What program is this you are using?
When the first pick and roll happens, is the 5 blasting to the top at the same time or is there time to wait a second or two?
@@Dlux2561 it should be almost immediately after the 4 cuts up. The point would be to open the lane up for the 3 to dribble down it, or open the lane up for the rolling 4.
This is FANTASTIC!
Coach, what software do you use to model that?

Coach, do you have anything that you use that works well against to break the 1-2-2 3/4 court press?
Hey thanks for the question. I generally use the same breaker to break any zone press. You can find it in my videos. It is called “how to break any full court zone press.” But I use it against 3/4 court press as well. I hope that helps!

Coach.. what is terminology you use for calling your plays? Thanks
I have to change my play names periodically since I'll play against the same coaches throughout a season. Is that what you are asking?
How did this play fair against the 1-2-2 coach ?
We don't see this zone often, but when we do and we run this play, I would say we get a good look out of it 30-40% of the time.
@@CoachMarcHensleythank you sir. What’s your best set vs 1-2-2 in your experiences?
@@zbw8785 I run 2 different sets against that zone. I have videos explaining them as well. One is called X and the other is called Switch. Personally, I feel like the X offense has worked better for my level.

Yooo the house is haunted

How do you instruct players to deal with off ball cutters into the lane or pack line area? Jam them and front them anytime they’re in the pack line? Trail until edge of pack line?
Yes to that. We always front in the paint, knowing there is help behind. And if your player cuts through the lane, I have my guys stay with them until they exit the lane. Then, my guys stay in the pack line even if their player exits back to the perimeter.
This is beautiful thx
Thanks for the compliment. Glad you enjoyed it!
What do you call this coach
I call it slide because of the 3 offensive players all sliding in the same direction. However you can call it whatever you want depending on the names of other set plays you run!
Coach Marc, quick question for you. Our team doesn't have many strong ball handlers. Most teams put a defender just on the other side of the half court line who plays tough defense on our PG causing turnovers and/or bad passes. So we often can't even get into our half court offense. Do you have any suggestions on how we can combat that? Thanks!
Great question coach. I use 3 different techniques depending on my guys strengths and knowledge. 1. Just have a big run "interference" down the court. As long as.they don't run into the defender, this is not a foul. 2. Have a guy set a ball screen at half court. 3. Run a dribble handoff right before half court to give some misdirection and run the ball in the opposite direction. I hope this helps!
@@CoachMarcHensley Thanks Coach Marc! Those are some good ideas that we will try. How about having two of my guys come down the court at the same time and stay about even with each other but some distance apart. Have the kid with the ball get the chaser commit to guarding him and then pass it over to the other guy? Do you see any issues with that?
@@davidaglio8829 are they man pressing or is it a zone? If it is a zone and there is only 1 guy chasing your two guys, the yes! If it’s man, I’m not sure if that will do much to help.
@@CoachMarcHensley In our league, we are required to play zone for 3 quarters and man to man for 1. They usually set up in a 1-3-1 zone defense and the top guy comes up to pressure the PG.
@@davidaglio8829 that makes sense. Then yes I would definitely encourage 2 or 3 guys staying back to bring the ball up. Then keep another ahead of the ball in the middle. Keep reversing the ball until you get a lane to move it up.
I appreciate your efforts sir Coach Steve from FCBC in Douala
Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
How many BLOB plays do you run? What level are you Coaching? Roughly how many times per game do you run a BLOB play?
I usually have 4 plays that I run at a time. I coach high school freshman boys. Usually per game, I would say I get anywhere between 4 and 8 in Offensive inbounds a game? Just a rough estimate. Thanks for the questions!
Would this be a good offense to run for a 5th-6th grade rec team? We've got several kids who haven't played on a team before with limited shooting range and it seems like this might be a better offense to run than that 5 out motion offense. Your thoughts please.
Hey David, great question. A lot of kids on my teams come in without playing organized ball before and I run this most years. But there is a catch, you need someone who can play that 5 spot well. In general, most of my offense runs through that player. For reference, check out my options for the 5 video. They just need to have decent size and good basketball IQ. If you have one of those, then I would say yes.
@@CoachMarcHensley Thanks for your reply. In our league, the kids have to play zone defense for three quarters. But it sounds like we shouldn't run this type of offense against a zone. Why is that?
@@davidaglio8829 you can certainly run a 4 out against a zone. However, this particular series relies on a lot of perimeter screens and back door cuts, which don't do much to get players open against zones.
Do you have any great drills for youth to 1. Strong with he ball 2. Look for the back door cutter. 3. Make the back door pass on time. I am finally getting my 4th grade girls to actually read the defence and back door cut but passer is either not looking or taking too long to make the pass.
Great question. I dunno about drills to fix that in general. But just continue to preach patience with the ball. I tell my players after they receive a pass, the first thing they should be looking for is to hit a cutter. Unless of course they have a wide open driving lane. But you can do drills in practice where you (a coach) can defend the cutter. Sometimes defend well, and sometimes not, and have the passer read the passing lane to see if it's open.
and reason you always have your point guard start on the left side of the court?
It's probably just how I have the videos set up. We can start on either side of the court. However I do like to have the ball start on the side, instead of the top. It creates a little more room on one side of the court.
Hey Coach. Love the videos. What level do you coach?
Hey Mark, I coach freshman boys I'm high school.
Hi coach, can this work against a zone?
The 4 out, 1 in concept can absolutely work against most zones. This particular video on away screens however would not do much against a zone defense. I do have some videos on how to beat specific zones. Feel free to check those out as well!

