Earth Board Game Review - “Did This Kill Wingspan?”

We are not reaching by comparing Earth and Wingspan. They clearly share a lot of the same DNA. But are we reaching by asking if Earth takes Wingspan’s place as the industry standard for Naturey Tableau-Builders? Also no! At least we don’t think so. Let us know what you think.

How ‘Bout Now - Marvel Champions, Get On Board, and Long Shot
In hindsight glad I didn’t back.
Great of you to give visibility to these games! Although, that was one weird way to set up a Yinsh game, it basically makes the beginning of the game boring as you move your rings out of the center so they can actually start doing something. You would be better served by tossing all the rings in the air and set them up where they landed. :)
In DVONN, around 8 mins 20 forbidden move by white: stone surrounded on all 6 sides
Small tip: when you want to refer to a video time on YT, if you write it in this format: 8:20, it automatically makes a link to that point.
Aged like milk....
This is easily the best deckbuilder I've played in ages. This video aged like milk. You would have been correct if this was about the Heroes 3 game.
There’s another one named Tamsk
Tamsk is not part of the series anymore, though. It was replaced by Tzaar. The two games missing from the video to complete the 7-game Gipf series are Pünct and Lyngk (which are usually regarded as the weakest ones).
aaaaaAAAHHH this review is so bad, im gonna getcha
Seeing this video after having done a playthrough of the board game with another experienced Slay the Spire gamer. Agree, the price is steep comparatively. But the multiplayer experience and tweaks to cards/relics really refreshed the game while still having the smooth mechanics that we love from the videogame. I think this video ultimately misses.. I had a blast puzzling through the Acts with a buddy and would recommend it to those who can swing the cost
I did not enjoy this review, at all. Shame really, 'cause you seem very articulate and informed. There is just no substance here.
Misinformed. This guy has no idea how much card sleeves cost alone for so many cards.
This guy had no idea about more things. But it doesn't matter, the game's awesome and clearly worth every penny.
The digital game is a steal( bought it several time, multiple systems etc) . A game is as valuable as the amount of time you will put into, period. I will play the shit out of this board game, easy value.
I used to own the entire Gipf series. Watching you guys play makes me miss them. Might need to reacquire them. Zertz, Devon, and Yinsh were my favorites.
I have over 200 hours in STS and 140 for the board game plus for all the endless fun they’ve already given me I think is more than a fair trade off IMO
This video contains wording and opinions, from a person that has VERY clearly played slay the spire less than 20 hours. Slay the Spire is severely more awesome in the video game. The fact that this has been optimised for co-op by the same development team that created one of the most awesome deck builders of all time alone, is worth the 100$. Please don't listen to this dude, he hasn't played the game.
Love this game & the stories it generates among friends. I bought it a few years back for a pretty penny - but even so, it's probably got a better cost per play ratio than much of my collection
Regardless of your points, im still going to buy slay the spire board game.
is the upgrade worth it?
Doesn’t change gameplay but the chips feel nice
Thanks for your review. I’m looking for a board game that will support more players yet I can play solo. This may meet the criteria. When do we meet as a game group, it’s grown in size and we usually have more than 4 players. I’ve only played Wing Span on BGA. Enjoyed it but didn’t say, I need to buy this now. I felt it was a bit to solitaire with more than one player. This looks like such a great engine building, creative and strategic game.
You are absolutely correct
I can't decide if it's a "lazy gamer" thing, to now want to set up the items you get with the game, or just a lack of the love of textile set-up and play (same issues with This War of Mine or Frostpunk). No points here made me rethink my last-pledge.
Nice video!
I had a friend in college who introduced this game to us, and we had a blast with it. I was so disappointed when I found out that it was so hard to acquire.
Nice succinct video! I think you captured the fun in a quick format. And I love the Knizia games over your shoulder.
Thanks for noticing! Excited for a version of Quo Vadis that’s a little more anthropomorphic.
I really liked that one, especially because it plays so quickly. If it were longer, I'd hate that I'm chasing a 50/50 chance that a chanterelle is worth either 1 or 7 points. But, in a game that is only 15 minutes long, you can go all in on whatever sliver of information you have, and it makes for a really fun, but tense game, with lots of dramatic moments as additional info is revealed.
