How to “stand up” a flat footed horse
Просмотров 30 тыс.9 месяцев назад
If you’ve ever had a client ask to stand their horse up more, but said horse has very flat feet and you’re struggling to achieve that upright hoof capsule. Then this video might be for you. Depending on the growth pattern this might be the approach you need to take to achieve the correct alignment throughout the cycle. #asmr #farrier #horse #equestrian #horseshoeing #horses
White line disease resection on a horse hoof
Просмотров 4,5 тыс.9 месяцев назад
There is a variety of reasons infections like this plague horse hooves, the tough part is finding out what those reasons are, the fun part is the hoof wall resection. This dressage pony battles white line disease in this same location on the same foot at least once a year. This void can be created in as short as 6 weeks between shoeings. #farrier #horse #asmr #equestrian #horseshoeing

How to balance horse feet without X-rays
Просмотров 3,4 тыс.9 месяцев назад
How many times have you heard a farrier say “I don’t have X-ray vision” when addressing a horse with difficult feet to balance? Or a horse with very uneven high/low heel syndrome? Here’s a little trick using external markers to help balance both fronts without the use of X-rays. #farrier #horse #equestrian #horses

    As you already know I'm a Fan of your video methodology - having a shoeing plan, explaining what you see to start and what you intend to do about it, and why. So in this case, no mention of the glaring quarter crack left me waiting for some mention. Granted, One can only fix so many flaws at once, and often, the most appropriate fix for one flaw potentially worsens another, but as Farrier's watching Farrier vids, obvious issues left out leaves the Viewer disappointed. Great stuff for non-informed horse Owners, but even a mention of possible future attention, like fullering the lateral branch for more support under the crack, or even rasping a float under it, etc would cover the lack of mention. I do recall you did one vid where you focused on quarter crack treatment...wonder if it was this horse? All that said, your didactic explanations are creating quality vids that are enjoyed and appreciated.

    Can you explain why some shoers attach the shoe with heat? I apologize for my naiveness... Im genuinely interested and appreciate what you do.

    • @thewesternstatesfarrier
      @thewesternstatesfarrier 2 месяца назад

      The shoe isn’t actually applied while hot, it’s cooled before nailing it on. There’s a couple benefits to “hot shoeing”. Ease of shaping is one, and when it is burnt onto the hoof it seals parts of the hoof and will help the hoof maintain its structure in wetter environments.

    nice work, i understand why you set the shoe back so far, i,m not so bold, maybe i will try it.

    • @thewesternstatesfarrier
      @thewesternstatesfarrier 2 месяца назад

      It’s very dependent on the hoof, sometimes feet can handle it and sometimes they can’t. Let the COR decide if you can set it back. Sometimes just picking a larger shoe to add more caudal support is a better way to go.

    Why do you use a hoof knife to pick out the hoof initially? I would think that would wear out your knife too fast.

    • @thewesternstatesfarrier
      @thewesternstatesfarrier 4 месяца назад

      I use the back of my knife as to not dull the cutting edge I am usually only able to use a knife for about 8 months and picking feet with it doesn’t seem to speed that up much.

    • @thewesternstatesfarrier
      @thewesternstatesfarrier 4 месяца назад

      Usually it’s an imbalance in the hoof capsule that causes cracks. In this case this horse has a very asymmetrical bone in his pastern that causes some extreme overloading of the inside aspect of the hoof causing the crack.

    how do you correct low heels? I am thinking perhaps my mare needs shoes but I don't want her feet to depend on the shoe and grow normally

  • @meganpahl3612
    @meganpahl3612 5 месяцев назад

    I would love to send you some pics of my arabian. She has the high/low hoof; however, it is not that exaggerated. Yet, we have some problems going on. Her right front is her low heel. This is causing here to flare between trimmings because now her bars are growing out and towards the toe. Evidentially, she needs to be adjusted weekly because of the extra hoof wall growth. I need to know how to BOTH correct the high low and also how to get here heels in the correct place while encouraging her bars to grow straight and therefore not give her flaring. Is there any way I could send you some pics and get your advice? I cannot afford weekly trimmings at 50 bucks a pop. I may need to do this myself