Can this play be ran against zone or just man
On ball screens typically don’t fare as well against zones because zones are already prepared to switch whenever the player enters their “zone.” They work great against man because even if they are well defended, you can cause switches, which will create mismatches. So, while on ball screens do have their place against zones, they don’t do as well as they do against man.
Hi Coach, great videos! I have run 1-3-1 for many years but find it requires very specific personnel (specifically the top and bottom defender). My current team usually has 2 "bigs" and 3 guards on the floor most times and have found it difficult to find a position for the 2nd "big". We've been going with the 3-2 lately and have found it successful. It seems easier to run with our personnel and less tiring (we run zone for about 60% of the game, M2M the rest of the time). What are your thoughts on which zone defense you prefer and in practice which are you using more often (1-3-1, 3-2, 2-3)? What level are you coaching (I am senior girls HS). Thanks!
Thanks for the question! I coach high school boys at the freshmen level. Of course, the best zone for a team to run depends on their personnel. If I had my pick with the perfect players, I love the 131. However, you are right in that you need very specific players to run the top and bottom of it. I've only used it a few years when I had the right kids. Otherwise, I do like the 122 (pretty much the same as 32) because it's a great pressure defense. My least favorite is the 23, although it's the easiest to teach and run properly, and you don't really need any specific skillset to play it. I would also agree that with the team you are describing, I would avoid the 131 this year. The 32 sounds like a great option!
@@CoachMarcHensley This is very helpful! We have an interesting team this year - 4 good bigs and many skilled but undersized guards. I often have 2 bigs on the floor but sometimes b/c of foul trouble, injuries I only have 1. I may try 3-2 when we have 2 bigs and 1-3-1 when we have 1 big. Thank you for all of your help. Your videos are concise and clear.
@@FL-cw4pk that’s a great plan. As long as you have enough practice time to work on both thoroughly. It’s better to be really good at 1 Defense than just decent at multiple, in my opinion. But if you have the time to work on both, then the more looks you can throw at opponent’s offenses, the better!
Who should #3 be?
It's really up to you how to best place your players. Here is how I set my lineup. 1 - best handler 2 - best shooter 5 - best "big" 3 and 4 - next 2 guys, bigger player I put at 4, smaller at 3. Hope that helps!
@@CoachMarcHensley thanks coach, appreciate it.
What if the passer is already basket cutting from progression one? Once you introduce this progression is almost looks like dribble drive. Love the videos and progressions but would love to see what happens if the drive comes after the basket cut.
Great thought. I always teach my kids that priority number 1 is the cutter. So whoever receives the ball must watch to see if a cutter is open before they drive. If the passer decides not to cut, then the receiver can drive off the pass.
Thank you
You’re welcome! I’m glad you enjoyed the video.

