How to Play: Dark was the night, Cold was the ground | Ry Cooder's Version
Been working on this for months - a slide classic! A blues song so iconic it was chosen for the Voyager’s golden records and is now hurtling through interstellar space.
Used the Ry Cooder version as the guide, but could do another video on the original if there’s interest?
The TAB I put together for this will be a free download from my website Jeremys.studio

Here's a guide to play David Lindley's first solo from a live performance of 'These Days' in 1978. I wanted to go through this one, as I feel it really captures Lindley's gift for understated, throughly engaging melodic writing. Here's a quick guide to play the intro for Guantanamo. I don't go through the chords for the song (it's basically I-IV-V) -nor the solo (it's in standard tuning) but they seemed pretty straight forward so you're on your own there! The aim here was really to try and emulate the sound of Ry's guitar - and what a sound it is! A big part of it, is the room - and I spent quite a bit of time trying t...

A cure for insomnia - some people would pay good money for that!
Although I always wait for any choice you make!
Hi Pete- did you mention the original dark was the night? Can’t see the comment now 🤔
@ hey Jeremy I was saying if you chose do the original too! It’s do classic !
Thank you very much 🤘
More than welcome - glad someone got something out of my ramblings 😆
I have this guitar in blue! Had it for about 3 years. Weirdly just started learning slide and saw your video and thought ‘no way another shijie!’
Another Shijie in the wild! I have to say that I kind of thought more people would be playing them. I think perhaps the marketing or price point or something isn’t quite dialed in right. 🤔
@ yes I agree. When I bought it it was cheaper, I have an S type and a T type. The S type has stainless steel and a lot of the features you need to pay a fair bit more for now. The T style is a newer purchase at 800 GBP but I think they’re more now with shipping and everything can put it to over 1k and I think that’s a bit over what it should be. Not from a quality point of view but from the point of view of someone who is talking a risk on the brand you know?
@@LeeJCanderoh right I’ve lost touch with the models and pricing but asking a grand for a Chinese guitar just won’t sit right with many players. And like you say it’s nothing to do with quality either. It’s just that story that runs through western culture of US made guitars being the best. It’s a hard one to shift. I’m sure people would even buy a US guitar if it was objectively worse than another AND pay more for the privilege! I contacted shijie trying to buy one of their necks a few years ago but they didn’t for for it. Think they need an overhaul. Cut costs somehow keep the neck and keep the rest bare bones. Really think 0:06 they need some help with marketing and overall branding.
@ yeah I agree. We had a good supplier in the uk at one point. Kept the price down by batch ordering popular colours that’s how I got my tele. What’s sad is my S type is unreal. It was the last model they made in the original factory so other than the pickups has all the more premium priced stuff, but like I said, now it costs well over 1k and I don’t like the thought of paying a significant amount more than I did for the same thing you know? Though the two I have are beautiful. My tele is set up in open D as I begin my slide journey and sounds great. Honestly, my s type though… if I put in better pickups it’d compete with a suhr. It is pretty heavy though which is weird as the tele is so light. Having said that i actually like heavy guitars.
@@LeeJCander I just looked back and I paid $799 for my TLV in 2020. I thought it was slightly cheaper than that. In any case they are a grand now, that is a bit more than I would have expected. Looked at the website too...it's better than it was. Still needs an overhaul as does their line up...there's some super ugly semi-metal guitars in there. They should concentrate on the ones that sell, and try and reduce overheads. Nice that you've got the TLV in open D - that what I have it in, though I'll push it to open E. Use flat wounds on it these days, you should try that as well. What gauge are you using? I'm 12s I believe...though with flats I change them so infrequently it's hard to remember!
Beautiful, Jeremy!
Thank you, much appreciated 🙏
Very nice playing but wasn't that Les Paul in open G? KR uses it on Honky Tonk Woman
