    50:52 that image with the faring removed shows how unprotected the driver was from certain accidents, the faring placed on top was fairly strong but could take a huge collision. Just looks so vulnerable sitting there.

    A heart-breaking time in F1. I'm old enough to remember watching the cigar-tubes of the early 60's - beautiful cars, but death traps. Things are safer now, but F1 has become entertainment, show and money over sport.

    If anyone ever has any doubts about the safety of F1 now as compared to the past look no further than Romain Grosjean's crash at Bahrain 2020. I'm sure most people have seen it by now. His car hit a metal guardrail at well over 100 mph and actually cramming itself between the upper and lower pieces. It burst into flames immediately (which already is a rarity in modern F1), but every time he tried to climb out something was blocking him (the upper railing) he said he tried a couple of different angles but couldn't fit and just sat there coming to the realization that this was the end, before finally finding a way to maneuver his way out all while still fully engulfed in flames. The cameras shooting the scene actually showed him through the fire trying to get out. Yet finally all of the sudden all you saw was the driver standing up and stepping out of the car and out of the flames. What would have been a no doubt deadly crash years ago now resulted in some burns to his hands and feet, not that they weren't bad or anything but the fact they not only didn't kill him they didn't even end his racing career. Those racing suits are remarkable. Between that and the attributes of carbon fiber what once would have been an assured death is now something that can be walked away from, well those 2 things as well as the hans device which stopped the thing that originally was worn for safety (the helmet) from being the reason for many of the driver deaths as the sudden impact combined with the heavy helmet with not neck supports meant they were more likely to break there necks with the helmet than without. The video of him rising up out of the fire and jumping over the railing makes him look like a badass, if that were me i would have at least pictures of it framed on my wall.

    Because everyone knows it's not how fast a car is, it's how it looks that matters.. I wonder what Hamilton thinks about the halo now. Since without it he would have been killed when Max Verstappen's car landed on Hamiltons car and would have broken his neck landing on his head. It's funny how our minds work with time passing, now looking at an F1 car before the halo it looks really strange

  • @jamesrichardson381
    @jamesrichardson381 5 дней назад

    It absolutely astonishes me that it took so long for F1 to realize not supporting the drivers neck was dangerous. The truth is at that time in a big impact you actually would be far better off not wearing a helmet. I realize that sounds weird but the odds of flipping an f1 car are much slimmer than an impact with a wall or car. The added weight of the helmet actually snaps your neck far easier. The hans device has been a lifesaver in racing and that combined with the newer cars encircling the helmet closely deaths have gone way down. I'm very surprised that F1 hasn't done away with the standing start and adopted the rolling start like used in Nascar. Since it doesn't really change anything race wise to do it that way and it's much safer. To have them start from a stand still in a line all you need is one driver to stall or have an issue and a collision is inevitable just like when driving on regular roads if someone is stopped in front the first few cars may see it in time but the reaction time for each car after that gets less and less until finally someone sees it to late to react. Speaking of Nascar I find it very interesting that those 2 dangerous turns they changed to make it safer looked a lot like the turns at most oval tracks in nascar that some people like to put the sport down for. The fact that for the most part they only turn one direction in nascar is with good reason, it gives the spectators a much better show. They can see pretty much the entire track at all times and see all of the racing. Unlike at road courses where they see cars fly by and then have to wait another couple minutes for them to come back around and are lucky if there is a giant screen to watch.

    I was 7 years old when i watched the accident at Monza. When Ronnie died all of the F1 hype died in Sweden, we had some uppspring with Stefan "Lillövis" Johansson. But it was never to be the same as when Ronnie was driving. In Sweden we had the BIG 3. Ingemar Stenmark Björn Borg Ronnie Peterson. Like Mario said, "He should not die from his injurys, he should sit here with me" The F1 in the -70'th was a mad and they drove flying widowmakers.

    The way Indy car does the sides of the car up to the rear wheel is so much smarter than how F1 does it. In F1 you constantly see guys side by side racing where one of the cars front and back wheels straddle another cars wheel where when one changes speed it brings the fast spinning tires together usually shooting one of the cars up into the air. The way Indy does it is smart.. I like F1 more now than I used to, mainly because of Netflix but it still seems crazy to me that anyone would design cars with arguably the most important part of the car, the wheels, sticking out. Something as vital to a race cars success as wheels and tires being in such a vulnerable spot is odd if you think about it. considering it's the only part of the car that actually comes in contact with the track.

  • @jamesrichardson381
    @jamesrichardson381 8 дней назад

    That Grosjean wreck was insane. Although I'm quite certain it took a lot longer than 28 seconds for him to escape the car. Pinned beneath the guard rail every way he tried to stand up he was blocked and had to sit back down and try another angle. I think it was almost 2 minutes before he finally got out. It is haunting enough seeing the footage of him clearly struggling while fully engulfed in flames but had he died no one would have ever forgotten it.

    Everything in this video was a terrifying watch, shows how little thought went into safety back then even with the Arnoux vs Villenueve fight there is no barriers anywhere if a driver went offline they are flying of the hill on that part of the track, that Gilles clip is haunting.
