Manny, that look at the end of the first run of the video was priceless, just saying. This is to her record label and the executives who f'd her. Ren helped her get out of the contract and go independent. She has a distribution agreement vs. a label agreement. Very different. She's got over 2M monthly listeners on Spotify so there's that.

There are so many amazing things about Ren the artist.. but a awesome side effect is he connects with multiple artists who are also incredible artists on their own.. Ren is a gift that keeps on giving.. through him i have found, Chinchilla, Sam Tompkins, Asaf Avidian, the big push and im sure im forgetting someone.. and there are probably more that i just haven't discovered yet... When i watch this one.. i just become so jealous of the audience.. i mean.. can you imagine.. you're out and about.. shopping or what have you.. and you wonder onto this scene... What? Sam Tompkins - Lose It All

In case nobody else has chimed in, purgatory in the theological rather than popular sense is a place where people who are ultimately going to be able to get into heaven but who still haven't adequately atoned for their sins finish the atonement. The process is about purgation - from the Latin purgatorius meaning purifying, from the verb purgare, to purge, purify, cleanse. So if you die not having made reparation for a venial sin, or you confess on your deathbed but don't have time to do penance before you die, your time in purgatory cleanses you, after which you can join the company of heaven. So it is def not a place between life and death. You have to die to go to purgatory (even if the EMTs are able to bring you back, as in Ren's case). Now i'm not claiming they are trying to stick to the finer theological points with this, which is fine :) This isn't catechism class :) but i say all this and risk sounding pedantic because i think there's a chance that the theological meaning has resonance here. I'm not trying to be a Catholic apologist here - i'm pretty agnostic on the matter of what *exactly* happens after death and in what order - but the concept of purgatory opens up space for things like the person who messed up but had so many things stacked against them that they hardly had a chance before they made such a bad mistake that it altered the course of their life forever. Or the virtuous pagans. Or a number of other scenarios that seem to warrant a little more nuance than just "saved or damned." So the video paints it as a space where people get there not necessarily realizing what's up, but the other people there can clue them in, and i really like the idea that here's a grungy bar in which people are learning what they need to learn to let go of the shit that contaminated them in life, and they're learning it from other sinners. And once they've figured the shit out, they can leave it and the bar behind and go to heaven. I think the idea can make human suffering make a little more sense, potentially. One messed up person can help another messed up person, maybe, in a space/place where they couldn't have heard it or understood it coming from a church or a deity or an angel. At least not one that looked like one. Maybe one that hangs out in dive bars in disguise, though :)

I'm glad you led with your rationale because i was wondering 😏 Makes perfect sense though. I really like what you're saying about the accountability part, and that isn't something i hear people tackle a lot when reacting to her music (it's easy to step in it big time, to say that in a way that doesn't come across quite right, and you handled it well), but it is definitely a theme in Chinchilla's music. It's one of the reasons why her music is so empowering, imo. I think you'll like Cold Water, if you haven't already reacted to it.

What you call the quiet rage underneath is why i keep coming back to Chinchilla, even the songs that are coming from a place that is just about abject. Because i've been through too much shit to just crumple and succumb to overwhelm and get hijacked by pain. I don't have enough time left to squander any more of it. I have to curate carefully to make sure i am not enabling the part of me that lands on the floor and says "I just can't take any more." But at the heart of every Chinchilla song, you can hear her capacity to get up, lift her chin, square her shoulders, and keep going - even if the lyrics don't go there in the song, the *performance* does. That is the kind of thing i have to curate for. And she is an absolute master of it.

Love love love how new talent like Chinchilla and Ren publish a lot of live audio and one-take video... I don't mind letting the editing suite and mixing talent show their skills but there's something about a clean one take video with natural acoustic audio (or minimally enhanced) that has me immediately more engaged with the performance.

100% understand what you meant about Ren vocal skills. It’s basically perfection already. He can basically do anything he wants with the vocals he has where Chinchilla and Sam are unbelievable but can still somehow keep getting better. Btw Ren/Chichilla busking One Dance/Drunk in Love is a must.
