2022 WRX - Shine Armor Review #shinearmor #wrx #subaru
You don't seem to understand why they went to a thinner oil. They make the clearances between the bearings and the oil ports in the engine smaller. Oil is between 30 and 40% of your engine's Cooling because the oil touches things that the water in your cooling system cannot. And in order for the oil to cool your engine parts correctly then transfer that heat to your cooling system correctly it has to have a certain gallons per minute flow. So when you slow that flow down by putting a thicker oil in you're not only making your engine parts run hotter, but you're making the oil run hotter which breaks it down quicker. And today's engines already run hotter so you're adding to the problem of heat. Then you have how the Rings are broke in. You can look at the mating surface of a piston ring and if you take a magnifying glass you will see that it's not a flat surface. This is because the ring flexes up and down as the Piston moves up and down. And it's important for the ring to ride right on the edge in order to get the best seal where it makes against the cylinder. When you change viscosity what can happen is that the ring that was broken on the lighter viscosity, can lose some of its ceiling power and therefore all consumption can start. Oil can work its way up into the cylinder on the intake stroke when the combustion chamber is under a vacuum while it sucks in the air fuel mix. And if you have variable valve timing, you can really cause a problem changing viscosity. Because the VVT system depends on constant viscosity of the oil. Put a thicker oil in there and the valve start opening sooner, and close later than what they're supposed to. This makes the engine lose power and fuel economy. So you're not helping your engine because the engine was built around the viscosity of the oil and it depends upon that viscosity. It's not like they're taking the motor from the 1970s and sticking this thin oil in it because it wouldn't work. Also if you happen to have hydraulic lifters in your valve train the thicker oil will stiffen them up and make your valve timing off and that can do a bunch of stuff even burn a valve. So you're giving advice on something that you don't know the applications of. And some engines this wouldn't be a problem. And down south where it's much hotter this might not be a problem but when you go up and viscosity on both numbers, doesn't matter about the climate. They do make a 5-20 oil, that would have been okay in a warmer climate but when you change that top number you're changing the viscosity at operating temperatures. Now if your car had more than 50,000 miles then you possibly could get by with a thicker oil because the clearances and everything would have opened up from wear. Here's the other thing you do not understand. The differences between synthetic oil and petroleum oil. Petroleum oil has many different size molecules in it. So it's not as good as keeping metal parts from touching. Synthetic oil is made from a uniform molecule and has nothing to do with petroleum oil. In fact when you get down to those really thin viscosities, you won't find petroleum oil in the product because petroleum oil is incapable of becoming that thin without also becoming combustible. And if you think 0-20 it's thin, they now have a 0-8 oil that's used in hybrids from what I hear. Also if they thought they were damaging an engine with the thin oil there is an easy remedy. You make all the bear and surfaces 5 to 10% wider and that thinner oil acts like a thicker oil because there's more oil surface for the oil to keep the engine parts from touching. This is why in diesel engines the connecting rod bearings are almost twice as wide is what you will find in a gasoline engine. That's to take the extra load. So the old technology that says thicker is better, no longer applies. Things are machined to accept these thinner oils, so when you start adding thicker oils you are asking for problems. But if you have to go up to a thicker oil I would only jump one weight up and that's it. Because if you would a 20w50 in that engine, you blow it up and that's no joke. And if you put 20-50 in a VVT engine you wouldn't make it out of the driveway. That's because the high pressure would hold the valves open and they wouldn't close and you would lose all compression in every cylinder. Same thing goes for hydraulic lifters in a new engine. They bleed off holes in the side of the lifters are made smaller to accommodate the thinner oil. So when you put a thicker oil, the oil doesn't bleed off like it should and the valve stay open longer than they should.
wow hell of a response. at any rate Subaru recommends this weight in every other country expect USA.... so yea ill stick with what they say ty though
My motor was noisy with that Pennzoil trash. Amsoil is the only thing i will buy now.
What are you doing man? Top climate scientists told us 30 years ago we only had 12 years left before global warming kills us all.
Change the oil every 3 thousand miles you will never have problems good synthetic oil with turbo
Same here, dude! I'd rather sacrifice a couple or three mpg, in order to protect my engine!
@Funkydood no loss in mpg since change 🙂 if it is its so small I can’t tell
From a well known/respected Subaru tuner: “When people start bringing up engines being designed for certain [lower] viscosity oils, the WRX and STI owners manuals from 2002 to 2010, Subaru recommended running 10W-40, 20W-40, and 20W-50 in hot climates or when running the cars in abusive environments, ie racing. In 2011 all references to specific higher viscosity oils were gone-do you know what changed January 1, 2011? That’s when the first EPA lower viscosity oil law went into effect. So now we’re down to 0W-20 oil and next recommendations are going to go down to 0W-16 oil and then 0W-08 oil. It’s because of fuel economy and fewer OCI’s=less oil waste. Thinner oil equals a nominal .5% miles per gallon. And if you are mandating millions of people to change your oil every 10,000 miles instead of every 3000 miles that’s billions of gallons of less waste oil to deal with-apply those same numbers to a 0.5% nominal increase in miles per gallon… that’s where we are”
Bingo. Also in other countries than here in the states the oil is higher viscosity
@ Absolutely yes! Also, a big shout out to Hollywood Mechanic and his video “You’re using the wrong oil, w/receipts” from about a year ago. Good info there too, you might like it.
Never heard of it. I’ll have to check it out
Toyota is a part owner of Subaru, so it makes sense they would use some common connectors.
