Decided to film one of my rare practice sessions of this song, Burial Rites from my metal project, Labyrinthes (with my writing partner, Callum John MacLeod Shipley). The result is an almost entirely live take of the right side guitar part (the left being prerecorded) mistakes and all. Its by no me...

Great video thanks!!! Been looking into this bass for drop tuning
Amazing playing, tasty sound👍
🙏
Please put the pick down!!😩😩🥴🥴
Why?
Such a good informative video man. Been looking at one of these and might just take the plunge.
Thank you. I’m so pleased you found it helpful.
I was recently checking out some tone-check videos about this guitar (or G4M 638) , cause I am planing on buying some affordable baritone. The white pearl version speaks to me so much! That's why RUclips recommended me your channel and I can't complain!
That’s great! Thanks for your comment. Let me know how you get on with your new baritone.
Great video! What kind of strings are you using? They are looking thicc af! Also, what tuning are you playing? Or did I miss that?
Thanks! Earnie ball bass VI 2837 strings in bass VI standard E.
Hey man it sounds like you're from South Africa, how was the shipping(payment wait period etc?)
Hey mate. Yeah I am originally from South Africa but moved to the UK when I was in my early 20s. So I ordered this to my place in London.
Looks good but why don’t you play with distortion just for demonstration
I do in another video. These videos are incredibly old now. I should make more with this guitar.
Nice demo and explanation. I just received my JS22-7, looking forward to play it. 🙂 I really like the music you play with this beast!
Thank you so much for your kind comment. These videos are so old now. I should really make some new ones with this guitar. I hope you enjoy yours!
I was checking this guitar out and I love how it comes with ceramic pickups. That's the first change I'd make and it's already got 'em.
Yeah I think they compliment the guitar well. I might actually end up upgrading these pickups one day but I’ll probably get a boutique version of something similar to what’s in there now.
I’m sure Bill has added this to his Favorites.
Not sure what this means.
I thought about getting this guitar at one point but, i got ESP LTD MH-417 used with a great price and because it has 25.5” scale length, it’s better for me than the 26.5” scale length.
I wish YT gave more recognition to smaller creators like this. Great work on this production. Solid music video, great mix, amazing playing.
What’s wonderfully kind comment! Thank you so much!
We’re did you get the foam it fits so nicely
Honestly I can’t remember. It was a big sheet that was left over from some packaging. I just cut it to shape.
thank you for sharing that experience. I also have a thing for modifying Squier basses, all my basses are squiers, with gotoh or hipshot bridges, and Quarter Pounders!! 5 st and 4 st jazz basses, but the 4 strings PJ in jazz body mods, i love them, and i have enjoyed the process and of course the result!
nicely done ... bow tie.
The low E is just not thick enough for the tuning. Change it and it should be better.
I’m actually completely content with the string gauge and intonation of this instrument thanks.
Can you send me a link for it pick guard
Tbh honest I think I bought it on Amazon years ago and can’t seem to find the original product. It was very cheap and cheerful and there are many near ideal products out there that will fit this guitar with ease
hey ! sick video mate ! I just have a question, what gauge are you still using with the E octave down tuning ? thanks in advance !
Ernie ball 20-90 6 string bass set
🆒 video 👌
Cheers
Hi there! How did you find the bass stringing on this guitar? Because I have to change the strings and I don't know what to go with!
I use the Ernie ball 6 2837 string bass guitar set for this guitar.
Bro’s accent switches from South African to English so fluidly. It’s like my now fucked up accent in reverse 😂. Quality video mate, I’ve been meaning to pick one of these up for a while. I’m lefty so I’ll have to flip it, but they’re quite cheap so it’s not too bad.
Haha. Cheers, bru! God knows what my accent is doing these days. It sure thickens up when I’m back in the motherland I believe. Let me know how you get on with the guitar. I think they actually have a newer model of this now.
Great method of quad tracking while offsetting phasing, great video and sick guitar i actually just picked one up!
hey what string gauge do you use with this guitar?
10-54 with a 74 on the low string. I’ve not restrung it in a while so I might have even gone with something a little heavier on the low string. It’s in drop A. That might seem a like heavy handed for that tuning but I just enjoy a chunkier string on the lower string
I bought one 2 years ago while building a custom mexican fender strat. Mine unfortunately has the worst string buzz but i can't bare to lift the action.
Yeah mine has a bit of buzz too but I have managed to improve it some now that I’ve learned how to set up a guitar a little better. It’s such a chug machine with the aftermath pickups in it that I don’t mind too much.
