Why would this be a metaphor? The context tells us nothing about metaphor, it is simply the account of how God created everything and the fall of man... Knowing that the Bible is inerrant, we must shape science to what the Bible says (as in this context it is something literal).

I recommend a young’s literal translation for one to check during study. It’s certainly not an “everyday” translation but it’s the first of several I refer to.