Hi - could have been open G but based on the solo I’d say the 5th string was a. There’s a part in the second solo that is easier that way. Are you sure mick played the Les Paul for these concerts? I was fairly sure it was the 335 🤔
@@JeremyJames_studioIt‘s the Les Paul with the Bigsby MT bought from KR when he was in the Blues Breakers KR plays it on Honky Tonk Woman in the movie and there are photos of MT playing slide on it The rest of the time he played an SG KR played a number of guitars including a 355, black LP Custom, Dan Armstrong plexi And once again, very nice playing. I like to mess around with that solo but I play slide with my fingers' so it ends up sounding different
Humbucker all the way for me
Is that so, most people who have dropped a comment liked the p90s. Not that there’s too much in it 🍻
8 line poem by bowie??? fvck yes, sir.
Had to learn it for that video too! Love that song. Still can’t believe he’s gone…🥹
Hola, puedes ,decirme la colocación de los potenciómetro en el amplificador y los efectos gracias
Hola! I used the Princeton reissue on about volume 4.5. Only pedal was the origin effects revival Trem (which is now named something else) which changed the sound a little and added the tremolo. If you use flat wound strings you’ll get closer to the sound than I did here using round wounds. 🙏
Gracias 🙂
This is a really helpful video, thank you. It's really hard to find true information about noise levels. You find some statements chucked out on forums, but this is the only real comparison I've seen.
Hi Mark - oh that’s good to know. I basically was answering the question I asked sweetwater ( who couldn’t answer it) - as in, how quiet is the paraeq compared to the other ones. I wish I could have thrown a modded boss one in - THAT is still a question for me. But the results I found were pretty obvious. 🍻
Hi, thanks for posting this, and indeed your other Ry Cooder tunes. There are very few people doing slide lessons of this quality on the web, so please don’t apologise for the length of them. The detail is where the quality is. It ain’t the notes you play, it’s the way you play them.
Thanks for this - most encouraging. I do feel I go long sometimes. In fact I would prefer to go even slower! Cause realistically if I was teaching face to face I would move slowly and throw in some mobility / precision moments as and when. Cheers 🍻
@@JeremyJames_studio there are so many nuances to slide playing to do with touch and intonation I don’t think you can give too much detail personally. Only stumbled across you today and hope the channel goes on to the success it deserves.
@@GH-cm3rrI completely agree with you. It’s an interesting process trying to calibrate an approach to presenting these details. I think I will slow down a little and introduce some of the practice points I use along the way. I kind of imagine most people are more or less where I am technically but unaware of the tab details - when in reality they are probably all over in terms of experience and ability. Thanks for the insight - it’s thought provoking.
Excellent!
This has become my new favorite channel. Thanks for the great lessons!
Well thank you! Delighted to read this, you kind of made my day. Cheers 🍻
The P90s sound wonderfully...
Yes they were my pick too 🙌
🎶
Great tone!
I did my best, but in reality recording resonators acoustically is a bit of a mystery to me!
Maybe the most haunting and soulful piece of music ever composed. Beautifully illustrated here by you sir.
It really is a classic. Like all great music I find it gets better the more time you spend with it as well. Cheers Stephen 🍻
@@JeremyJames_studio Agree 100%! I love both the original and Cooder’s version.
Very nice! 👍
Lovely stuff - thanks !! You should have a listen to Catfish Keith’s version of this… it’s his own take on it, but it is incredible, especially the live versions! Played on a baritone tricone - wonderful stuff.
Yes yes I remembered to have a listen - loved it! 😊
@@JeremyJames_studio I’m actually off to see him tonight in the UK!
Maybe I’ll just to fultons point and do a deal to learn this.
It would be the wise decision mate - especially if you don’t have a printer for the TAB!
So wonderful. Was waiting Jeremy!
Happy to hear that Pete. Hope all is well mate.
It’s going well! How long have you been playing Jeremy?
@@petestern3639 well Pete - been awhile I suppose 35 years? But in reality like most players - most of that is on a plateau!!
I think you should do the original too it’s so classic

