That tricky lick at bar 34 that's difficult to access on the telecaster sounds like an Arlen Roth harmonica style slide lick. He worked a great deal on this film and may have played these licks instead of Ry Cooder. Great video thanks for posting it.
Cheers, Steve. I never thought Arlen Roth’s playing made it on the movie but you never know eh. That lick kind of has me baffled to be honest. As far as I can tell it’s impossible to reproduce it on a tele. Maybe you can play it on strat. Or maybe I just need to practice more! But honestly I just can’t figure it out w/ fingers then slide. This sounds bang on!! This duel was one of the reasons I picked up the guitar. Question about string gauges , I normally play slide in open E with a pretty standard setup and 11-46 strings, what are you using for the open D? Your technique is cracking by the way!
Cheers Barry - yeah so with the strings, I tabbed and practiced this with 12-52 elixirs. Just before recording I switched to a new set of flat wound strings - ry cooder style. But they were 11-49. I really noticed two things after switching. 1/ the lower strings (4,5,6) were much better behaved and 2/ the 1st and 2nd, but mostly the first string, lost quite a bit of tension which made the call and response part a bit harder to play. I was going to switch the strings again to a set of 12-52s but just made do. It worked out in the end I suppose. I think if you were in open E, as opposed to open D some of the tension/stiffness would return to the first string but I do prefer a 12 on top. It’s a pity you can’t custom make your sets of strings - in fact I think you can - forget the name of the company though! Sorry for the long answer but you caught at a time when I’ve thinking a lot about strings!
Hi Jakob - you mean the title track from the soundtrack? Ry Cooders take on the Robert Johnson song? Not sure if all the singing would make it difficult to do or not? Maybe I could pull the cool guitar lines out and look at those 🤔
Time wise I’m thinking it was his coodercaster with the leopard print pickguard. Late 80s that seems to be on everything. Sounds like the tones from get rhythm which was the same sort of time in which he definitely used that guitar. And what a sound!!
Hi Pete, yeah sure. I was actually going to write a blog post on it. But essentially it's all on the hx stomp. Then the space / room is all in post. If you have a stomp I can share the preset I made with you?

Think they were 11-49 Tobin, elixir strings. Definitely not the flatwounds that are now on most of my guitars. Action a bit higher than normal but not too much!
Hi Jeremy, you don't have many tutorials but like always, this playthrough/tutorial is absolutely topspot. Just like your playing. Quality above quantaty must be your middle name ;) . And I mean in "grade of lapsteel sound"? And for example compared with this sound: ruclips.net/video/dtq-IxssbLQ/видео.html&ab_channel=EmeraldCityGuitars
Cheers for the kind words Johan - appreciate it. Your question is a good one, and I’d like to know the answer myself! Bit hard for me judge at this stage as I’ve never played the old supro pickups but more than that, I’ve been trying to dial in the ‘duel’ sound since changing the pickups so I haven’t really played them clean!. I’m working on another song now that will be completely clean so I’ll be very interested to see how they go.
