    Question, I was diagnosed with AuDHD a year after I had graduated college. Meaning that my entire left I had gone unnoticed and undiagnosed (I come from a brown Family). I have no academic records from primary or middle school, just high school and college reports. My biggest concern is that I had better grades than most people in my class (both secondary and college) and my gpa is pretty competitive. This was because my proffs gave us 2-3 hours for a 70 question exam, so my ADHD never really posed a problem ( I had enough time to hyper fixate, get distracted,walk around for 20 min (really a bathroom break), repeat). I can't do that on the mcat, obviously. Any way I can possible get accommodations under these conditions, or should I not try and just get prescribed meds and hope for the best?

    Working on my application for accommodations now & it is so overwhelming. I really feel this process is discriminatory in & of itself.. like how are you going to justify placing additional barriers for people with disabilities trying to get the accommodations they are legally entitled to??? What motivates me is taking just one step, sometimes literally, eg to go running, as motivation follows action. With ADHD meds I have energy so I use this to take any first action I can and which will contribute to the task I wanna get done. If it’s cleaning my action is to go into the area that needs cleaned and stand there with a brush or whatever, forcing myself to take in the mess. After a while somewhere from the depths comes a first swipe of the brush … then a second, etc, etc. Before long the job is done and I let me ADHD brain go do whatever it wants for a while. It doesn’t need any motivation to sit for hundreds (literally!) of hours on RUclips. If only I were able to direct that focus and energy! With a few hints and tips and meds, it’s just a little easier! Keep trying folks, find what works for you! 💪

I made this video largely because I was struggling to motivate myself to study human anatomy. It’s a dagger Cus I want to be a doctor but it’s so difficult to memorize things! That being said, I also realized my meds weren’t working too well so that is being sorted now. Also therapy has really helped me with these sorts of issues!! diet and exercise are crucial to my lifestyle and honestly, when I was living in dorms, I had the shittiest diet (basically frozen supermarket made food) and I was so foggy most of the time it's unreal. Now I am very careful with what I eat (mostly low carb diet) and I also try to at the very least take walks outside (I luckily live in a country where it's not freezing outside that much during the winter) and i have more good days than bad days, which means i don't have that many obstacles if i want to be productive.

    • @brendanlazar
      @brendanlazar Год назад

      That’s good thank you for sharing! What does your diet usually consist of? Any specific meals you make or have? Scrambled eggs and pork with rice are my only foods I am eating right now during my degree Cus they are fast and easy to make 😅 but my adhd dish selection is a bit limited because of this lol. I need to branch out into more healthy easy to cook foods

    • @dreambrush7251

      @@brendanlazar My repetitive foods generally consist of Greek yogurt with olives as starter then I eat some kind of meat with veg. Today I had roasted chicken drumsticks with stir fry peppers, onions, green beans and peas with a leafy salad on side. Other times I do pizzas with almond crust and I put as many veg as I can. I also make my own desserts just so I can still enjoy sweets but without the sugars, few weeks ago I had homemade cheesecake and served it with berries, which was pretty nice 👌 also if I'm not in mood to cook, I grab a protein bar. (yes, I could stay here all day and enumerate all kinds of foods I cook and eat since cooking is my special interest and I stay home most of the time lol) Scrambled eggs with rice and pork sound pretty nice! I also try to incorporate eggs into my diet, mostly when I make soup, I boil water, add a chicken or veg broth, then mix eggs and spices in it. I generally do this to also get water intake since I struggle with drinking enough water. Other easy cooking at home stuff can be stir fry veg with chopped cubes of meat of your choice. You could either chop fresh veg and meats yourself or buy directly frozen veg or meat already chopped (the quality and the nutrients should be the same as fresh.. i think lol) Also Merry Christmas :) hope you have a good time despite the hardships of the semester (which good luck!)

