Was Getting a Jeep Wrangler a Mistake?
The SCORCH Jeep Wrangler Rubicon Xtreme Recon scouts a path up and over the Southern Sierras while Jonathan Z ponders the good, the bad, and the ugly about this rig now that it has a few thousand miles on it.
It's an honest assessment of the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon's on and off road handling, sound system, cargo capacity, cabin noise, interior, and more in the quest to determine if getting this vehicle was perhaps a huge mistake.

Basic 2-Door Stick Shift Bronco takes on Beefy Wranglers and 4Runners
Просмотров 17 тыс.2 года назад
Difficulty in tracking down a new lead rig for SCORCH, one of Southern California's largest off-road meetup groups, gave us one more chance to take a look at our Bronco vs. Wrangler vs. 4Runner decision. This time the trails are much harder and the only Bronco we could find was a 2-door, stick-shift, non-Sasquatch version. Can this small but mighty Bronco hold its own against a squad of built-u...
Which Rig Should I Get? Wrangler vs Bronco vs 4Runner
Просмотров 82 тыс.2 года назад
SCORCH, one of Southern California's largest and fastest growing off-road meetup groups, needs a new lead rig. We gathered up a Ford Bronco, a Jeep Wrangler, and two Toyota 4Runner owners for a day of off-roading and asked them what they liked, and didn't like, about their rigs.
Not a big fan of the Jeeps they’re uncomfortable to me
We all know the 4runner is the best here.
If you want the unique experience of a very unique maneuverable vehicle that you can pull the top off, fit in tight spaces get the Wrangler, otherwise get the 4-Runner. The Bronco is having a lot of service issues, maybe when they get those eco boost engines figured out, it might be a better deal.
I love toyota as a brand, but I still dont see ANY car do the extreme things a jeep wrangler does. Thats just a fact.... now will a wrangler make 300-500,000 miles? But thats not rhe debate here. The topic of discussion is offroading. And wrangler is simply king for that.
He's worried about the $50k he's sitting on, it has to get him to work on Monday.
My 2019 4runner is the best of all worlds!
Very simple. Buy whichever you like if you are a short term owner and afford to replace vehicle whenever you want. Buy 4runner if you are like me who won't be rockcrawling and careless about new designs and keeps it for more than 10 years as long as it's not totaled.
Have you had any transmission whine at lower gears? I have the XR Rubicon V6 and I noticed a slight whine (sounds like a supercharger almost) occasionally at 1st and 2nd gear, wondering if you or anyone has the same issue. Vehicle is driving fine though
Great! The more off-road options in the US the better.
Same predicament. I had a chance to drive all and ended up choosing Jeep Rubicon. 4Runner looked good but I hated the interior, it felt more like an SUV and lacked some basic features, like a side handle by drivers side, as well as lack of ability to easily add modifications. Bronco I couldn’t figure out, liked the roomy interior and rear tailgate that resembled the Jeep, but again something felt off about some things, like an awkwardly placed handle by the shifter. Jeep, on the other hand is like a Lego set, you a take things off or add things in a breeze.
G wagon for the win
Mo Jeep, Mo problems 😂
Owned 2 Wranglers (JK and JL), 2021 4Runner, and currently have a 2022 Tacoma 4x4 which I love. JL Wrangler highway ride/steering was poor even after extensive steering upgrades, high end shocks, etc. Great offroad. 4Runner bullet proof but dated and dealers have them overpriced right now.. One Florida dealer in Tampa has 100 Broncos on their lot. Broncos are continuing to drop in price due to poor sales. Bronco IMO offers best combination of power, offroad capability, and daily driver. See what the new 4Runner will bring to the table when it comes out later this year. Toyota #1 on long term value and reliability.
Wish the Bronco was more affordable. I ended up with a 4Runner and love it.
I don’t wish it because it doesn’t feel like it should be priced at what it is and that’s how I ended up in my runner.
4Runner, I want something that’s reliable
is it a 3.6v6 or i4
Nice videos guys , I hope more videos coming out
Whatever your choice is, remember, the best one out there is the one you own.
'17 SR5 w magnussen supercharger on 34's w 3" bilstein 6112 (HD option 650springs) /2.5" rr lift, no front sway rides awesome w sway deleted and handles FINE on highway. Wife drives it 80% no swaybar makes 4R RIDE so much nicer on pavement where it lives 97% of time. Regear to 4:56 is next w ARB locker out back since Im on heavier/taller 34's. The 4.0L / 5AT is not gonna break on you or throw a CEL. All bugs worked out. With 6psi boost its 350hp runs in the 13's quarter mile, gets 12.9mpg everywhere lol. We rented a 4 cycl turbo hurricane Wrangler out of town loved how it drove (except the SA steering) that lil 300hp 4 pot w garret snail impressed me. Made my heavy supercharged 4R feel like a slug lol. Bronco has IFS almost perfected...able to run 37s and no cutting needed. 4R needs RCV cryo D60 outers to be semi reliable on 35+ rubber. 4R front diff is weak w locker added....4R Fr Diffs/wheel bearings/lower ball joints and rack n pinions all go to hell once you goto 35's and actually wheel it. Bronco has none of those Issues. That being said the Bronco is the king of IFS and big rubber and Yoda is leader of the sub 35" tire gang where most mall crawlers live. SAS tons into a 4R and all downsides are removed except SA steering but anyone on 40s knows IFS handling/steering isnt a priority anymore. Or run the Marlin Crawler IFS system on 4R w beefed landcruiser 200 rack....but your still stuck w shit wheel bearings on anything over 34's and that weak front diff that explodes if driven wrong locked.