And again another doofus talking about oil viscosity without talking about pressure YOU MUST KNOW THE PRESSURE IF YOU ARE GOING TO FIDDLE FART AROUND WITH VISCOSITY
@@mark-ui8lu ah yes another doofus who can read that the manufacturer recommends this oil 🤣
You aren’t making sense soy boy…the mfg says 0w-20…have you datalogged your oil pressure? I’m so sick of people talking about viscosity without knowing the pressure..you want the thinnest oil that still gives you adequate pressure..but since you are in the cave man camp of me think thicker is better I’ll leave you to it
@mark-ui8lu might want to research a bit more before you open your mouth bad mouthing people. In every other country but America it’s the manufacture recommendation…. Welcome to epa standards ;) have yourself a good day good sir
You may want to research oil pressure vs viscosity You are trying to compare euro oils and what people across the pond are doing. You still must know the presssure. Otherwise you are blindly making changes…it’s completely irrelevant what the chumps in the UK are doing..by your logic if they were jumping off a bridge you would also
@mark-ui8lu i think ill trust Subaru when they explicitly place it in the manual. Th aka for your input though.
This dude thinks the first number has anything to do with hot temps..news flash bud..run 0w-30 and get the best of both worlds..
Did you make a video of you downloading The D Man tune to your car access port?
I didn’t.
MISS MY 3 HATCHS..HAD A 2011 GUNMETAL GREY WRX, 2012 BLACK STI AND WHITE 2014 STI..I DONT REALLY LIKE HOW THIS GEN LOOKS WITH THE WAGON ON THE BACK.. DIMENSIONS JUST SEEM OFF BUT MAYBE IF I SAW A MODIFIED ONE ID CHANGE MY MIND. IVE GOT A 23 CBS VB AND I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT.BEST WRX YET. ONCE I DO THE STI TRANS/DIFFS/DCCD IT WILL BE THE ULTIMATE STI SUBARU SHOULD HAVE MADE TBH.
I just subbed. Please go into sound deadening material and how to fix the rattle on my door panels for the 2022 wrx. Thanks ahead of time my dude.
@@frusignu2011 can do. I happen to have a new roll of deadener in my living room 😉. Have to wait for warmer weather though. Cant apply it when it’s freezing out.
@@frusignu2011 and ty for the sub man
Harmon Kardon sounds good. The door panels can't handle it really.
HK is slightly better than base. The panels correct stock have no deadener. Add a smidge and solve all issues
I bought a brand new 2017 Subaru Impreza base model with the 2.0L engine and cvt transmission... Changed oil every 5k miles with 0w20. I was on the freeway with a posted speed limit of 75mph.... car in front of me was doing 55mph so I floored it.... got it up to 105mph.... as soon as I let off of the gas I heard a loud "pop" sound and then every time I hit the gas I heard rod knock. The car had 53k miles on it. Maybe I should have been using 5w30. "I don't drive like that anymore." :)
I highly doubt that from 0-5w would have helped in that situation. It’s for cold start and temp reasons. That sucks though but I bet it was just some random shit that happened. Bummer man
Why not use 0w-30 motor oil?
Good question. It might be warrantee issues.
@@kenweller2032 better than 5w-30 for replacing 0w-20 oil
Big help. Thanks!🙏
Glad it helped
I agree, 5W30 is better then 0W20. The thinner oil only improves gas mileage that sells more cars.
Pennzoil Platinum and ultra platinum 5w30 cold flow is -48 degrees. That's as good as and in some cases a lower cold flow rate than some 0w engine oils. It's due to the natural gas ( GTL Technology ) as it's base stock. It's a WIN, WIN.
i use pennzoil too deborah
I have a 2024 Sonata MPI / GDI 2.5L and I too switched to 5W-30 up from 0W-20. The engine runs quieter and smoother. This same engine in other markets use 5W-30. We're forced to use the thinner oil due to EPA CAFE rules. Not a law but a rule.
Thank goodness! Those thinner oil recommendations are a joke
"It's tiny just two inches", my gf says that's a good size actually
Man, thats not gonna last long. Try Jescar Powerlock sealant. Its better than any wax.

@@christophermiehl7135 not needed. I have to be safe and tell you to always disconnect battery …. But real world…. It’s not needed man

I was told a 0w oil is always synthetic,0w-30 is better than 5w-30
Wrx is a sweetie ride.
if u check the VI index on the European oils its better than any North American oil and yes Castrol has Euro 5w30 really good stuff VI index is important and the HT HS ratings as well the VI index has a thicker oil film on 0w30 European oil vs that American 5w30 so in reality the 0w30 euro oil protects better than North American 5w30
The Castrol 0w30 Euro oil has better protection than that 5w30 penzoil
how do you figure?
@@cantwealljustgetalong2 has a higher VI index the euro better oil film strength
I made a video on this I don't use this crap 0w20....I actually switched to Castrol European oil 0w30 has a higher VI index than any American oil use the european oil its even better than that penzoil and its SL rating which has more zinc its even better protection
How did the lip hold up? I just installed mine last night. Added an extra few screws to make it sturdier. Hope it doesn't come off lol
its been a year and a half and its still holding on perfect. still using supplied screws and nothing more. I have hit a curb or two by accident and obviously scuffs but hasnt come loose.
Wow! That's great to hear. Today is the first day driving with the lip on and I was skeptical lol. 😅
@@Flatline_WRXI did add some extra screws where I felt it was a weak point. The front center of the lip and the sides.
@jsd1v2 to start if you added extra screws you should be set. If I was to do it again not only would I add a couple extra like you did. It is be inclined to even add 3m double back tape along the whole thing honestly. I had said to myself if it ever come off that’s what I was going to do ….