Thank you

Now i can play it proper
You bet Bruce! And you don’t need to take a haircut on the lesson either 😂
Ahhhhhhhhh❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
🍻
My god your brilliant. Unfortunately slide is not for me. I bought a really nice set and they just sit there.
Thanks for the nice comment - regarding your slides just sitting there…did you give yourself some time to get used to it? Everyone sounds bad at the start! And did you set up your guitar to make it a bit easier to slide? 🤔
@@JeremyJames_studioI don’t even know how to set up my guitar in the manner your talking about.
@@licksnkicks1166right- basically you need a bit of extra tension on the strings - so heavier strings, 11s at least, and perhaps higher action so further distance from the strings to the neck. Strings that are slightly heavier will raise the action so that might be all you need to do for a start!
@@JeremyJames_studioI am not capable of 11’s broken fingers and arthritis. 10’s is the highest that I would be comfortable with. This is a whole other kettle of fish. There’s so much to learn. My life is too short! It’s 8 am and I am trying to squeeze in an hour if practice before I have to start my day.
Free publicity!!!!!
I know! Didn’t get a whisper of thanks from them either 😆
@@JeremyJames_studio Anyway i appreciated your choices on your channel. Not usual strings in France, maybe i'm not so curious :)
@@Methilde I don’t think they’re common strings anywhere - but they’re super good. Another thing is I just leave em on. I literally don’t change them! I guess I will eventually, but I’ve had them on for about nine months now and haven’t changed them yet!
@@JeremyJames_studio Thanks, i think i gonna try, which ones could you recommand me, playing mostly Blues/rock on a Les Paul ?
A woman named Lily Lafontane still live here?
Ha! That’s in the movie isn’t it? Where exactly - I can’t recall 🤔
Very nice! 👍 ❤❤
Not to long now then 😊😅😅
You're not going to believe this Bruce...but I just uploaded the guide...better late than never!
Sounds amazing!
Slow the fuk down bruh
You can just picture Keith saying to Ry take off the low D string.
Can just picture Keith saying Ry take the low D off.
Great video! About the "feature not a bug" thing: I read somewhere that the infinite creates a regular AND a reverse copy of the freezed sound-bite, which would explain the kind of sound it spits out and why you can't simply change it via tone print or a firmware update.
Is that so? I hadn’t heard that before, but it would certainly explain that kind of layered flange!
Fantastic tone! And I can close my eyes and hear Blind Willie Johnson. Your phrasing and dexterity with the slide is amazing!
Too kind, thanks 🙏- seems like the sound of the canvas sheet blowing in the background didn’t distract you then!
@@JeremyJames_studio No I didn’t even notice it!
11/10 for setting Jeremy!!! I expected Woody Guthrie to stroll past any second 🤣
Cheers Neal - did see some old guy in the vicinity, think it was my dad though!
@@JeremyJames_studio 🤣
What version of the GE-7 is that? (Made in Malaysia or one of the older ones?) The made in Malaysia ones are supposed to be much lower noise. There's also mods for older GE-7's to remove the noise and increase headroom.
It’s a made in Taiwan version - pretty old. The mod is possible but living in hong kong makes organising /postage a little too complicated~!
Thanks! This is the video that I was searching for, the paraeq really worth the money!
That’s great - I was hoping someone found the comparison useful. Really highlights the difference. Apparently analogueman do a mod for the boss. That would be great as I actually prefer the sliders. 😅
Yeahhhhhhhhhhh watch this everyday thanks
Got some of it down really going mad over this been humming this for years
There’s something about this melody… I really gets into the bones, doesn’t it. 😆

No overdriven tones?
Not really - just crunch. It’s as heavy as I go!
Amazing!
🙏
Hi Jeremy, thanks for your videos, especially the tele comparison. In here seems to me that there is too much gain (clipping) or in other word no enough headroom in the tracks.
Hi! Hmm wasn’t clipping during recording and there’s always limiting on the mixbus - were you getting overs on your set up? 🤔
No I was just observing the waveform on your daw.
I've used the wrong word, it is not clipping It is about headroom
@@podfigooh right - had a look just now and it look likes it’s peaking at -3db. Fine from the looks of it. More often I’m hitting 0.5 db on a 2-bus. Anyway….thanks for listening
