Hey, I'm Matthew a college student with love for technology, servers, homelabbing, and a push towards furthering my home servers and understanding of general IT work. When I'm not working on my servers I'm putting new Virtual Machines and Docker services onto my Threadripper server or messing with a new piece of technology I received in the mail! Welcome to my channel and I hope I can teach you something about my lab!
I'm FINALLY putting my homelab into a server rack
It’s been a long wait but I’m finally building a server rack and putting all my homelab gear in it! I don’t have much yet, but I decided to splurge, get a sysracks 18U server rack from sysracks, and build it over Christmas! Now I can finally tell people what’s in my server rack, this is an overview and walkthrough of my homelab and how I built the server rack including all the experiences I went through when putting it all together then ill give you my overall thoughts on the product and how you could potentially use sysracks for your own server rack needs!

Why I now backup to Tape for my Homelab
Просмотров 11 тыс.Год назад
I bought an as-is used LTO 5 drive from someone who couldn’t test it, for the price it was on eBay I couldn’t pass it up and decided to challenge myself to see if I could at least get it working enough to try out the tape in my data backup structure. This is a more winging-it adventure into what it took to get it working and some of the challenges I faced trying to set this up in a homelab envi...
The Best Dashboard for your Homelab and why YOU need to use it
Просмотров 20 тыс.Год назад
After being tired of constantly typing in service names or ip addresses to access my homelab systems once I moved forward to two systems I decided to set up a default dashboard for my homelab that acted as a homepage. I settled upon a dashboard called homepage by Ben Phelps and it has become a destination for all my homeservers and a dedicated go-to page for my overall homelab. Today we take a ...
Why YOU need a UPS for your Homelab
Просмотров 1,3 тыс.Год назад
An Uninterruptible Power Supply can be an essential part of a homelab, when working with filesystems or critical VMs for your home, sudden power losses can vastly affect recovery time when bringing systems back up. Eaton’s 5P1500RC rackmount UPS has become an essential part of my homelab. In this video, I review and go over the advantages of adding a UPS to your homelab and how I could fully in...
Turning an Old Computer into a 2U Rackmount Server for my Homelab! - SST-RM23-502 Review
Просмотров 10 тыс.2 года назад
In this video, we explore and build in the Silverstone SST-RM23-502, a rackmount case that is going to run proxmox and become a 2U server in my homelab, I review what I like, and dislike about the case and give an overall consensus on how the server case felt to work in! This build was able to be budget-built due to me taking these parts from an old computer I had lying around. I am excited to ...
If you're still making videos, could use some help getting a similar LTO6 drive to show properly on Windows 10 with an LSI9201-16e
Good job fam.
Btw I recommend using OpenHardwareMonitor instead of Speccy, and 7zip instead of Winrar. I used to use Speccy and Winrar but those alternatives are way better.
Here is some information to help you. You might want to add a note to your description text to say that this is largely archiving over backup. Also the file integrity check can be done via standard hash checksum _(cyclic polynomial)._ If not using 3rd party software, your MSWindows PowerShell (e.g. 4 up) can do it before writing to the tape, after writing to the tape and after the data is taken again from the tape to that directory (folder) on your desktop, stipulating MD5 or its SHA or whatever. Get-FileHash <filepath> -Algorithm MD5 My comment has no hate in it and I do no harm. I am not appalled or afraid, boasting or envying or complaining... Just saying. Psalms23: Giving thanks and praise to the Lord and peace and love. Also, I'd say Matthew6.
I love it. Can i set TrueNas to do regular backups on Tape like that? But automatically.
Got one too, but don’t like sharp edges inside the chassis where the power cable is routed and the switch of the PSU is not reachable the way it’s hiding behind the front panel. Not increasing confidence. Ok, the system in not often moved so hopefully nothing bad happen.
Anyone know what rails fit this?
Ayyyy finally another homelab youtuber! Subbed!
Thank you for the informative video, you get my thumbs up :) so now one year later - what do you think about this case? by the way how it the overall build quality? gauge of the steel ? any sharp corners? anything flimsy? I would love to see a followup video on this build
how to you add more widgets are not at their website instructions? for example TeamSpeak 3 Server, Piwigo, Subsonic, and other Games Servers, besides Minecraft?
Very nice video, I've been wanting to purchase a LTO drive to backup my home lab and seeing you moving data on and off has been insightful, thank you. I would setup multiple duplicati backups to a central NAS then a Ubuntu vm with a rsync job to write changes to the LTO on a weekly basis from the network share.
