Self etching primer is usually zinc phosphate (phosphoric acid) based but there's a big quality jump between the Home Depot Rustoleum Self Etch and the Seymour or other pro grade self etches. Epoxy, just regular epoxy primer, does not have zinc phosphate in it unless specified as a ZINC epoxy primer and that stuff is EXPENSIVE you won't end up with it by accident unless you just happen to overlook the several hundred extra dollars on your receipt.. Epoxy primer bonds so well because it's EPOXY, it's sticks like glue. And it's because it DOES NOT have phosphoric acid that it's so compatible, because residual phosphoric acids from "self etch" can inhibit the cure of epoxies as well as polyesters (most body fillers are polyester based, as well as polyester primers) causing them to lift, not fully hardened, or have a general weakness. Self etching primer is fine for DIY auto and small repairs, but I wouldn't even consider using it for restoration or a quality pro paint job, too many compatibility issues. Self etch really shines in non-automative fabrication work, like when you have some (clean and degreased) aluminum parts that you can't or don't want to sand blast, or galvanized parts that are nice and shiny (hard to get a good bond without etch). It has its place, but if you have the choice when doing autowork always go with an epoxy or a 2k urethane primer and leave the self-etch on the shelf. The other REALLY big issues with self etch in auto work (as if known and documented incompatibilities with body fillers and polyester primers isn't enough) is that spray-can self-etch is not a catalyzed finish. (epoxies, 2k urethanes, and polyesters are all catalyzed, once they harden they are generally immune to solvents). But self etch is not catalyzed, which means that at any time, even years from now, you can wipe it off with a solvent soaked rag, it never sets up like a true enamel does. So what happens when you go to spray over self-etch with a lacquer or 2k urethane? All that solvent in your wet film is going to melt back on your self-etch primer and increase the likelihood of the finish lifting, wrinkling, or having adhesion problems. There's just too many issues with self-etch in automotive work. Epoxy primer on a well prepped and clean surface is king.

You mean a clear coat? Depends on the paint, in this case it’s a single stage, matte finish paint, so no. If using a basecoat paint, then yes, but then would also require an etching primer first

I see you replaced one wheel arch. I don't know what you did to the other but it appears you sanded the paint/rust off and put epoxy primer over it. In the ending you showed and said that if you have spots of rust on the arch, you must repair it from the back and you showed the rust on the arch you cut off. How did you get behind the arch you only repaired, to treat the rust on the inside. And what about the inner wheel well, it is up tight to the fender.

  • @tunestone3071

This a poor design on fords part . At least on the 2013 ‘s .These wheel wells are built in such a way that it literally traps water on the backside of the well and is saturated by some kind of foam material which absorbs the water and of course this is the result . Not sure what the Ford engineers were thinking here outside of sabotaging their own vehicle….

    • @Johnnymidnight

They’re all engineered to rust out in 10 years. It’s an intentional design, otherwise they wouldn’t sell new ones