Yeah I forgot maybe the best part. It’s about $20 and about 20 minutes!
Also the Latin name is **yellow ones**
It's so true that it hurts to watch this. Well done.
4:03 - "If you can afford it and/or like slay the spire, this video is not for you." HAHAHAHHHAHAHAHHAHHAHAHHAHAH
Close. If you love slay the spire like it’s your favorite thing and/or money is no object then it makes sense to back this.
@@caffeineandcardboard1536 Theres basically no difference between our statements.
Fine review, just lose the silly title. “Does this kill X?” is very tired and played out.
My partner and I both play Slay the Spire and love it, and we also love sitting down to play a long board game together. The kind of experience I'd get out of the board game is that I get to share an experience with my partner in a physical medium, no screens, that we can play by candlelight. To me, it really does need to exist because those things I'm looking to get out of it are things I don't get from the other digital/physical games we have. I haven't played any good cooperative deck builders that my partner really likes. The "clunk" is heavily simplified, with one dice roll for each turn, and the maths is fairly minimal. They have changed things like vuln and weak from being per turn effects to per attack effects, and have simplified the numbers involved so that you're never having to add two digit numbers really. The price seems pretty acceptable to me, and we are by no means drowning in money. I feel like if you are going to sink tens to hundreds of hours into a game with friends, that price justifies itself. If you play even 25 hours, between two people that adds up to $3/person/hour. That's well below the price you'd pay to go to the cinema. It's also not about whether it is more expensive than the digital game...because I'm buying it in addition to the digital game that I have already sunk a hundred hours into. IMo, you've understated the differences, and overstated the limitations in a way that assigns a one size fits all value to this game that is just wrong for so many people
Wow the auction mechanic (top 2 bidders pay but only the highest wins) that he riffed on towards the end is very intriguing and I'd love to see a game designed around it! It's also interesting that you are both therapists by trade. I'd love to see more interviews or discussion about the intersection of board gaming and therapy. How do you feel about Cockroach Poker, a delightful game that is fundamentally about mental abuse and bullying?
I’m for it! Actually we both have some experience with gamefying our work (though I know we try not to lean too heavily on it) but a social deduction game could absolutely feed into a fruitful conversation about what it feels like to be lied to, to believe a person who is lying, to assume someone is lying when they’re telling the truth. Often more engaging than discussion alone. My card really is a stink bug though… I’m serious.
Great video! Just confirms my pre-existing views that Dr. Knizia is amazing, and still one of the best designers out there. Thanks to him for sharing his insights here, and congrats to you guys for the chance you got to talk with a legend.
Excellent interview, guys, very exciting!
Wonderful interview. Well done on a great job.
What a wonderful opportunity you both had. That was fun! Thank you for sharing. Mike Delisio nicknamed Mille Fiori "Ganz Schön Knizia".
Here's the challenge. I have Wingspan already and have gone deep into it. Is Earth good enough to make me forego all that? This didn't differentiate enough to look away from Wingspan.
It is a deeper/heavier game. If Wingspan already scratches the itch. I’m not here to talk you out of that. I own them both.
@@caffeineandcardboard1536 No argument. The idea is you're first or best. I don't know that Earth is heavy enough to equal Ark Nova and too late to take on Wingspan. If you're going to take these take games on something new has to be part of it. I don't think Earth does that so they'll send you up playing second to both. A shame because I think the opportunity is there.
@@bullfrog417 Earth does though. The lack of downtime when others take a turn, the creation of your own chain of actions on your tableau, the fact that it plays in a little over an hour with 5 people (have done it). Really want to play Ark Nova but do t have the time needed? Earth. Like Ark Nova, it plays well solo. And it isn’t a $60-$80 dollar game.
And earth is so easy to set up as well. It surely is not a heavy game but for what it is, it offers a lot. Me and my wife play this game almost every day, at least 3-4 times a week. And we do own and love wingspan, earth will not replace it because its a wonderful game we want to own. But earth just works so brilliantly easy and provides a very unique feeling. The fact that you can always do something and have little to no downtime is a bigger deal than you might think. "What? My Turn? But didnt I Just...." Is a very common reaction. Even after many plays.
