TIGER at "INDY" SAAC-47, Shelby American Automobile Club "Open Track"

The "Shelby American Automobile Club" held it's 47th Convention at Indy in June 2022. One of the best events is the Open-Track (not a Parade Lap!), where club members can run their cars as hard as they want. I my case, I could not run too hard, as I drove (not trailered) the Tiger 1000 miles each way, there & back, but had a great time!

Thanks for all the interesting comments. This was a spur of the moment ride. I had been riding in the back like everyone else, when at a stop I told my wife that I was going to walk up & talk to the engineers. I told them that I had been a Boilerman in the Navy a half century ago, so I knew how steam engines work & had actually got to run a Mikado (see my other video), in addition to other cab-rides all over the country. I also mentioned why I was in Omaha, which was for a toy-train Convention. Then the engineer told me that one of the toy train tours that I was going to see, was actually a good friend of his. Then he said, jump up here, you can ride in the cab, just dumb luck...
I would like to see how the engineers drive the steam engines
Carefully. There is a lot to watch running a steam engine, furnace temperature, water level, & steam pressure. Any one of those things are not right, bad things will happen. This one is a replica purpose-built in 1968 for the Zoo.
Almost sounds as if the timing is off ever so slightly, but still an awesome ride!!! This was an awesome opportunity for you, thanks for taking us along❤❤
We got videos of 119 on our page. Miss driving her.
Did a WesPac on DDG-7 in '71 ...pretty much the same story...great video!
My Tiger raced at Seattle International Raceways in the 70's. I have had it 48 years and the best improvement to get traction and handling was going to 15 inch wheels and tires.
Sure, you can get bigger disc brakes along with the 15" rims, but I like the original 13" LAT wheels that I got with the car when I bought it in 1973...
Love the film of the Helios 21 and the Boat. Do you have the original film? Looks to be from Toy fair 1964. Brian
Brian, my copy was on VHS, that I converted to a DVD. I got it many years ago at York....
Looks like fun! How many Tigers took advantage of this ?
Surprisingly, only the nine guys in the photo at the end of the video.
Very nice group of Tigers and Alpines. I had a '64 Alpine series 4gt until themid '80s. I wish i could find an affordable Tiger now!
Prices on Tigers are lower than they were 10 years ago. They are out there...
Bathing beauties launching lionel submarines????? Now that was desperation.
Tremendous! My dad is overcome with nostalgia after I shared this find! I’m pretty sure that’s him at 31:13 🤯😅 Thank you so much for sharing this. It’s priceless
That's great, several people have told me that they saw themselves in the video also. At 31:13, that mug shot was a guy named "Monte", I believe (it's only been 50+ years, LOL). Tell your old man that next month there is a Waddell Reunion in Pensacola. 39 guys including myself will be there. Find the info on Facebook, Waddell Reunion page....
Thank You Train Man, I catch this show every year at this time! Completly luv it stuff I use to see as a kid! You had to be there I Say 😊
thank you 🥰
This is great! For the last fifty years people tell me you can't f' In hear! Like to show them this thanks! USS Richard s Edwards DD950 line backer crew
Hopefully, you have been to the V.A. for a "hearing loss" disability, $165 a month....
@@trainman7887 got my hearing aids last year, and $ 165,00, V.A paided back paid going back four years also, thanks!
Very Nice Tiger's. It's hard to believe it's been about 20 years since I went to the United in South Carolina. I was looking for Sunbeam parts . Luckily I still have my cars in storage.
Looks like a great day and many beautiful cars!
Pretty good turnout for the just 7K cars built nearly 60 years ago....
I was an MM2 on the Big E Westpacs 1971-1972 and 1972-1973. I loved the video.
I served on board the USS WADDELL from September 11, 1970 - November 12, 1973. I was a RM2 radioman. This brought back many memories. Great video. I remember operating with the USS NEWPORT NEWS up north near Haiphong Harbor. We were out on NGFS when the USS HIGBEE got hit. Saw the ship in port. Aft gunmount was charred black.