Great video thanks! Would really have liked to hear how much noise the case generates when you switched on the server.
How does It compare to M Disc?
So basically you can also build a rackmount from scratch using regular desktop PC parts like a micro atx motherboard and atx PSU? I thought server computers exclusively used server-only parts.
Alot of 2u 3u and 4u support matx atx, not all support standard psu
i'm impressed by the speed of exporting. thanks for sharing.
Did you have to install any special drivers to get the SAS controller to detect the tape drive? I have a quantum one and all I managed to get my system to detect was the SAS controller...
Sounds like your psu
I have LTO4 +MSL2024 on year ago. And upgrade to LTO5+LTO6 SAS this week. This technique is very interesting but a little bit expensive
Thanks for the review!
marbles moment
Any idea on how to add the watchtower widget? I have watchtower running in a container but it says I need to enable metrics but I have no clue how to do that. The documentation is confusing to me
I'm using lto-3 for my server since almost 10 years. But I do two additional copies on different hard drives in addition. So I have the original and then 3 copies of which 1 is to tape. As of LTO-5 there is LTFS support, so you can mount it and access it like an ordinary drive, which is awesome. My tape doesn't support LTFS (too old) so I'm still using the old fashioned tar command to do my backups. And it works great, although I might upgrade to a more modern LTO drive soon.
Thanks for posting! I was looking at one of these and also have a CM Haf case I wanted to put in it lol thanks for the info !
Hello, I enjoyed your video. Quick question, if you don't mind, I'm researching this UPS and saw on the spec sheet that its' input frequency range is 47-70Hz for 50Hz system and 56.5-70Hz for 60Hz system, as well as, a low sensitivity mode. Are the 50Hz System, 60Hz System, and Low sensitivity mode selectable options from the user input screen? Or is this something the unit automatically detects? I called Eaton customer support for clarification, but the person didn't seem very confident. Please advise if you have time. Thank you!
How would you mount this under Linux? Looking to purchase a LTO5 backup system.
Amazing vídeo! Thanks for this, the lto tecnólogy is insane 🚀🚀🚀
I kind of want an LTO too for archival (it's not really for my lab but my friend's but eh, we utilize it shared however) Right now we're archiving just on old HDD's. But the thing which worried me about using old LTO is, how does the software work? Do we also need an old host (like windows 7 or something) to interact with the old drives? It'd be amazing if we could just use Linux too considering almost everything on our lab is Linux based
You don't need an old host, but then again you shouldn't use anything less than LTO5 really. The capacities of the older gens just don't make it worthwhile in today's big data world and even LTO5 is pretty small now. But the reason it should be the baseline is because of LTFS support. As for Linux, of course you can, it definitely will have support.
hi have alot of data drive's they are very well made i have been very lucky with ebay over the years there's only on thing windows 10 doe's not like scsi cards i have windows 7 and nova backup works ace had a new amd b450 set up and old set up will not work i have 4 olt drives i made a silly misstake i fof got drivers why i was buying drives and they were not working when i get the drives nova backup up dates all the drivers for you now i have 20 plus data drives all working yes i know a new bee miss take i have a working 8 mm data drive so i been looking for old working data drives
Few months on… still enjoying the case ?
Just a comment, as for the older versions and compatibility... Linux has the most universal support for tape, more specifically Unix has a long heritage in using tapes.
Yep. I'm looking into getting one for my ProxMox Backup Server.
Used UPS can be a decent option for someone on a buget though you have to consider efficiency, software support, capacitors, other maintenance like checking fans/mosfets (not something avg person will likely be messing with) also 200-240v whenever possible get a nema 6-20 outlet over there and avoid using 120v it's good advice for pretty much everything but specially for servers due to efficiency and power output restrictions. The 60hz hum is from the solid core transformer inside the ups whenever it's charging the batteries or stepping up/down voltages can normally hum also when on battery mode, online ups is usually noisier but it's not due to being a pure sine wave output that would make it noisier than a modified sine wave :)
used UPSes rock but being able to get a replacement on a used eaton ups was the icing on the cake! Will continue to buy these for my lab as I need more backup power 😀
You should check out the Inter-Tech cases and the Icy Dock stuff get some rackmount cases or some actual server hardware to play with now :) Also the cooler master case inside a rack is blasphemy :D that should be illegal same for having RGB inside the rag utterly unacceptable.