#Watching it in Dec 2023. A 5-6 years old 4runner is capable to tackle same terrains as a brand new Rubicon XR. Explains a lot about the 4runner. :)
Looks very familiar. Do you end coming out on chimney peak road. To the 178 i think i did the same run backwards and ended up on the 395 by jawbone.
4Runner 💯
Easy decision: Just ask youself do you want Ifs or live axle.
The 4Runner doesn't compete with the other two. 4Runner is a Grand Cherokee competitor.
I miss SoCal trails. I haven't found anything quite like it anywhere else in the country. I've got a '24 Bronco Badlands Sasquatch on order and I'm planning a trip back to the high desert just for old times sake.
Toyota. Because quality matters
Its insane that people think 4runners are in the same class as the jeep.
I'm guessing bronco has not been proven worthy yet, so no real offroad driver wanted it yet.
Get the Bronco. Badass off-road and well mannered as a daily driver. Plus the 2 doors just look good.
The best experience I can give was when my family drove down to the outer banks from north nj in our then breaks new trd off-road 4Runner. With 4 grown adults and all out stuff for 2 weeks roof rack loaded up it was the most pleasant roadtrip I’ve experienced. The ride is just fantastic. Then we met up with friends who live there to go driving on the beach. On oem highway tires aired down to 20 we had zero issues in the sand. Eventually we tried to get it stuck and could not. Our friends had a new wrangler and could not believe how comfortable and capable the 4Runner is. They have now got there own. It was a lease that has definitely become a forever car!
Liked and subscribed 🤩
You can add wireless CarPlay to you jeep. It’s a little dongle that will plug in your center console and make your CarPlay wireless
Very reassuring to see all the 4R love in the comments! Just got mine and love it.
Me too
Me three😂
I traded in my 2021 4Runner for my now 2024 Willy’s 4xe for many different reasons however I did try the bronco and thought it was amazing also but didn’t get it because I didn’t like the color and I wasn’t waiting 5weeks for my color option of delivery and I’m 100% happy with my Willy’s it’s better than I thought and off road good luck following it truly amazing
Hey Jonathon, I'm a novice, but would like to go out with you guys. I have a bunch of questions who can I talk to?
You sound just like the mandalorian
Jeep/Ford over the 4Runner any day every day
Toyota is the clear winner because of over all use , ride quality on and off road and Japanese built quailty and reliability. However with ample ground clearance, proper tires, locking diff and 4x4. Make model reallt wont matter. Realibikity and ride quality is left to oersonal discrerion.
Well if you want a rock crawler and overland buy a jeep or bronco and if you want get there and get back every single time for the next 40 years get a Toyota plus you don’t have to deal with a noisy cabin.🤙🏾
You'll have to pay a $25k for the dealer's parking space for the Bronco, so that's an automatic loss in my book. $25k buys a lot of 4runner mods. Everything you need to tow a dead ford out of the wilderness, and more.
Toyota 4Runner is my vehicle of Choice. Specially since I can’t afford to be going to repair shops as often. And I don’t think I wanna buy a new rig every 7 years.
Pure off-road prowess,Jeep. Comfort and reliability,Yota.Right in the middle but the top comes off, Bronco.
How fun! Good stuff man! I’ve the 20th anniversary Rubicon and love it. Cheating, truly! Hahaha
Idk if it’s just me, but the jeep owners who love them usually have under 100k miles. After that, they have two vehicles XD no questioning the capabilities and styling of the wrangler. But the reliability is sub par at best. That why I want a 4Runner. I want an everyday that also amazing off-road and known for 300k miles without a new transmission or engine
The jeep. And bronco are on a league of their own, the 4 runner is a SUV that can off road. When you can take door and roof off it's a whole different animal. Regardless of the capabilities, the 4runner isn't a roof/dorrs off vehicle.
Just enjoy what you dtive without a need to validate or justify. Who cares? Just enjoy the trip.
Test drive them and get what you like without needing validation or justification. It is your car. :)
Love my ‘23 Gladiator Rubicon…enjoy!
Jeep and Broncos are beautiful strippers. The 4runner might be older and outdated, but she is that wife that always got your back through thick and thin and won't DIE on you or GIVE UP on you !!!! Lol Toyota all day everyday for me !!!!
I love people going out of the norm. Bronco has a chance here to shine. They should make their base models bigger too than just another tiny suv lol