    My setup is: two monitors (monitor and laptop). On laptop (on right side) i put first google calendar with 3 days optin to show, and Pomofocus half screen, and second halft notepad with big font to write something if needed. On calendar you can mark some basic things every day that you do, like wake up, go to bed, and then when to eat, so you know in any moment what to do and what you didn't done, and in the end when you need to go somewhere and similar. It is also good feature to enable showing lighter color on events that is passed (in settigns you can select that). When it's time for dinner let's say, you click on dinner event in calendar and it popups, and there you can wrote something like "do some exercises, then eat" and every day when you click on it you will know what to do. So for me google calendar is first thing to check, and when I click on event it will popup and say something like "turn on Pomofocus, drink wather, study". That really helps a lot. On main monitor I can work, but on right side laptop's screen is where I see what to do and only thing that I need to focus every day is to check google calendar and be sure I put pomofocus and notepad, and everything that is in my events that is written what to do when you popu the event. In Pomofocus I put about 8 block /task with / 1h per block (2x30 mintues) and tryting to work at last 1 hour before break. I don't write what to do in pomo because everything is in calendar, I just count how many hours I spend focused (that includes following google calendar, not just learning but also habits like if you click on event and it's said "exercises then learn", so it's not 100% learning), tasks are named like "Block 1 (first hour active), Block 2 (second hour active).. ). Without pomo if you see it's 2PM and you didn't done anything you think it's too late to do now anything and skip all day, but with pomo you focus on how many hours did you cont in pomo app, not what time is it. Last thing, most of the times I can't work If I hear people walking or talking, so I put my headphons and play some focus music with very low volum, I put it in my google calendar to remind me. Notifications and alarms to do something didn't work for me. Also I don't use any medication. If you are interested to test this method too, let me know, I could provide you more details. But for me this is the only option to focus and get thigns done, and I did tried many things.

    Thanks for sharing <3 And makes me wonder why and when you switched to Vyvanse. And I got diagnosed pretty early (with 10) as well and am a girl. My emotional dysregulation, RSD and impulsivity were so much through the roof the school I attended that time recommended for me to go to a psych ward. As a kid, I had no idea what that meant and why they'd do that to me, but in the end, yeah, it was good ol' ADHD. Here in Germany, some institutes etc. still seemed to know about the emotional dysregulation DSM-3 part, so that probably saved me from a misdiagnosis with bipolar and/or borderline. - Also didn't help that seemingly everyone in my family has ADHD, so we all thought all this stuff was normal and it was apparent all our lives that we struggles way more for some reason (that, again, we thought was just normal). I got Medikinet at first (our Concerta here, kind of) and it helped a ton, but the comedown (and I didn't get a booster) and appetite suppression and weight loss was so bad it got critical for me x-x So we stopped it, thought I'd grow out of it by 18 (why was obv. not the case as most know nowadays) and then we forgot about the ADHD. - I got diagnosed with around 10, like I said and am 28 now and want to find a psychiatrist and starts meds again (hopefully Vyvanse) x-x I never worked, never really did anything with my life, have issues with my impulsivity, severe executive dysfunction nowadays, still cry easily and am not the gifted kid anymore I was back then and have been somewhat depressed (worse than ever) for years now. Hope getting o meds again around 18 years later will help me out a great deal :D

      Hi sorry for the late reply! So for the excel spreadsheet I believe it can be a big distraction too. Excel has too many functions that aren’t super worth knowing but as long as you are using it to write down your weekly/daily hours it will help. You can probably also use a journal or something else that works, if it works better for you. I used excel because I have a lot of experience with it due to my research project but again I don’t think it’s super necessary if you can find something that works. Excel is unfortunately not super accessible

      For the "good feeling" I confirm that I almost never feel it, most of the time I'll even feel bad because it took me way too much time to do this task and I feel like crap for taking so much time, so I just do less and less. I'm not diagnosed yet, but I have a test in a week. I'm kinda worried because I'm in France, and I know how ADHD is not really recognised here. I spent a year an hour north-west of Toronto last year for my grade 11, and I really hope I'm gonna be able to come back, for the school system, the health care, the people, the weather, and so much more

    I just got my answer back from AAMC & they didn't give me any extra time even though I had a really, really great & detailed personal statement that had exactly what they were saying to put in it plus what I researched & an ADHD diagnosis, all my providers' notes, a letter from my therapist, and a letter from my university about my accommodations, but they told me that I didn't have "enough evidence" it would take me longer?? So now I'm not sure what to do. I tried to take a full length test with normal time and I just ended up having a panic attack so now that I've trauma dumped... help plz lol. If you have ANY tips PLEASEEEE let me know