@@rathoquarter lol I can see that, I love mine and I may take the juggernaut route 🤷🏻♂️.
What’s the difference between the baritone and a bass Vi
Probably tuning more than anything else.
@@rathoquarter I’m just trying to make a decision if I should go for a baritone or a basics. Both of them are 30 inch scales unless I look for like a 27 baritone.
@@rogelioybarra4068 hey mate. I think the decision on what scale length to go for should ideally be based on what you would like to tune the guitar to. I wouldn’t worry too much about the bass VI vs Baritone distinctions personally (though this is very important to some people!) In very basic terms, the longer the scale length, the lower you can tune but the harder it is likely to be to play intricate music, as the distance between frets gets further and further apart. I would say if you want to tune a whole octave below a standard tuned guitar, then between 28-30 inches in scale length will be almost essential in order for the tuning to be stable and the intonation to be accurate. However if you just want to tune down from F#-A then you could almost certainly get away with a 27inch scale.
The Bunn goes into this a lot on the earlier videos on his channel. I would strongly recommend checking those out as he explains this subject very well. Please feel free to ask if you have more questions.
Wow great mod! Are the pickup rings the original? I wonder if the BK pickups fit the original hole or if you had to grind it?
Yeah I started the mood myself and then realised I was going to need to reshape the hole in the pickup ring so in the end I gave it to a local luthier to do the work.
@@rathoquarterThank you my friend for the response.
Great song! I'm really glad to hear a baritone used in a nice, melodic way, instead of the usual 000, chug, chug spam! And this video deserves more views!
Thank you so much! I appreciate that very much. Sadly because this video isn’t really advertising anything and it doesn’t have a daft eye-catching title or thumbnail, it’s not likely to get loads of passing traffic. But I don’t really mind. I’m just appreciative of anyone who watches and enjoys the sound and visuals. More on the way. Thanks again for your kind comment.
Seems most videos have people fuddling around on the b string. Hmmm.....
Hopefully you got a broader sense of the guitar from this video?
Sub-Zero.. Mortal Kombat..
I forgot to mention i do have a Classic Vibe 60's jazz with Duncan Quarter Pounders in it, it doesn't have the high end bright punch but it does habe some beef!
I like the higher range of the stock pick ups but like you mentioned the new have a nice body of low end with a nice grit. I wonder if the brass saddles give it a darker sound as well 🤔. I just put a Classic Vibe style high mass bridge on the new Classic Vibe 70s P-Bass i just got in a trade because it has thr basic cheap thin bridge and it came to life even more after the I changed the tone pot's and adjusted the stock pick ups.
I have this js22-7 and plan on getting the js22-7 king V to match here soon.
Wasn’t aware of the JS22-7 King V but it looks incredible!
@@rathoquarter they either just come out or are coming out soon. I think you have to pre order them right now
What`s the music in intro? so cool
It’s my track “Basilisk.” You can find it on any of the streaming platforms or see the video I made for it here: ruclips.net/video/Ru9n3Mjsl8I/видео.htmlsi=movfiXMcMoNhVXfW
So if it’s tuned e to e…its actually a Bass VI right?
I call it a baritone because that’s what the manufacturer calls it. If you watch the full video you will notice that I also refer to it as a Bass VI type instrument. The manufacturer also acknowledges this with the VI in the guitars name. I have had this guitar tuned to E standard, drop D as well as a couple other tunings: does the guitar cease to be a bass VI as soon as the tuning changes? Seems a fairly flimsy basis for naming the instrument to be honest. But please feel to call it whatever you wish. I will continue to refer to the guitar exactly as the designers and manufacturers have named it. Thanks for the comment.
fabuleux !!!!!!!!!!!
Would 13-62 be ok for drop A? I think maybe the .013 will be too tight?
I have no idea to be honest. For drop A you could definitely get away with a shorter scale length than this guitar. I have my 26.5 inch scale Jackson tuned to drop A and it works beautifully
Happy New Year! And very well done! I think you cut off that killer riff just a tad too soon, though.
The rare Squier Jazzmaster baritone you are referring to is 27" scale and has P90. The Fender/Squier equivalent of this one (30") is the Bass VI, with Jaguar pickups
No. The Vintage Modified Baritone Jazzmaster that I’m referring to has a 30 inch scale length.
@@rathoquarter Touche', you're right! Only the tele baritones is 27" while the offsets baritones (Jazz and Jag/BassVI) are all 30"
Mat bro, help me please! I have a squier jazz bass deluxe V, but my pickups are the same size in both bridge and neck, 3.73 long, .73 wide, do you maybe know if the Seymour Duncan SJ5-3s pickups fit my bass?