I'm gonna buy like 3 sliger rackomount cases when their backorder is lifted!
Few things for you to know, serial number is mostly for tape libraries you don't need it in fact most tapes you buy brand new won't have the barcode sticker, you can literally double click the video file straight from the tape, may take a few seconds for the drive to cue and find the file since tape drives struggle with non sequential reads for obvious reasons but once it finds it will play at full speed just fine can even skip ahead etc i have an LTO 6 drive currently i want to get an 8 or 9 when i can afford, oh and please get two tapes for any archive, always 2 copies at different locations ideally different brands of tape as well and nice video make some more you're very nice and enjoyable to watch :3 Also I made a video ages ago called Tape Streaming Test, you can see there what a tape drive plus a simple FTP server with a VLC client can do :)
I've learned a lot since posting this video, I'm gonna post an updated video once I consistently get my tape backup structure setup, ill check out your videos soon and appreciate the notes! When I've tried to double-click the files straight from the tape and it will seek around so much it freezes up my system, I would love to go up to an ew LTO 8 or 9 Drive also
@@TechShocked You have to be patient, sometimes can take over a minute for the drive to find the file LTFS is a bit dumb sometimes can go all the way to the end of a tape then all the way back then some more and some more until it finally finds it, now if you're not getting any drive activity then it's something with the LTFS binaries, but the file won't open/start playing until the drive is ready so literally double click and do nothing else but wait it will load and voila :) You're likely just seeing the explorer hanging because the drive isn't ready and the system can't read the file yet so it just hangs (ideally it should be a little more verbose like Seeking File.. Please Wait) I also learned a lot about LTFS over the years but I assure you LTFS is the same from LTO 5 to LTO 9 only differences are capacity and read/write speed LTO 5 can do 140mb/s LTO 6 can do 160mh/s trivial difference even, you can find the table on wikipedia about it.
Loved the video! Currently using Homer but I need to check this out - keep up the great work!
Thank you!
Dashy is dope too.
Aguante Dashy gato!
WOAH congrats on the server rack looks pretty swag
your pronunciation is almost incomprehensible for me as a German - too fast and too unclear, what a pity!
Sorry about that, working on being more clear language wise in my videos, you could try to see if auto translation could help, I hope to pair my videos with blog posts soon for people who wanna follow along in a non video format!
Hey! Love the content and keep it up! if you add some networking gear look into rackstuds. Your fingers will thank you.
Thank you! I will definitely look into rackstuds for my networking
U GO TO MOLLY?!?!?!!!!!!
santa claus came through
minecraft server gonna go hard
the honeycombs on the rack look so cool i love that design
bro manuals ain’t ever do a damn thing, how did u manage without getting frustrated⁉️
to be honest there's a lot of uncut footage where I was very frustrated, that's why I recommended having a second set of hands but once I got on a roll I was able to get through it!
Can it run fortnite
boot it on my pc
Now you just need some rack servers & switches !
That's the plan!! Rackmount case asap (already back-ordered) and a network switch (really trying to feel out my options on this one) if I'm getting one it has to be able to do 10gb SFP+ just for future use so I'm not shoehorned
@@TechShocked Engenius switches ROCK highly recommended & have 4 sfp+ ports, if you need more you could buy their 16 port SFP+ or the Mikrotik 8 port like me.
@@TechShocked Purchase the MikroTik CSS326 bro. 24 Gigabit ports, 2 SFP+ ports, ability to use redundant power supply and L2 management. I use it on my home lab and in a lot of my customers. Nice video BTW. Liked and subbed. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
@@gabrielporto.mikrotik just got a switch!! video to come soon
@@TechShocked Great. Looking forward to. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Would you get a server rack for your own homelab gear?
yes!!!! my homelab gear is in desperate need of some organization
Definitely. I already have. Check my videos if possible.
Good first vid, v useful! Keep at it!
Thank you!
@TechShocked, Awesome video. Definitely going to try this out. Just an FYI, your plex api token was partially leaked. You might want to change it. The blurring effect kinda stops the few frames before you switch from notepad++ to the homepage at 2:35. Was going to DM you but couldn't find an address and you don't accept DM's on Twitter. Feel free to delete this comment.
Thank you I appreciate it! thought I covered it all but ill reset it!
I am impressed of this application, but, it is easier for me to just use CasaOS as it provides a beautiful homepage and manages docker apps for me.
Network rack setup tour?