That is a solid pregame for a young team.
It works perfectly for a senior team. Especially Euro style basketball
How do you defend on-ball screens?
Hey Ray, great question. We do not switch on any ball screens. Switching only creates mismatches, and we want to avoid that. We also will not ask the player who is guarding the screener to provide help either. We know there will always be extra help inside the pack line. The help will come from somewhere in the pack line, and if the ball gets passed back out, we close out hard on the new ball carrier. I hope that helps!
@South Georgia Storm yes we don't switch at all. And I tell my players to go under every ball screen. That being said, I have my player who is guarding the screener just pause momentarily to contest amy outside shot before leaving to guard his man again. That half second is usually enough time for the original defender to recover and at least get around the screen.
@@CoachMarcHensley would you happen to have a model of that?
How did this work for you in your tournament?
Appreciate the clear and simplified explanation of this offense. Do you think this offense is better against a zone D or man to man D?
Thanks for the comment and question! This is definitely better against man defenses as it utilizes screens and backdoor cuts against overplaying defenses. It can be adapted to use against certain zones, but I usually don't run it against any zone.
@@CoachMarcHensley What do you run against zone?
@@joshuabrewster115 hey Joshua, what kind of zone are you asking about? I run different things against different zones.
@@CoachMarcHensleyWhat would you recommend against a 2-3 zone? This looks like it would work against a 2-3 zone based on the defender positions. I'm looking to implement a high post offense, 4-out.
@NextGenAvatar can it work against a 23? Yes. However I usually don't run it. I have a video on what I run against a 23 as well. It's a motion offense and gets a ton of good looks. Feel free to check it out.
Coach, I tried running this a few years back with our Girls Varsity team. However, the problem I kept running into was that when we used the away screens the lane would get clogged because the wing's defender (when opposite slot had the ball) was two passes away and had a foot in the lane. So when we went to screen her, there was not much room to curl around because the 5's defender was also in the lane. Any suggestions on how to fix this? Maybe a pin down instead of a curl? Or something involving the 5? Appreciate the help.
Hey Michael, good question. I have definitely seen other teams do that on defense. The best way to combat it is with outside shooting! Instead of curling around the screen, you can run a pin down and get a good look at a 3. Of course, we are not always blessed with good shooters. Another option would be instead of away screen at the top, run a down screen for the 5 to get her the ball at the top. Then have that screener set another back door screen on another player. I hope that helps!
I know most people disagree w/ zone defenses before high school. But if I was going to run this against teams that don’t attack corners, and they only shoot from the paint & narrow wings, do you have a simplified version of this for 12-15 year olds ?
Hey Isaiah, if your opponents don't attack the corners, they will have no chance against this defense if you run it correctly. However, if you don't feel as though your players can do these rotations, you can simplify it by not having the wings rotate down to the blocks at all. I wouldn't suggest this though. If they can't run this the way it should be ran, I would suggest another zone, possible a 3-2 or a 1-2-2.
Hey coach, On some of your videos, you place players on the wings. In this video, you have players in the corners. Should players be on the wings or in the corners? Thanks!
Romondo, thanks for the question. Really, I think it’s preference to your teams attributes. If you got good corner shooters, then having players near the corners will help spread the floor even more. However, I am not usually blessed with many of those. So, I usually keep my players a little higher. The only time I will have a player in a corner is when the ball is at the near wing, or on any drive to the hoop for a kick out. I hope that answers your question!
This is brilliant!
How would this change if you’re coaching 11-14 youth girls & the offense never has players in the corner ? And always has a 4 & 5 at the blocks/low post ?
Isaiah, thanks for the question. Without actually seeing what offense they are running, I can’t give you a definitive answer. However, I would think that nothing would change except how the wings close out to the slots. They can go straight instead of banana curl. Otherwise I would think that would be a horrible offense to run against a 1-3-1. The 1-3-1 offense is only really vulnerable in the corners, so if the offense doesn’t put people there, they are going to struggle getting shots off. However if the 1-3-1 isn’t working for you against this for whatever reason, I would try switching to a 1-2-2 zone against that offense. I hope this helps!
@@CoachMarcHensley do you have a website or any other resources that I can utilize ? I am LOVING your content. I’m definitely running your 4 out 1 in offense next season. Your series on that, with all the variations are absolutely incredible.
