I wish they would let him break the record. I understand you risk a possible injury but they should give it to him. He deserves it!!

If he stays healthy and keeps playing for 1-2 more years, I can see him hitting that mark-especially if the Caps remain competitive. But I agree, it’s a fine line. There's a risk of overstaying his welcome, and no one wants to see a legend tarnish their legacy. If he gets close I think he’ll push for it but he’ll have to make that call when the time is right.

That's pretty weak if you ask me. The guy is close enough, being 25 goals away from breaking the record, that there is a true shot that he can grab the record this year if he keeps to his historic pace of about 0.60 goals per game. Unlikely, but not outright impossible. Based on the numbers it wouldn't be shocking if he can achieve it in the last game or last few games of the season. Yet you're suggesting the idea "oh he should retire soon even if he doesn't have it"? Why is this even a discussion. Guy not only clearly still has it, but he's close enough away that any discussion of NHL retirement is completely off the table if he's close enough. Plus, this caps team is clearly good enough to be a potential contender, if he feels there's a chance for another cup why would he leave? Also, saying "ray bourque stained his career to be ahead of coffey" has to be the most braindead thing I've ever heard. The man stuck around as long as he did to win a cup, and of anything in his very long and fruitful career it's "after 22 years, Raymond Bourque" that people remember the most. Outright stupidity.

Last year and even the year before there were tons of people talking about should Crosby retire...and he's a way better player at this stage of their careers and age than Ovi is, so why not have that conversation about Ovi?? Lastly, and I know you'll love this one, Paul Coffey was way better than Bourque, faster, offensively superior by far, and equally as good defensively. You can say he didn't because he already had his cups, but he retired when he seen the decline happening instead, like a player should. I don't want to see Ovi finish his career on a 22 goal 40 point season either where he looks like a shell of himself just to beat a record...who does? Fedorov was one of my favorite players, I wanted him to hit that 500 goal mark badly, and he'd have only needed to play 20-25 more games to hit it, but I respected him even more for retiring when he felt it was time...I'd like to be able to say that about Ovi too, regardless if he breaks the goal record or not.

I'm just saying nobody really remembers any Bourque vs Coffey thing and I don't think anybody cares that he was over the hill for a few years because he accomplished something: he won a cup. A similar thing would happen to Ovechkin: breaking one of if not the most coveted record in hockey. i think it's silly to trivialize a player's career or accomplishments for the little bit of their twilight where maybe they're not the best, and you can't predict that. Like Ovi this year has 17 goals in 20 games or something, he clearly hasn't reached that stage this year, he's not at the end of his rope. is it really going to ruin Ovi's career if he's say 7 goals short and has a 25 goal season next year? Heck no. It's still important, it's still impactful, and he's had a good enough career where he's more than earned the benefit of the doubt.

This is true but it is still an impressive accomplishment that ovechkin is about to get.

Why do people keep bringing up that sort of thing? "oh what about assists" and stuff like that. Nobody is comparing that. It is simply about the goal record, which is a very important and impactful record in the sport. And I don't understand why there's the need to compare, or why every appraisal of him is viewed by some people as tarnishing Wayne Gretzky's legacy in some way. Alexander Ovechkin is the greatest goal scorer in NHL history. Nobody else can do what he does.

You make some solid points. The drop in WAR each year is concerning, especially when you factor in the juiced ball season in 2019.

Pete's glove is better than average. He Been getting better defensively every year. His D is no longer suspect

Missing out on all the other possibilities have forced the Mets to negotiate with him. A 1 year prove it deal is fair. He was offered a few options for a fair contract and he turned his back on the team and hired Boras.

Pete is not being devalued, hes overvaluing himself. All those players you mentioned have a much bigger impact on the team then Pete. Pete is trending lower. Why give him a 25% raise when he literally stunk up the joint this year. And Pete was satisfied with his performance? Id let him go. He can not handle the pressure. Those 2 Playoff HRs do not offset what he did this past year. He hit too many SOLO hrs & left too many men on base. Many of his HRs were in garbage time & didnt mean anything.

90 Mil over 3 years makes him the highest paid 1st baseman in the MLB by AAV, if he has all those good years left then why not take being the highest paid guy at your position in the entire MLB for the next 3 years then cash in on all those good years you have left. The fact of the matter is Pete was the absolute worst defensive first baseman in the MLB last year (strictly by the numbers, Vlad was 2nd worst so it doesn't mean you're a bad player it just means you're costing the team outs/wins with poor defense) and his hitting wasn't that good and it has been worse basically every year. If you look at analytics which a lot of teams do now Pete not a great player in the last few season and he's trending downward every season. He also just turned 30 not just turned 29. He went from a 5 WAR player to a 4 WAR player to a 3 WAR player to last year a 2 WAR player so they offered him a big deal before he turned it down then he went out to have the worst season of his career and they are still willing to make him the highest paid 1st baseman in the MLB for the next three years. The offered him a deal better then Nimmo and he said no and turned it down because he wanted to prove he was worth more and test the market. He proved he was worth less with his worst season of his career and tested the market to find there is no market, so the Mets offering him a deal that makes him the highest paid 1st baseman in the MLB is basically charity at this point because he's a fan favorite.

What are you saying? If average goals scored in time of Gretzky was more than in time of Ovechkin, then it means that Ovechkin's number of goals is more impressive. Because it is harder in times of Ovechkin to score. Not the other way around.

I agree there’s always value in finding a gem later-Melroe or Beck could definitely work-but I think the Giants’ best move would've been locking up that QB at the top. @@harleysmith3479 I see your point-Beck and Milroe both have strengths that could fit the Giants' needs. Milroe’s ability to move outside the pocket gives him that dynamic edge, while Beck’s poise in the pocket could bring stability. Given the Giants' offensive struggles, I’d lean toward Milroe if they’re looking for a playmaker who can add a different dimension to their offense. Do you have anyone specific in mind for DL, CB, OL or TE?

@ it’s hard to say. So much talk on possibly injuring not only Saquon, but the old line that the bigger goal being the Super Bowl is more important. That’s understandable but for me I think for Saquon and for the old line and the mentality going into the playoff run, it’s important to go ahead and let him get that. The team will be hype. The momentum will be in our favor and we can’t bet on the possibly being hurt because that could have happen any game of the season. The biggest precaution right now, for me, is that it is against the Giants. They do NOT want him to get that on THEIR heads so they will be possibly headhunting so to speak. I’m not saying he will never get there again, but the likelihood is slim heaven for bed. We get bounced in the playoffs before getting that trophy. I think there will be big regrets of not at least trying to get it for him and the team. That title’s been sitting for 40 years. It may be sitting for 50 more after Saquon.
