Edward’s Family Workshop
Добавлен 4 ноя 2021
Welcome to Edward's Family Workshop!
Rebranded from Brad, Just a Dad
This channel started out as a sort of video documentation project for my children to see what it is that this Dad does for his family.
In the last 9 months or so it has evolved into a full blown content creation and learning channel.
Along the way I have learned from so many other RUclips creators and I just can't say how incredibly informative RUclips can be when you're looking for the right answers!
Now I have officially started a business here in Canada that will in the coming months start to sell the projects that I create and I will be filming my processes for everyone to see and learn from.
As I progress down this path there is no doubt that I will continue to use RUclips to further develop and improve my skills with the help of experts and teachers.
Follow me as I perfect my craft....
And please don't ever hesitate to correct me if you know of a better way!
Thank you all so much for watching!!

8 foot picnic table build 62724
I can't tell you how happy I am with this build!
I've seen videos about 2 hour picnic builds and I'm here to tell you that this one took considerably longer.... 8 hours total. But to be fair these other builds were not as extensive as mine so a 2 hour picnic table is definitely possible.
I used 2x6 untreated pine boards for the majority of this build supplemented with 2x4 braces.
I wanted to build an 8 foot picnic table because I want more people to be able to sit there. This table fits 8 adults comfortably and probably at least 10 kids. It's big, heavy, and just the right amount of strength and portability that you can hope for with a table this large.

This is a quick video of the flooding of my 24x44 foot backyard rink. I'm a first timer but I really took the time to learn from others especially on RUclips! The flooding took about 29 hours from just 1 garden hose. I waited for a perfect time to flood so it really minimized any defects. It was around -7C with no snow falling and really no wind. I could not be happier with the results! After a...

This project was a lot of fun to work on! Had to utilize multiple build techniques and tools. From building my own melamine mold, building my brand new router sled, and picking out the right live edge pieces from my go to wood guy, this build challenged me like no other before! I used 3 gallons of Deep Pour Epoxy on this project. Easily the biggest pour I've ever done. I used 2 live edge pieces...

Hey everyone I hope you enjoy the latest video! I'm moving into bigger projects and my 13 inch planer is obviously not big enough. Therefore I've built this brand new router sled. I decided to use a linear rail system to make for ultra smooth operation. The sled works amazingly well! I mounted a 2 1/4 hp Dewalt router to the rails. I used 1500 mm rails for both top and bottom. I'm excited to present this video of the brand new Work Bench that I just built. I wanted to keep it relatively simple and light weight. I don't need a bench over complicated, I just needed a 4x8 work surface that also doubles as an out feed for my table saw. I do a lot of work with epoxy so I wanted to incorporate levelling casters into the build. Link down below. I might in the future put in ...

I'm also a DIY'er and find it hard to spend so much money on something that I can make. My question is, what amount of Pond Shield did you use for the 2 coats in your cold plunge? Thanks for making this video!
@@f8thntheos I bought 2 1.5 quart kits. I used 1 whole kit and a small portion of the other. In hindsight, having the extra stuff available I should have put on another coat.
How do you drain the water when you need to refresh the bath? I have the same setup but mine has a makeshift drain plug at the bottom installed by my friend Just wondering about leakage solutions if you have a drain plug as well
I don't have a drain plug. I use a submersible pump to empty it
Great vid! How long did you let it cure before filling with water?
2 days just to make sure
Hey, I am from Belgium and Pond Shield not available here. Any suggestions for somehting else that i can find in Belgium ?
@@mhboxingmikke3437 a lot of people are using truck bed liners like Rhino liners or Line-X. Those options are significantly more expensive and involve bringing the chest freezer to the shop. The other thing you could do is look for counter top epoxy resin products that are thicker than normal resins. I learned a lot from this Facebook group facebook.com/profile.php?id=100063672847053&mibextid=LQQJ4d
See if you can order liquid rubber
Congrats, nice job! Thanks for the video
@@menita75 thank you for there compliment ✊💯
not too shabby man, remember to raise it and mix it up now and then. rodents love compost bins.
Isnt one coat enough?