Update: Ra came today. Still my favorite game.
How did you guys pull this off?
Real answer: we asked nicely. We are having fun with this little project but also want to be ambitious :)
Nice video! If you want to recommend Glory to Rome without the expensive piece tag for a used copy, Mottainai is the same game rethemed and still in print.
1:39 forgot one gray kitten. 1:47 forgot to boop a cat. Well played otherwise.
We definitely missed those, thank you! Now Conner has a better excuse for why he lost...
@@caffeineandcardboard1536 Play again, I want to see a proper match!
Boop! The auto-captions on this one was great.
Funny video
Wait......I'm all four? At once!?!?! I feel like it's in phases....😆
🐐
I think these are all fun games to play repeatedly, but as a 'book club' game, I think you need to have a game that is also easy enough to play on autopilot that you can have good conversations while playing them. A lot of your options are pretty intense games where you need to keep a lot of focus on the game, which makes it harder to have a club built around it. I'll definitely put Tichu and a lot of the Knizias on this list, but games like Root, Pax Pamir are a bit too complicated for me to consider a 'book club game'. (And this is coming from a guy who absolutely loves complex games) Coops like Spirit Island and Gloomhaven are also good for book clubs. I've got a 'club' playing Gloomhaven now, and have done so in the past with other games like Descent or Imperial Assault. Rodney's point on setup time is also a huge one, where if you don't have a dedicated table, something like Gloomhaven is a pain, and your point on Dwellings of Eldervale also holds. Glory to Rome as a top one is interesting, and I think that it hits the sweet spot of a deep game, with relatively shallow rules that you can still talk while you are playing. My top 6 (I'm going to do categories here) would probably be something like: 1. Trick taking card game (Euchre, Pinochle) 2. Campaign style game (Gloomhaven, Imperial Assault) 3. Legacy games (Pandemic Legacy, Seafall, Risk Legacy....these are also great but limited in length a bit) 4. Interactive trading game with lots of players (Chinatown, Sidereal Confluence....this would be higher but these also tend to be a bit heavy on rules) 5. Simple games with decent replayability through gigantic decks of cards (Wingspan, Glory to Rome, Dominion, other deck builders) 6. More complicated games that you want to really experience the depth of (Terra Mystica, Kanban, 1830...though I think these are less 'book club' games and more '<GAME> club' games)
Jake I’ve seen you take the long way to mention Seafall before but this is a whole new level.
Hah, I was wondering if you'd catch that :)
Agreed
This is a fun idea for a list! The first one that came to mind for me is Dune (2019). The game is so crazy and bombastic, but has a ton of depth to explore, mainly in a huge variety of different player interactions because of the unique faction abilities. The hard part is that the game can take several hours and you really want a full complement of 6 players, so finding a regular group and time is difficult. Hansa Teutonica would make my list as well, as would Inis.
Whoaaaaa Inis definitely slipped our minds. We love that game. Also I’ve had about 3/4 of a play of Dune but I for sure see it. We saw an alliance between Harkonens and Atriedes and I want that chaos in my life.
This was a fun list! Knizia's games, and especially the tile laying ones, are so good for this that I'd have to throw a secret top 6 Knizia games into my list. I'd think Tigris & Euphrates, Yellow & Yangtze, Babylonia, Blue Lagoon, Through the Desert would all be games vying for a spot on my list. Hansa, Terraforming Mars, Terra Mystica, Crokinole, Pax Pamir, Root, Scout or The Crew: MDS, would be top contenders for me as well. Surprised Nemesis didn't make an appearance for Rodney, although player elimination and the length might spoil the book-clubiness of it a bit.
Nemesis would be my vote for “social deduction games.” But I actually think social deduction games don’t lend themselves to this.
@@crain1rr That makes sense. I don't think any would make my list, Avalon would be the closest, but I know there are a lot of die-hard Blood on the Clocktower players where it's the main/only game they play. Although there is some fuzziness between lifestyle games and book club games in my mind.
Canadian Geese are the devil.
I really like both games. I think pretty quickly this will be the one i like more.