I've got a lot of responses, but the best ones are from shipmates aboard at the same time. I was just a bilge-rat, BT3. My life aboard the "wonderful Waddell", was a bit different than yours!, LOL! 'Glad you liked the video. Several shipmates said that they had seen themselves in the video, how about you?
No I did not. Sadly the only cruise book I have does not have the picture of IC Division ( operations communications - radio, signaled, and radarmen). A blank page that says this page left intentionally blank. I have no idea if that was done on purpose but would have been the only picture of me. It has the pickup truck damaged by the asroc launcher in it and pictures from our visit in Ethiopia. Thanks again for the awesome video.
Should read OC Division
@@michaeldwight3212 I just looked at my '72 Cruise Book & I see you are correct, No OC, but no B Division either. There are three pictures of me, I was one of Haille's Sideboys in Ethiopia on page 49, then another picture of me in the lower left of page 72 at Tiger Balm Gardens & also on the top left of page 80 in a clean shirt, while the BT1 next to me is fithy. The other thing is on my previous ship, I got a credit for ONE picture I took for the Cruise Book. On the Waddell", they used 10 of my pictures for the book, but no credit...
Any sources for parts body, trim , please advise. anyone

What 5 speed transmission did you swap into your tiger. Is it a worldclass 5 speed from a foxbody mustang???
No, it is a TREMEC TKO-600, but now there is smaller cased unit available that fits even easier. Still, the best upgrade I have ever done to that car in the 50 years I have had it....
When I was on the USS Okinawa from 81 to 85 the xo played on the road again
Cool room. Thanks for sharing
'Glad you liked the video. Four years ago, that room was almost affordable for a blue-collar guy like me, but no more. Prices have really gone up....
Fantastic video, I left the USS Chicago CG-11, M-Div., and the Navy in 1971 just before she was to deploy (WESTPAC) cruise.
Dec. '68 to July '71, B-Division, on the Chicago, also. 'Glad you liked the video, shipmate.
The video, the music content, everything is so great. I was stationed aboard the Kitty Hawk at the time of this video and left San Diego early '72. It's like being there again. Beautiful. Going up the hill on the tram was very special. I remember going to the top and jumping over this wall that was only about 2 1/2ft tall and telling my friend "I'm in China"! 🤣 Great memories.
'Glad you liked it! I too got out in '72, hard to believe that was a half a Century ago. The good news is we are still here!
Very nice
Back when they were a steal! Now surpassing 6 figures.
I bought my black MK-2 in '73, for $1800, but what it is worth today does not interest me as I drive the wheels off of it now. See my recent video running it on the INDY track, after driving it 1000 miles each way....
No matter how many times I see the old footage of the 1949 showroom layout it always makes me smile. I am the caretaker for the replica 1949 showroom layout at the Wisconsin Auto Museum, and every time I see the accessories working in the old footage, it reminds me of just how impressive the original was, and how, with the replica I work on being the only one left open to the public (There are at least two others that I know of, but they are in private residences), the magic that has to be recreated.
The Mt Clemons layout is in Riverhead Rail Museum NY
Great video. I served aboard the USS WICHITA(AOR 1) from Feb. 1972-Oct.1974. I can almost smell the smells of Jeepney exhausts and open sewage mixed with the smell of BBQ chicken(yah right!!!) Some great memories and some not so great.
'Glad you liked it John. When I posted it I was pretty new to youtube, I could have done a better job on the editing, but it's OK. In addition to the Waddell (for the video), I also served on the Richard B. Anderson DD-786, but spent most of my 4 years in the "PIT" of the Chicago CG-11, all out of San Diego. BT3, '68-'72.
@@trainman7887 You did a great job. I was an MM3 when I got out. I didn’t know you were a Snipe. I knew there was something I liked about your video 🙂🇺🇸🦅⚓️

USS Bausell D D 845
Wow
I like the inclusion of the Today Show segment with Dave Garroway. Seeing people play with the Lionel trains, operating cars, and accessories in real-time
'Seems like yesterday.........
Great video and memories. Most of us were under 25 and officers not much over 40. Never came close to those duties again in civilian life even in the Merchant Marine. Thank You for sharing!! What camera were you using? I sharing this with the kids and grand kids.
