understanding of the Gospel affected how you view universal reconciliation? (I am a convinced Christian Universalist - but can handle pushback in this area) Enjoying what I’ve heard so far 👍
Not sure that it relates to the gospel as such, but my (Paul) position towards universal reconciliation has changed from study, yes. I haven't looked super deeply into it, but at this stage I'm not convinced, although I now think it has a lot more credibility as a biblical perspective than I used to think it did. It's certainly more credible than ECT. Some scholars that I really respect hold to universal reconciliation. However, from what I have seen so far I think there are some big holes. I'm looking into other topics at the moment but that is a subject I definitely want to look closer at in the future.
@@thestoryandtheshape Thanks for taking time to reply- I genuinely appreciate it! I’m 69, raised by a Baptist pastor- then attended RTS (e.g. taught by the likes of RC Sproul)and a Calvinist for 15+ years… About 15 years ago I began exploring what I refer to as Historic Christian Universalism and came to embrace that perspective with all my heart… All to say: if I can ever help in any way please just let me know… BTW- for me it’s what makes the Gospel a “blunt indicative” (Markus Barth, Commentary on Ephesians) and not a mere possibility… Ive especially found this confirmed in drilling down into the “mystery” Paul alludes to in 1 Cor.3, where after saying he determined to preach “Christ and him crucified “ he then goes on to say “HOWEVER, among the mature I speak of a wisdom hidden for ages in a mystery…” Only a couple of years ago did I finally see that “However…”… it’s been life changing for me…. Pistis means Allegiance See book: Salvation by Allegiance. Dr Bales
A lot of assumptions here no actual fact, and also you are wrong in that the Jewish thought always was of some type of life after death and sheol. Sheol was not just a dirt was an actual place. We went to await judgment, two different sides, good and evil, reference Jesus Lazarus parable Do some homework on that. The Jews absolutely believed they would be going to a spiritual place after death.
Kind of totally ignoring all of the near death experiences that have empirically documented the fact that we leave our bodies and do float off into a heavenly room realm

26:00 For the most part I agree. I think I have read this criticism somewhere (Wright? Garlington? Cranford?). However, working from Gal 3.8 and Rom 4.5,18 and knowing Paul is interpreting Gen 12,15,17 in Romans 4 here it might be argued Paul was thinking: That when God promised 'So shall your offspring be' and 'In you shall all the nations be blessed' to Abraham, that Paul thought that Abraham took it as: I will bring in the Gentiles into your family, by way of justifying them (making them righteous). Loosely then, Abraham believed God would grow his family by justifying (ungodly) Gentiles bringing them in. So in a roundabout way - he believed in the Gentiles justification by faith and his belief (in their justification by faith) was counted to him as righteousness. Crazy stuff.
Oooh that’s really interesting. There was no such thing as Gentiles at that time though, so how do you think Abraham understood all those concepts, such as “the nations”, and who is righteous or not, etc? I’ve been reading a bunch of blog the last few days btw, great stuff.
@@thestoryandtheshape Thanks mate. Wright has led me to interpret Romans 4 more about how Paul interprets Genesis, rather than what Abraham actually thought. i.e. How the New Testament authors use the OT. IMO Abraham probably thought God was referring to his own fleshly descendants. Not a worldwide family of faith. It seems likely Abraham saw his and his families role as being somewhat of a blessing to the nations acting as God's chosen people. (cf. Gen 18.17-19, 23f). I typically use Gentiles and nations interchangeably in both testaments. Happy to learn otherwise.
@@thestoryandtheshape How did Abraham understand who is righteous? (e.g. Gen 18?). Id follow your earlier line saying 'righteous does not mean sinless perfection'. Rather a person with an upright character, blameless in some sense (having his sin dealt with in some manner) and having an imperfect practice of all that is right. In Abraham's case we have to contend with the silence on what constitutes righteousness (pre law of Moses; Dt 6.25) and that he is probably referring to people unrelated to him (Normally I associate kinship with God with being righteous. e.g. 'the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father' Mt 13:43; cf. 1 Jn 3.10)
WHERE IS JESUS KINGDOM? WHERE EVER THAT IS THATS WHERE THEY WENT
Lol. No
Show me one scripture, just one, anywhere in the entire Bible that says that anyone, (other than Jesus), ever died and went to a place called Heaven(or Paradise for that matter). I’ll wait!
Abrahams bosom
Praise the Lord. Thanks for sharing.
I needed this today 🙏
“Grace” - how was it used or understood in the 1st century? Any difference between Old Testament vs New Testament?
Grace is a much more explicit theme in the NT and is a concept borrowed and adapted from Greco Roman society. I can’t really answer how it was understood in the 1st Century in just a comment. It’s on my list of future videos to make, but I would recommend the book “Paul And The Power Of Grace” by John Barclay to answer your question
Fantastic! Thank you sir. Hope you and your family are doing well.
@efrains.5494 likewise!
