One radio does all of this?
I wish! The more you spend, the more features you get. Some basic radios can connect to a PC or Pi to expand digital uses. Like ft8, winlink, aprs etc. But no radio has everything!
the ending, lol it happened to me in a normal car many times. did you lower your pressure? it make a world of difference.
@@Francois_Dupont yes! This was also mid May, with 30°C temps, and a high altitude. This stuff was like absolute soup, it was also a lot steeper then it looks 🤣 (always right?!)
@@darryldowney i guess you also have emergency grip trax boards? (or whatever its called). anyway i dont want to waste your time. i wish you great health!
@@Francois_Dupont not wasting my time at all sir! I appreciate the comment! I personally did not have any boards at this particular time.
Thanks for posting this Darryl! Remote repeater coverage and APRS are great tools for back country communication. Writing your amateur radio license is short term pain for long term gain as you have the license for life.
Couldn't agree more. It only took a few weeks (of which, only two days per week) and its done! Forever. Until I want to get advanced that is!
Very insightful, especially the APRS and message to mobile functions! Thank you for posting this!
These are out of stock for months now. How did you manage to get one?
You must email him, ask to be on the waiting list, he makes about 50 at a time and when your turn comes up, he will send you a PayPal invoice. There is a Facebook group that he (Yu BG2FX) is quite active in. I would recommend starting there.
I grew up in that part of the Island and many fond memories of Mt Prevost, spending time on and around it
I am glad I found a channel that actually shows you how to program a uv 5r I have had a problem with my cables I have bought 2
i just saw you are VA7? i never seen a VA7 HAM before. i suppose you are from BC or something? my NVIS setup never reach that far. lol
@@Francois_Dupont Yep! Vancouver Island to be more specific.
Great video So glad I reached out to my local radio club, dragged my feet for years, got my basic with honors in Dec of 2023 and have had such a great year being a ham, so many nice people with tons in common
i did the exam during the "V" and it was done thru Skype. i studied for 3days before the exam and got 95% or something. if you put your mind to it and study hard for a couple of days you'll pass easy. *DO IT!!*
@@Francois_Dupont absolutely! CONGRATS!
Is there a programming cable you recommend? I thought the package I got came with a cable but it is a usb charger. ;)
@@dirtsmiles8098 unfortunately I do not have a recommendation. I only have one and it came with one of my uv5r's from aliexpress and seems to work. Sorry!
I would have done the exam years ago, but those "negative" questions throw me for a loop every time... my brain isn't wired to except that style of questioning :(
@@ppi57 then don't worry about understanding. Just flash card the questions and memorize the answers! It's multiple choice and all the questions and answers are available in the link below in a pdf!
@@darryldowney memorize the questions... all 600?. I can hardly remember what I did yesterday. LOL.
@@ppi57 welp, sorry mate. It's not for everyone. A 10yr old girl just took the exam at our local club and passed. If you really want to do it, YOU CAN DO IT!
Do you need a pc to do this, or can you use a smartphone or Apple iPad, as this is all I have 😢
@@jasonclarke7422 this is definitely just a pc method. There is a bluetooth programmer and different software for android devices that will work. Unfortunately I'm unfamiliar with it.
@@darryldowney The BT adapter is not very good, only found 19 channels no activity where Chirp found 134 channels within 60 miles, some with activity
I highly recommend the Annapolis Valley Club online course its awesome. Al is a great instructor and he shows you how to to be a proper operator so you will be ready to get right on the air when you pass the exam without scratching your head. Also take those practice exams on the Canadian governments website as much as possible as much as you can stand to do them, they really prepare you for the exam.
@@patthesoundguy Great info! The ISED website, has all the questions and answers readily available in addition to the practice test!
Heya from Kingston Ontario :) happy to hear you can do the exam online ... i did a course during the pandemic.. but never had a chance to do the exam so it got back burnered ... with the way things are going i need to get back on this journey and get on the air ..72/73
@@Drifter69 hello! Try a practice test or two and see where you are at or refresh yourself! When you are ready to take the test contact your local club and I'm sure they have examiners that would love to issue an exam!
can you make a video programming Baofeng BF-888s using CHIRP making a private channel
@@ashura7493 If chirp supports the BF-888s it would be an identical process. I don't have a BF-888 unfortunately. And I'm not quite sure what you mean about a private channel.. There is no encryption or anything on these radios.

