Is Ndutu the Best Place in the World for Wildlife Photography?
There are many iconic places all around the world for wildlife photography. But the southern Serengeti region of Ndutu is a hidden gem that is arguably the best for wildlife photography. The environment here is home to some of the most famous African animals, including some of the more rare and lesser seen ones on safari. Lions, cheetahs, and yes thousands of migrating wildebeest, are just some of the resident species that I was abate to photograph here in Ndutu. After 3 weeks in East Africa on safari, Ndutu truly was the grand finale that I had been hoping for.
Check out this vlog where I photograph all these amazing animals that you can see best in Ndutu!
Thanks for watching, and be sure ...

    Hi, needless to say, your photographs are exceptional. If you don't mind, I have a question. I am going to Rwanda next month and I am not a professional (I use Gopro and Micro Four Thirds Cameras), so I would like to carry as little equipment as possible. What focal length range or prime lense do you think would be most suitable to shoot the gorillas? Thank you in advance.

    • @ScrimshawPhotography
      @ScrimshawPhotography День назад

      @@catalinpastiu6740 thank you so much! I shoot full frame, and solely used a 70-200mm f2.8 which I feel like is THE gorilla lens. The focal length is right in that sweet spot where you can capture environmental shots or portraits depending on where the gorillas are around you. And in dense jungle you need the ability to shoot lowlight, though the two groups that I happened to get were out in the open. For a Micro 4/3 system, I’d say if you can get anywhere between 25-100mm you’ll be set. And I’d highly suggest a zoom over a prime because you just don’t know what distance you’ll be working with given where you find your designated gorilla group, so flexibility is really important. Especially if they’re on the move like my first group was. Hope that helps!

Was a carcass as well at 200 yards which helped. Did you meet any of those on the wolf project? Wolf cars and vans. Jeremy and others. We did and they were very helpful. Thanks for the video. Great video and song choices. Good flow. Hopefully longer lense and better luck next time.

      Thanks! I stayed in Gardiner which was about an hour drive from Lamar Valley. There are plenty of hotels and lodges in town that make it very popular for visitors trying to stay up north. Though to be honest Silver Gate and Cooke City are much closer to Lamar Valley and would be a better choice if your sole focus is just wolf watching in the valley. The downside is that you would totally miss out on the other wolf packs that might be seen along the northern range in the morning, though I’ll admit I have yet to ever see them as more than a dot on the horizon. Either way you have to be prepared for long days and plenty of driving!

    Yellowstone is not an incredibly difficult place to photograph wildlife. It's one of the easiest places in the world to photograph wildlife.

    • @ScrimshawPhotography
      @ScrimshawPhotography 5 месяцев назад

      I’d certainly make an argument against that. It’s the best place to photograph North American wildlife for sure, but the limited road network and safety rules about how close you can get to wildlife (and rightly so) make it very difficult to get good light/composition. That doesn’t mean that you can’t get good photos, just that you have to work much harder for them and get much more lucky compared to over wildlife destinations.

    • @alansach8437
      @alansach8437 Месяц назад

      Yellowstone USED to be a fantastic place to photograph wildlife, and still CAN be, but good opportunities are few and far between due in large part to the huge crowds and also, in part, the policies of the Park Service. If your photo interests begin and end with bison, it's great. Wildlife "jams" can make it very difficult to photograph because any effort to maintain a safe and legal distance will be met with dozens of people between you and the animal. Maneuvering for a better angle becomes impossible. You may get some "snapshots", but getting that prize winning shot becomes extremely difficult. The Park Service has developed a short tolerance, and just as often as not they will crackershell animals like bears and wolves away from the roads, even when they are far more than 100 yards away (the legal limit). Ethical photographers very quickly get a "bad taste in their mouth" when trying to photograph in such conditions. Ask just about any photographer in the Park and you will be told that animals in general, for whatever reason, are not as visible as years past. This may be due to ever increasing people, many of whom do not know how to act around wildlife, being loud and obnoxious; and ever increasing traffic that makes road crossing hazardess at minimum and impossible at times. Lines of humanity will completely prevent it, and even rangers have trouble trying to "make a hole" for them to cross. It's just easier for animals to avoid the roads, or any area frequented by people, altogether. Some rangers (and some are great) seem to have a low tolerance for photographers, and will sometimes make them "move on" even when they are doing everything right. Not an "easy" place to photograph wildlife at all. Snapshots, maybe. But ethical, and publishable, wildlife photography, no.

      And this is a BIG reason things have gone "wrong" in these parks. Conversations like this used to take place in the park, between photographers camping next to each other, or shooting together. Now they take place on social media, where millions read them! Soon, areas like this are overrun with hoardes of people, and the bears no longer use them. This is what happens. No one cares as long as they got THEIR picture!