@@YORI-TV you can probably get away with only 1. I had another freezer that I only used JB water weld on and it was fine. I just wanted mine to have extra protection. To be honest I’m probably going to add an extra coat now because I have the pond shield so why not🤘
@@edwardsfamilyworkshop Thank you for the very helpful reply so that we can understand it much better. I'm a newbie and still looking for a good JB water weld alternative for Europe on a budget :D Good luck & Good Health!
thank you for sharing your experience! =)
thank you for watching🙏
I personally would have sanded as I went, as well as stained 2 good coats as I went so inner butting boards were also stained. So much easier to stain & add sealer while in pieces. I like a bigger picnic table, although heavy I’d make so 4 adults can sit on each side w/no one straddling center support legs. Plus at least a board wider at table top. There’s never enough room on picnic tops. I also put a stone under each leg to avoid direct contact to the ground, it will last so much longer from rot on leg feet. Nice build! Thx
@@msplum3306 thank you for those insightful comments 🙏 Part of the reason I do these videos is to get better at this craft and to hear from others how to do just that🙂 I’ll definitely be taking the advice 💯 Especially the stone idea… that’s brilliant! Have a great night
Nice build buddy, just an idea, but instead of finger screwing to start the screws after predrilling, use a hammer and give 1 or 2 taps. Looks good 👍
Great stuff. How long between first coat and second coat?
@@davesteigerwald4474 I believe it was 1 hour
Excellent job my friend. I might have to build one for myself, after watching your video. Nice work.
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment! Very much appreciated 💯😁
Hey thanks for the update! Im really glad to hear the pond shield is holding up for ya! I was gonna mount my filtration on the outside because my freezer is not near as big as yours and try to run all the piping down below at the bottom just under where i sit! Not sure if i should try and get the discharge of pump to run to the top like you did, it does make sense but again I’m limited on space! My cold plunge will be outdoors next to my hot tub so thats kind of nice:) Cant wait to get started Thanks again for the update now im even more motivated!
I have a hot tub and an infrared sauna and they work well with the cold plunge. The hot and cold contrast is really invigorating. Glad I can help💯✊
@@edwardsfamilyworkshopwell i finally got all the prep work done on my deep freezer applied first coat! I was reading on the directions that a second coat was only needed for rough surfaces. I waited 8 hours and i laid the freezer on its side and decided to do a second coat on the sides because the bottom was thick enough. I rotated and did all sides like that The second coat on the sides was money! I hope to be filling it up this weekend i opted out of hard piping and will be adding a marine submersible filter and submersible UV filter along with other things Thanks for the videos and advise!
Did you do that entire freezer with one 1.5qt kit?
I bought 2 of the kits. I used 1 whole kit and 1/4 of the other 1. After a year aha a half the pond shield has held up amazingly well. Hindsight being 20/20 what I should have done was use the whole other kit because let’s face it I’m not using it for anything else.
@edwardsfamilyworkshop I did just finish mine. I only used the one kit, but it was 3 full coats. It could use another 1 more coat, but I left it there, working good so far., Thanks for the response.
@@Lowlife62 I have a 18 month follow up video coming tonight that goes over my experience. Yours should be plenty fine💯
Great video and tips! Would be cool if you did a follow up video on what you like and dislike or what you would do different? Also showing the filtration system and should the filtrations system and drain be done before or after pond shield? Thanks again I really want one convert mine this year
That’s a great idea. Thanks for reaching out. I’m going to do a follow up video by the end of the week💯
Cool look forward to seeing the video:) Hope it will answer my questions! I have my deep freezer and im ready to get started:)
@@Brumasterj video coming tonight👍
Hey brad i seen videos where people show to use jb weld on all the seams, did you do that at all?
@@Brumasterj yes I absolutely did. I would highly recommend that you ONLY use the JB Water Weld brand. From what I’ve seen with other people’s builds that’s the only brand that most people use
Why do you need to sand?
You need a rough surface to allow the pond shield to adhere
Good job big bro
How has this held up? Anything you'd change or do differently?
So far everything is great. Nothing failed. Only thing was pond shield got chipped when something fell on the ledge.
Update does it still work?
Thanks for asking. It's still going strong! No problems at all I'm happy to confirm
Thanks for the video. How much of the alcohol did you use to prep it in the cup before adding the color?