How to set a uhf mode on baofeng, i got this one too, and always IT says i have ufo
no way u got an ufo?! u got aliens with it??
I have this one and it was my go to, edc radio as it is quite tough. I liked it so much I picked up the H2 for ham and DMR. I unlocked the H2 but haven’t figured out how to unlock the HA1G. I like how simple yet tough they are. I’ve even showered with it.
@@thetravi1348 I did see some firmware online (linked in a youtube video somewhere) to open up the HA1G, but the HA1UV is also on its way (next month I think)!! Really looking forward to that!
@@darryldowneyi love my ha1g even with its quirky menu. A parallel ham would be great.
Thx. Viewers should know that the HAM exam in Canada is NOT the easy peasy cakewalk like it is in the USA. Much more technical questions even at the Basic level.
Well DAMMIT! Already got a built OBS 7.3 Powerstroke on 35's and just bought a 2000 PF as my daily. I WAS gonnna keep the Pathfinder stock. I think you just changed my damn mind ha ha.
I was a Snake breeding helper there for a couple weeks. Way back, brings back memories.
Love the content broski, just got signed up for the course next mnth and I'm stoked to be able to get my license. Much love from Vancouver Island BC.
Can you legally operate a 5watt gmrs radio in Canada?
If I'm right I believe you can listen to any and all but need a license to transmit
@@Tyguy266far as l know, there is no licence available for 5 watt gmrs in Canada. Limit is 2 watts with a fixed antenna. Not sure if a USA GMRS licence would allow you to operate the radio in Canada? That said, unless you use the repeater function, nobody would be the wiser with such a low power output. Still thinking about getting one :)
@Thomas-dz4eg oh OK sweet. I'm super new and just starting to get into it all. I love everything Ham lol. Thank you for the info 🙏
Not in Canada! 2w from an ISED type approved radio. This radio is neither, this is a fantastic radio for those living in the US or travelling to the US (with a US GMRS licence)
In my personal opinion, I think Canada needs to step up its GMRS game. This would be an easy entry point to the radio hobby.
Is there a way to copy another uv5r to another one ?
After programming one radio, you will have a save file from chirp, you could load that into as many radios as you like! Or it's maybe someone else's uv5r, borrow it, connect it, "read" the radio, and then unplug the radio, plug in the next one and write the programming to it.
This is totally different nothing like what come up on my screen I can't even download what I got from the radio Quarry can't pick the strength and I have 50 something channels when I searched there's nothing straightforward about this whatsoever I program my Bearcat police scanner in 5 minutes with 100 channels this is crap
Sorry mate, I should probably make a new video. This video is from 2021, a FULL new version of chirp came out in the last couple years.
Thanks this is just what I needed🥊
@@Tobias_Kevorkazito you can do it!
How you get that photo on it?
@@onemorething100 the programming software has the option to change the start up photo!
I can't remember the procedure off the top of my head, but remember it being on a seperate tab within the settings.
@@darryldowney Thank You
Did you request the old version? I thought the new version had a barrel connector for power and the side rails wouldn’t fit.

@@ve3sif I will absolutely keep you posted. From what I've played around with so far, it is fantastic.
Is there a software for a Motorola XPR 7550e radio? and if you know how to program just like how you did with the Baofeng UV-5R
Motorola locks the software and a license is needed 😒
Do we need Ham license if we just want to use Baofeng UV-5R (or other Baofeng variant) much like off the shelf two way FRS radios between our family at the provincial park 2-3KM range.
The short answer yes. Basically any radio that you can manually select a frequency will require a licence. As opposed to a frs/gmrs radio that has pre-programmed channels that are all locked and non-editable. Also in Canada UV-5R's are not really legal for licenced hams either, they have not been specifically tested and approved for Canada.. 🤔 But I also have a pile of them, so.....
If you are curious how shitty the electronics are in a baofeng, there are lots of videos on YT showing the harmonics that are produced on unintended frequencies, spilling signals into emergency service frequencies, airband etc, all while you may only think you are transmitting in gmrs/frs frequency.
do you need a ham license to operate on a GMRS radio?
Not in Canada.
There are no GMRS repeaters in Canada.
i can not even get chirp to down load onto my phone the only thing i have connected to the web.
Sorry @larryjanson4011 I don't have any experience trying to use chirp on a mobile device.
does chirp cost money?
Nope, you could donate to the developer if you are so inclined.
This is the definition of lets get right into it! #MRGETITDONE
Had me till satan 😂 tf
we are waiting for part 2🙂
This bird is spinning out of control in space now.. No more images.
Chirp was a slightly different but I figured it out. Thank you
mine came in english
I have tried to do this many times, says baofeng will no longer connect on Com port 2.
I haven trouble programming mine
Pathfinder any time 😍
I have bought my first amateur radio on the net what will happen if use it without license Boefang did not ask me for license
You can also buy a car without a licence.
I have a little problem - whenever I try to download from radio, the cloning screen does not come up and I do not get the flashing light on the radio. It might be something wrong with my laptop because I tried doing it with both of my radios but it still did not work.
Try another programming cable. It's almost always the cable!
another boring canadian video! bro your part 2 sucks as much as part 1, just watch it, you provide nothing but void

Im doing my first online course how hard did u feel the course was ?
Update for the UV-5R. I was recently browsing the Baofeng Tech USA site. The UV-5R has been discontinued by them which means they are no longer supporting it. This includes all other variants of the base model. From what I've read, they are promoting the BF-F8HP. You can purchase the UV-5R from other vendors that are selling it. Word I got from Baofeng it is still being produced.
Ok dont my my previous comment here but mind if I ask? Are you in anyway still in touch with the guy driving the red corolla. I believe his name was "Grant Kozier". I'm asking because I want him and maybe a few of his friends from bentmafkfilms to know that the stuff they did back then were cool specially to a young man like me and has inspired my friends to make a cool little cartoon/anime.
I talk to him once in a while. I will let him know.
I keep get ting 'Error communicating with radio'.' I have tried several times.
