My Brother in law was stationed aboard her. Others in my family served also I was Navy and proud
My home from 88 to 92. besides my wife and kids, the best part of my life. the song coming to America was our refueling song for emergency breakaway. Coming home from Desert storm they started playing it as soon as we crossed the bay bridge tunnel till we hit pier 11. MS2 mcmahon. aft freezer, aft galley, CO's mess with Capt Hewing.
That was back in '80. Thru the canall back n forth.
I served on the America from Nov '79 to April '83 with two Indian Ocean deployments. Nice to hear from you guys.
CV66 America must of come through the Canal. CV64 Constellation we were there prior to anyone, the first in the I/O. CV64 was suppose to be relieved by CV61 Ranger the POS which failed and eventually by CV41 Midway. I am guessing CV66 was relieved by CV41 Midway? Didn't know Atlantic Carriers were involved that early.
@bobbycv64 yeah had to go thru canal bak n forth. I think 66 relieve 64, ended with 7 mos deployment. Don't remember who relieved 66 but was late 1 month.
@@leotorres1709 - 64 was 1st, we never saw 66, Ranger 61 was to relieve us (2nd), however, got in a collision and 64 had to wait for Midway 41 (3rd) and then we went back to San Diego, 8 month cruise. You must of relieved Midway 41.
Bottom line @leotorres1709 - 66 did her Job, just like 64, 41. 61 was a POS.
This was one of several videos I wanted to post videos because of the song. I served on USS Constellation CV64 - Western Pacific / Indian Ocean (77-81)

I did the 1981 cruise with an S-3 squadron. Awesome ship.
I served on her 1969 to 1972 S2 div
I was on the america from 1983 thru 1986 the air wing, t a d to the master at arms force. Allot of memories, good shipmates.
I served on the America from October 9, 1986 to my discharge on April 24, 1990. I came aboard right after the 1986 Med Cruise, went through the yard period from November 20, 1986 to February 11, 1988 and the work-ups for that year. Then came the NATO cruise and the Med/IO cruise in 1989, and finally, my exit. We visited New York City in April 1988 for Fleet Week, Mayport, FL in September after REFTRA, and Fort Lauderdale in March 1990 during Spring Break. An experience that I wouldn't trade for the world.
Yeah. Just imagine if your dad died in one of these firefights, and you celebrate his memory with a song like this. “Amazing Grace”, perhaps, might be a more fitting coda.
the men of the squadron usually pick the song, so take it up with the pilots
Thanks for all who served I worked the waiist cats 3 and 4 What Rush! Vf102 Diamond Backs

The Beast lives on.
Served her 67-68 in W Division - made the Med and 1st Vietnam cruises
My Dad was on the America at that time. We're you on her when she was in the Gulf of Tonkin?
@@aljones9114 Yes I was. What division (or rating) was your Dad in?
I'm not sure Chuck. I'll have to check with my Mom. My Dad passed away in 2013. Trying to help her get some benefits from VA. They told her today the America was in the Tonkin in 72 but no record of any other time. But they are opening a case for her.
Thank you for the information. I may check back with you soon when I find out more information. Thank you for your service.
I was onboard in 1970 as an AE2. supporting the A7Es the newest jets in the fleet,
Fear the bones!
Amazing memories, I was air wing with the Dragonslayers, HS-11. We were on the America anytime it pulled out of port from work ups to the cruises. I serve from 81to 85 and did all the work ups/cruises from 83 to 85 on the America. Was a young E3 the first cruise, then made 3rd class and earned my Air Warfare wings in 83. Was told I was one of the first to earn them in my squadron as a E4 back then, even made 2nd class on that ship before I got out. When we were in port at Portsmouth England when the Beirut barracks bombing occurred, we had an emergency departure to Beirut, left hundreds of sailors behind. The ship earned two Navy Expeditionary medals following this ordeal. Venezuela, Greece Spain, England, the Mediterranean, North Atlantic, Scotland, France, Morocco the Caribbean, Virgin Islands, Sri Lanka, were some of the many places I got to see on that ship. Do you believe I missed the navy so much I went back into the Reserves from 2004 to 2008? Talk about a break in service. I so wish she was turned into a museum so I could see her again.
We were in the shipyards for the marine barracks bombing in 83/ Grenada Operation Urgent Fury, pulled a NO NOTICE exercise to go from cold steal to combat ready. Sea trails and low and behold CVW-1 was on the pier waiting for us. On load and qualified the deck. Backed up Indy.
That was an AWSOME video! Still and always will be the sexiest jet ever. But showing the Hornet at the end kinda kills it. Just saying.
Hornets are gay!
My brother was on her 1969-70 Vietnam, Phantom mechanic VF-92, he graduated high school 1966. CV-66.
Getting nostalgic as the Suez canal has been in the news, was on her in 83 when we went through, I was haze gray and underway from 1981 to 1984, lots of great memories, have plenty of pics from that time
Thank you to all the men and women who were served. I have a friend who was the capt. of the ship. R Byron Fuller. He is a friend. My brother met him at a marina in Jacksonville Florida back in the early 80s. And became good friends with him. we learned who he was and what he had gone through. He went in the Navy as an enlisted man. He became an officer and he got the nickname Maverik. He retired as an admiral. He was shot down in a A4 Skyhawk and held POW for five years in north Vietnam. He is an amazing man and has survived an ordeal that most of us could not imagine.
Captain Fuller was America's skipper for part of the time I was aboard with VAW 124, 1975, 76, 77, 78. A respected gentleman who saw the viscous side of things in Viet Nam as a POW. Great man.
Terrible song for such an awesome squadron 😖