I can't remember the exact ratio because I don't have the kit anymore but I do remember that I used approximately half of what they suggested just to thin it a bit and make it more workable
nice coldplunge... how much tubes of jb waterweld did u use???
I think the total was about 15. $10 a pop but absolutely essential!
Great video pal! I’m doing my chest freezer tomorrow with sky blue. How has yours been holding up after a year? Thanks for the video.
My pond shield has held up amazingly well! As long as you take care in the application it should last for a very long time. the only problem I had was a spot near the top that I accidentally banged when I was fitting in my filtration system
They said 60grit because the manufacturer recommends 60grit.
80 was more than fine
Hey Edward, is there an special reason why you first did the floor and just after that the walls, instead of all at the same time? Thank you! Gonna start in an hour
So sorry I didn't see this comment for some reason. I. did the floor first so I didn't mess up the sides
@@edwardsfamilyworkshop alfight, thank you
did you seal the corners with sealant before sanding? or does the pond seal do the sealing. thanks
Looks like JB Water Weld was used which is what’s always recommended.
For some reason I didn't see this comment til now. Yes JB water weld would be the only thing you use to seal the seams
How is this holding up with just the two coats one year later any leaks or problems?
I'm sorry I missed this comment. 2 coats were plenty. I just released an 18 month follow up vid
I ordered my 20ft freezer today
Well, I fucked up. Part a is written in a letter with expiry date, so small I couldn't see it. Thought it was just mix and apply, not opening part B. So didn't have enough but was enough farcthe walls. On the bottom I poured beach sand and poured regular epoxy.
So with 2 kits you definetly can add 3 coats on that size of an chest freezer i guess?
Yes for sure you could
@@edwardsfamilyworkshop thank you
Does that wire just unplug?? I have the same DIY cold plunge and a am trying to mod it so the lid opens to 90 degrees. Any ideas?
I think the wire you’re talking about is just for the light. To be honest I’ve never felt the need to have the lid open to 90 degrees
Do you have a link to the pond shield you used
Pond Armor SKU-CBLUE-QT-R Non-Toxic Pond Shield Epoxy Paint, 1.5-Quart, Competition Blue a.co/d/6j69fDJ
How long did you wait between coats?
I think I waited about 6 hours. More than 10 hours and you would need to lightly sand again.
Hey Brad, just looking for some clarification about the process for a freezer with an aluminum interior. Is application of a self etching primer necessary prior to the pond shield? If so, do you sand before or after applying the self etching primer?
From what I've learned yes you should probably sand before you use the self etching primer. I don't have any experience with aluminum interior. I would recommend you look for the Facebook group DIY Chest Freezer & Chiller Cold Plunges. It's run by a guy named John Richter and you will find a ton of great information there. I learned a lot of stuff from him and the group.
Watching this video encouraged me to do this myself, I got a great result and my cold plunge has been awesome!
Your comment just made my day! Comments like this are why I do these videos. Thanks again
I stuck around to see how the table saw was supported, but you didn’t show that part.😢😢 Beast of a workbench though. Nicely done!
Thanks for watching and the kind words. I just built a simple support out of 6 pieces of 2x4. Nothing fancy at all.
Hey can u do another fishing trip? Take the kiddos to Lockport, for some catfish, not bullheads like the last time. Or another spot, there's so many. Fall is about here, and the walleyes start to run up the red river in a month or so. Ur shot at a big greenback walleye.
Funny you mention that because we were just talking about heading to Lockport
Great idea. The fish are hungry, and filling up for the winter. Good lick if u guys end up going. I'll be checking out a few spots. Raw shrimp is always good for catfish. Worms and minnows will be good and pick up other species too. Just use enough weight that ur bait doesn't get pushed around and snag up, 1-3oz. Big cats could give u trouble with line that is too light, and light gear tho. If the kiddos hook into a big cat, it'll be something to remember! Tight lines!
Those are adult bullhead, not juvenile catfish. U may get some small sauger in the la Salle, walleyes unlikely. The problem with that bridge is it offers no structure for the fish to relate to, only shade, which they don't need in that water. I'm sure the nanny was impressed with ur fishing prowess tho, so all good.
Thanks for taking the time to teach me about the fish in that river. I'm still a bit of a novice when it comes to fishing but my son and I love it!
sweet! i'm getting ready to put mine on. just finished the JBW (that was rough). Hopefully this is a breeze comparatively!