Honestly I have no idea I’m afraid.
Cool! I took basically the same bass and went a bit buck wild. Changed out all the electronics, as it had the 4 knob setup which I hated. (Separate V&T for each PU and side Jack) and went 3 knob. Routed and installed a big Musicman bucker in the bridge position. Refretted it with stainless steel frets, and a stainless steel nut. (Huge amount of work there) After filling the old Jack hole, painted it with gold base, heavy gold flake, topped off with a voodoo violet purple candy, with a white pearl pick guard to make it pop, and viola!!! Old girl runs like a race car, and sexy to boot.🤘🏻
Jesus that sounds incredible. I thought my upgrade was ambitious but you’ve gone too a whole other level there.
@@rathoquarter I didn’t really have anything to lose, as the poor bass was ate up. I won’t lie though, The refret was drama (my first refret) and I must’ve painted that thing at least 5 times before I got one I liked!
How wear-resistant is the satin black finish on this one? It clearly looks classy AF until the first glossy spots appear :|
It doesn’t seem to be too bad to be honest. Personally I don’t mind a little wear and I do already have a chip in the paint finish on this guitar, but none of the glossiness so far.
@@rathoquarter Thank you!
Officially 1k likes! Great job man great video!
Freaking beautiful! Thanks for posting this, seriously!
Thank you very much! I appreciate that. We worked really hard on it so it’s great to have positive feedback like this. Lots of new music (and videos) on the way.
I had this in my basket for a while, but after reading tons of reviews here, mainly negative about certain strings not being long enough, I decided to go to the SubZero Paradigm Baritone Electric Guitar, Black Burl Burst, it's a 27 inch rather than the 30. I play ambient guitar mostly, so I didn't mind the shorter scale in that respect, the Para also has locking tuners, and a coil split function. Also I have up until now had little intonation problems. I am not trying one upmanship here, I really did like the rogue. Now after seeing what strings you use, I will have to rethink the purchase of a V1 now, after all, you can never have enough guitars eh? Excellent video.
Thank you! That’s very kind of you. Yeah, I think this instrument is a bit of a weird one. I had an incredibly close attachment to it at one point but the love has started to fade a little. Sometimes I just miss playing on a normal guitar with normal string gauges. That Ernie ball set on this guitar does not feel like that at all. Also the urge for metal players to go lower and lower can be weird. Loads of bands are starting to tackle that problem both digitally and with the evertune bridge now. And I’m some ways that’s kind of smart. I’d love to make another video on this whole subject more broadly actually. I have a few pieces of music that I’ve written on the Rogue VI that are quite dear to me (and would like to finish.) Once those are done and out, I will probably put the guitar on sabbatical for a time while I have fun with others in my collection. If you do end up going for some guitar that is in the 30inch scale neighbourhood, I’d also look at the Gretsch jet baritone. More expensive but it’s a classy well made instrument. I just got one and I can see it performing better than this one. Regarding the string lengths: I never really understood this problem because I always used that Ernie ball set and they’ve always been fine but I’m due a restring soon so I guess we’ll see. Thanks again and feel free to let me know if you pull the trigger on a longer scale instrument. I’d love to hear what you choose.
Very helpful video, helping me to, in the end, not buy it. 😅
Thanks for watching. The guitar is definitely not for everyone! Be curious to hear if there was some alternative that you did go for?
@@rathoquarter Not yet, sort of looking for a humbucking jazzmaster without the long scale but equally pretty.
Any thoughts on the viability of this instrument being used in the place of a traditional bass? I play a lot of indie/alt rock music, and I think that with a decent amp EQ it could be a pretty decent bass with the options for more melodic work in the higher registers.
I’ve never tried it like that. I also felt no real inclination to try it that way but I’ve been getting quite a few questions like this so I’ve decided to rework a little piece of music I wrote ages ago to try exactly that set up. So I’ll report back to you once I’ve tried. Personally I love a big meaty bass sound though and I’m not sure this guitar or pickups would give you that. But we’ll see how it pans out.
You still have the almighty axe! Nice one! Your videos persuaded me to buy one. But after a few weeks I had to part ways. I just could not gell with it.
Yeah I get that. It’s an unwieldy beast. My love for it has definitely been wavering recently. But I do have several songs in progress that I’ve written on it, so it won’t be going anywhere soon.
A very professional video. 10/10!
Thank you so much, Sir. Hopefully more videos coming in the future.
I saved your video as a reference for future videos that I will made. Thank you!@@rathoquarter
Did you need to shim the neck to accommodate the new bridge?
Nope.
