Projects for old and/or broken laptops
Today I am sharing a few projects that can put old or broken laptops to good use. Laptops are technological marvels, containing staggering amounts of electronics and it would be a shame to let them go to waste. Some of the projects that I am demonstrating are very easy, requiring little to no technical skills, while others are more complex.

      Normally I tie them up together when they are not in use and so far I haven't had an issue with them getting entangled in the wheel. Depending on your luggage carrier, you may be able to make something more elaborate to secure the lose straps with the help of some MOLLE webbing buckles and elastics. Here, for example, I demonstrate how to attach a smooth bottle to a backpack using these materials: ruclips.net/video/F1OEfFrTxT0/видео.html Let me know if this helps! One thing that's important to add here is that you should never ever tell anyone else that you constantly keep a month's worth of food supplies stocked up. If and when a disaster strikes you can be sure that anyone known to be well prepped will become a target for hoodlums. I'd go as far as to say you should keep the existence of that stash hidden from family members as well, since they might accidentally share it's existence to the wrong person outside of your household.

    • @thesurvivalworkshop2397
      @thesurvivalworkshop2397 6 месяцев назад

      Thank you for bringing up this subject! I was wondering whether or not to mention it in the video and eventually decided to leave it out, as it relates to a broader topic about the family and the community. It is almost impossible to hide such a stash from the people you are living with, especially if you are regularly eating from it, so some discretion on their end is necessary. As for the community, the situation can vary greatly. Where I live, neighborly help and neighborhood apps are something normal and they do contribute to a better and safer society because we regularly share information among each other about events, subsidies, scams, burglaries, etc. This does not mean that I share the full extent of my operations with my neighbors but they do know that they can rely on me if they need help with some tools, repairs or something else and in return I can rely on them if something unexpected happens. Unfortunately this is not applicable everywhere in the world, so your consideration is a valid one. Being able to asses what should and should not be shared with your family and community is a vital skill.

    Heel strike?

    • @thesurvivalworkshop2397
      @thesurvivalworkshop2397 9 месяцев назад

      I graze it at times, but it also happens with a standard bicycle saddlebag. My advice is not to use a bag that is too large - not only because it increases the chances of a heel strike but because it also makes the bicycle more unstable.

    Very well executed! Apart from the infrared connection of the controllers, have you encountered other difficulties and problem from either software, hardware or aesthetic point of view? The external power supply doesn't look comfortable to wear for extended periods of time

    • @thesurvivalworkshop2397
      @thesurvivalworkshop2397 10 месяцев назад

      As far as difficulties go, I have to make sure that Steam is already running on my computer, otherwise I can't start the games via the headset. It can be annoying to have to take off the vest, take out the laptop, start Steam, put the laptop back in and put the vest on. As for the power station, the weight isn't as bothersome as finding a good place for it - I can't attach it to the back because it would press on the laptop and reduce the airflow, it's not comfortable to have it in the front, I find the least uncomfortable spot to be somewhere on the side but even that is not ideal if I try to bring my elbows down. In any case, it's not recommended to use virtual reality for prolonged periods of time, so any minor discomfort from the power station does not last long enough to be bothersome.

    Instead of a puncture repair kit for your inner tube, I carry a spare inner tube. That is faster then finding the leak and patch it. The ANWB has a bicycle repair service for 25 Euros each year. So repair man comes with his car to fix your bike. I am also a member of the German Bicycle Union ADFC which offer the same mobile repair service in Germany. Carry an OV-Chipkaart (public transport pay cart) with you, so you can take your bike home by public transport. In case you bike can not be repaired on the road. Allen/ imbus keys can be limited to 3-4-5 mm for most repairs. Sometimes you need a 6 mm allen key. Tire levers can be limited to 2 levers. Some tires are hard to put on the rim, so I use a tire montage tool. That has a claw that pulls the tire onto the rim. Instead of a bottle with car shampoo and water. I just use my water bottle to rinse the bird dropping off. I wipe it off with disposable paper. Batteries I do not carry with me, I just replace the batteries in my lights every month. Standard bike oil is not be used on the chain, you need special chain oil which can withstand the high pressures of the chain parts. Last; Army and Navy stores (dumpzaak) sell also pouches for lower prices then Tasmanian Tiger. But not drop in nature, then you will never find it again, due to camouflage colors.

    • @thesurvivalworkshop2397
      @thesurvivalworkshop2397 Год назад

      Thank you for the detailed feedback! Carrying a spare inner tube is indeed handy but I think it’s wise to also carry a puncture repair kit. I had instances when I punctured both tires or the same tire twice in a row. If there is a thorn, a piece of glass, a nail stuck in the outer tire, etc. and it is not removed, it will just puncture the new inner tube, so it is usually a good idea to take the time to investigate what has happened. What you mentioned about the ANWB is indeed useful and now that I think of it, it would have been a good thing to include in the video. As far as the Netherlands is concerned, I had good experiences with the ANWB but I had no dealings with the ADFC. For what it’s worth, when I write the video scripts, I keep an international target audience in mind, so I try to keep my tips as universal as possible and I can imagine that not all countries have organizations similar to the Dutch ANWB. The necessary size of the Allen/imbus keys can depend on the bike, as well as the attached accessories. For example, my main bike has screws that require sizes 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 or 8. Nevertheless, I completely agree that if you know which sizes you need, it’s a good choice to leave the unnecessary keys at home. Regarding the tire levers, I rarely use more than 1, so yes - I agree that this is also something that can be reduced in number. I have seen tire montage tools but unfortunately I have no experience with them. Regarding the type of cleaning liquid, it’s mostly up to personal preference. Water will do the trick but adding car shampoo makes it easier to remove some stains and leaves a nice silk matt layer, which also protects (to some extent) against new stains and makes the bike look better. I use a bright tactical flashlight as my front bicycle light, so it needs a regular battery replacement, sometimes more than once a week - that’s the main reason why I carry batteries around. As for my rear light, I can indeed just change its batteries monthly. Your comment regarding the bicycle oil is spot on. I was thinking of mentioning that general bicycle oil and bicycle chain oil are two different things but I wanted to keep the video short and simple. Since you have brought up the topic - I mainly use the general bicycle oil on my front suspension, as it is exposed and needs regular cleaning and oiling. That being said, my chain is also exposed but it needs heavier and fortunately less frequent maintenance. My chain maintenance kit includes degreaser, brushes, cloths and of course bicycle chain oil, which would not fit in the pouch. I hope that this clarifies any potential misunderstandings. I like your comment about the “dumpzaken” (army surplus stores for the English speaking audience) in the Netherlands - they do indeed have good prices and in some cases items that are otherwise hard to find, but in my experience the quality is not always the best. They are a good option if you are on a budget and/or know exactly what you are buying but in the end you usually get what you pay for. I am a regular customer of multiple “dumpzaken” and other military gear shops and in my experience Tasmanian Tiger is a brand that consistently produces high quality stuff (I am not receiving any sponsorship to say that). The downside is, like you said the high price.

      Thank you for the feedback. Yes, these two items can be very useful. The reason why I left the can opener out of this kit is another video of mine where I show how cans can be opened without an opener (ruclips.net/video/gfAuymUg83I/видео.html). It is messy but it gets the job done, nevertheless I must admit that I had a hard time finding a can for the video without a ring pull. Where I live the vast majority of cans have a ring pull and can be easily opened without an opener. A good compact tool with a can/bottle opener is a multitool plate which I showcase in another video - ruclips.net/video/0cNim9ugrns/видео.html