JBW is really time consuming for sure. Pond shield will require a little patience and finesse but it will be quicker for sure
Thanks for taking the time to record the process man, really makes everything easier!
I appreciate the comment more than you know!! Thanks brother😄
Great job on the video. That's the first time I'd heard to use the alcohol to help thin it a little. Do you feel like this actually helps seal a little bit? I wonder if it would cover over silicone or just water weld?
The thing with adding alcohol in my opinion it just makes it a little more smooth to apply. You can definitely just use pond shield as is but if I had to do it again I would still use a bit of alcohol to thin it out. Thanks for the comment bro!
Hi Brad. The interior of my 8.8 cu ft midea freezer I believe is some kind of plastic or pvc. will the pond shield work on plastic? If so would I sand or prime it first?
As long as you scuff it enough to make the pond shield stick you’ll be fine. 80 grit was enough for me
Do you use a filtration system to keep the water clean?
I use a whole house filter for filtration and a ozone generator to help keep the particulates under control. I also always have a shower and use a brush to scrub away any loose skin cells. It really helps I assure you. I get about 6 months of use before I change the water which is more than you can ask for. I’ve had a hot tub for years and I do the same with that. The biggest thing with water devices is soap residue from your skin and from your laundry so I always go in the buff 😁
@@edwardsfamilyworkshop6 months is awesome. I e added to the to do list. Thanks for the feedback.
Wow! So nice I love it
Thanks Brad, extremely helpful video. Thanks for sharing. Is this pond liner cosmetic or does it help with sealing as well? Also does it make the tup slippery getting in and out. I think I want to have something to grip to at the bottom to get and out easier.
It really does help with the sealing. I had a freezer plunge with just JB water weld and it eventually succumbed to the leakage
Hey Brad, I found your video to be extremely helpful. Thank you for posting it. I have a 14 cubic ft freezer, and it appears to have a metal or possibly aluminum interior. I'm interested in applying pond shield to it. Could you please provide me with the necessary steps to do so?
Thank you so much for the compliment. If you have the aluminum interior you'll have to do an extra step. Everything else in my video still applies. All you would need to do is buy a self etching primer to apply on the whole interior of the freezer. This will help the pond shield application adhere to the aluminum. That's all you would need to add to the process. hope that helps you out.
@@edwardsfamilyworkshopis this a necessity?
@@isaacsmith9981 from what I’ve learned from others if you have an aluminum interior then you’ll need self etching primer or the pond shield won’t adhere properly
Hey Brad, how is this coating holding up over time? Did you do a 3'rd coat or wish you would have? I saw one of the comments talked about the metal interior versus the white. With all the research you did, do you think as long as it is sanded well the metal interior does not need a self etching primer before the pond liner? That adds a bunch of cost and complexity, so I would be very happy to just sand very well, do JB weld, and then pond liner. Also did you think about doing any kind of flakes on the last layer like a garage floor to make it more grippy? Just a thought.
Hey Matt sorry for the delay. You know I had enough to do a 3rd coat and If I were to do it again I'd definitely do it. Once I had my process down it didn't take too much more effort. Next time I drain my plunge I just might add the 3rd coat. It can only serve to make it more robust. As far as self etching primer goes it's absolutely not necessary. I had a few conversations with other plungers and it was unanimous. In my experience I've never felt the need to add any sort of grip to the bottom. Just take it easy getting in and out. Hope that helps
Good Job 👍
Thank you 🙏
Did you already use a sealant on the seams of the chest freezer, before you put the shield epoxy ?
Yes I used JB waterweld. absolutely the best product for the job. I wouldn't use anything else
@@edwardsfamilyworkshop that’s what I figured. Thanks!
@@edwardsfamilyworkshophow long after applying jbww did you wait till you sanded and applied pond shield?

How has this held up? considering doing It didn’t know whether I should use a bedliner material or something like this.
It definitely protects well and gives me that extra piece of mind. I had another freezer I built a couple years ago that didn't have the pond shield and now it's no longer here so I just conclude that this helps a bunch. The bedliner option is in my opinion a better protective layer but it's also about 3 times more expensive.