'Glad you liked it! I was using my Canon 814, Super-8 camera, that I still have 50 years later.....
@@trainman7887 No wonder you could film the engine room! Great camera! I wonder if they're still serviceable as my NIkon F2, I believe you can still get Super8 film but type and speeds are very limited
@@gregriutzel7834 Those night shots I shot of the USS Newport News almost got me busted. Our Chief caught several of us BT's on the main deck during GQ, which is not a place for any Snipe. I "Skated" out of it because our Lt. Commander Engineering Officer (my Chief's boss) told me that he was out there on the Bridge doing the same thing with his Canon 814!
Great Video Trainman ,I was aboard USS Somers DDG-34 April-Nov.1972 After Engine Rm.That Plane guarding segment was like I was there on Throttles in Engine Room. Also gunline action along Quant Tri brought back memories of dodging coastal artillery and averaging 4 hrs/day sleep, for long periods. We we're with Desron19 out of Long Beach .We deployed in April 6,1972 with 72 hr notice due to Tet offensive as you guys were already there.Again Thanks .
These were the good ‘ol days in the Navy…you work hard and play hard! Go Snipes and thanks for sharing this video.
Two westpacs, two IO cruises on the Warship Waddell. 76-77, 78-79. Good times.
'Glad you like the video!
Brought back alot of memorys thanks
As I have said before, after I posted this to youtube, they muted the sound for "Copyright-Infringement". So, I posted another copy without sound also. Then, years later some viewers got sound on this original copy. I am really at a loss on what is going on here, some devices have sound, some do not. Too weird......
Hector AR7 in the Da Nang Higbee bomb shot. Great to see it all again.
'Glad you liked it. It was quite a hassle for a BT to get out of the "hole" long enough to film the shots, then splice all those 3-Minute reels together, & then add the mechanical titles. Then 40 years later convert to digital, add more titles, & post to youtube, but everyone seems to like it, thanks!
glad to see you were out there... but that spongy brake pedal is not a good feeling 🙄
looks like a great turnout. Thanks for posting.
Wishing for more braking power and a 5 speed? Former Tiger owner
Yep! My stock brakes suck! As for the 5-spd, since I installed a Tremec TKO-600, eight years ago, I have logged 23K miles on the old girl that I bought in '73!
Appreciate the posting.
Thank you for posting. It's awesome to see so many great Shelby's in one location, cheers.
Looks like a great show! Someday maybe I'll have to attend.
Thank you for the video! This is great! I was there too.
Thank you! Your Tiger is great! I was there and took pictures, but when you get home and start looking at them, there just doesn't seem to be enough. Thank you for the video.
We all had a great time!
I am glad someone posted a video. Thanks I saw my car.
That's great & I am sure you had as much fun as I did there!
Wow! Awesome video! Awesome music! I was an FTG aboard USS Joseph Strauss DDG-16 on West-Pac tours in 70' and 72'. The pics and the music mirror my tours. Thank you!
David, I'm glad you liked the video. youtube is so weird, first I posted this video, but youtube stopped it showing for music "copywrite-infringement", so I made another copy with no sound. Then, over the years, some viewers like you were able to hear the original music added version, so I am really perplexed by what's going on here.....
Nice, thanks for Posting! Had this Video saved, until Cruise was canceled last Summer was supposed be on a 13nite Repo(Brilliance) in this Cabin.
Did you experience noise from the windjammer in this room? We are looking at it for a 12 day.
The best my wife & I can remember from that Cruise two years ago, is we don't remember much noise at all. I think that the area directly above that Suite was an outside area that was not heavily used. Some other Cruise's Suites were very noisy, but we do not remember this one being poor.
Whatever else you do, you can NOT let Gomez Addams come to within five miles of this amazing layout!
Impressive, do you have a Lionel Thomas?
Not my layout, a friend's......
@@trainman7887 oh nice! Please pass along all the compliments! Do you now if your friend has a Lionel Thomas?
@@owendinostudios1200 No, not sure....