      That sucks!! Sorry to hear. The only thing I can think of is submitting an appeal/repeal with new evidence. From what I know, new evidence must be new reports or other documents from different evaluators and/or doctors. I havent done an appeal or repeal but I really considered doing it so looked into what you need for it. And as far as I’m concerned the only way they would approve is if you have new evidence. It can’t come from the same evaluator, especially, which is weird because for me I felt like it would’ve been good to get a new letter from my evaluator so she could specify my functional limitations which she didnt at first because i didnt realize I needed to sit with her and go through the MCAT documents/guides on the AAMC website on how to write the evaluation. Regardless, use the feedback they gave you and meet with a new professional to try and get new documents addressing the “flaws” in your application they said justified not giving what you asked for. It sucks but thats what I would do. Either that or try to do the test normally, which could be possible with LOTS of practice. But either way good luck! I am considering making a video on what to do in your scenario as others have commented simile things and I have some thoughts on it

    !! Notes and Corrections !! Disclaimer: I am from Canada aiming for Canadian Med schools so my experience differs from those in the US. Canada requires very competitive MCAT scores, or at least a high CARS score. Corrections: At 17:28, I mentioned that your evaluation must be current, and said that means 6 months. This is for psychiatric disabilities. For ADHD and learning disabilities, it is actually 3 years.This is according to the document, "What Does my Evaluator Need to Do?" (students-residents.aamc.org/media/8461/download). Sorry for any confusion. Make sure to reference as many resources as you can when doing your evaluation!

    Hey man just fyi tons of people with adhd, diagnosed and not, are scoring a 516 or better. Also I wouldn’t boast that when schools are denying students for any mental health reason they can

    • @bruh2263
      @bruh2263 2 года назад

      Also a 516 is not gonna guarantee you a spot of admissions into med school, so I don’t know why you are saying competitiveness is the reason.

    • @brendanlazar
      @brendanlazar 2 года назад

      Awesome that’s great tons of people are! When I wrote the MCAT I never saw many videos on people who got a high score while having ADHD, so I decided to make this video to share my experience. And boasting? I personally would not use that word… that signifies I am showing off. It is an accomplishment I am proud of getting, but like I said I wanted to share this for anyone who also has ADHD and wants to see how others with ADHD did it. Are the medical schools you are taking about US schools? And yes, I recognize a 516 is not a guarantee, as I didn’t get in in the first place. For years I always thought what would get me in was my ECs, not MCAT score or gpa. I think I didn’t get in because my application wasn’t written well enough for the Canadian med schools I applied for. If one is from the US, one might not realize but Canadian med schools have 10% acceptance rates

      I certainly didn't think he was boasting. He worked really hard to get that grade and is proud. Instead of shooting people down, maybe you should applaud them for doing well? Guess your life isn't going that well, hope things turn around for you. :)

    Hey there! You did not get into a medical school this last cycle?? Did I hear that correctly, apologies

    • @brendanlazar
      @brendanlazar 2 года назад

      Yes you heard right! I did not get in! Unfortunately in Canada the competitiveness is so high that my 516 MCAT alone was not enough to get in last year. Not getting in is more to do with the whole application itself than just MCAT score, as my MCAT is now fine and I won’t have to retake it. I am working on improving my ECs and hope to reapply with a better written application this year, as I am getting more help this time around

    I am making videos related to medicine, the MCAT, and ADHD so be sure to subscribe! This video is certainly not my best, so please check out others, particularly from my best videos playlist! Check out my latest MCAT video, How to Get MCAT Accommodations: ruclips.net/video/6dEtVLin4XY/видео.html Disclaimer: I am from Canada and only applied last cycle for two Canadian medical schools. Canadian medical schools are notoriously difficult to get in and require very good ECs on top of good MCAT scores and GPA. I believe I did not get in because my ECs need strengthening and/or I need to write the application better. I will be reapplying this year and next if needed, while doing a masters in Toronto to improve my application. I will make videos following my journey so be sure to like and subscribe! Good luck and I wish anyone success in your journey to becoming a medical doctor!! 😊

    Subscribed, thank you so much for sharing and making this content. Unfortunately I was only approved for stop the clock breaks (60 min flexible, like yours) but was not given any additional testing time (originally requested +50%). I may consider doing an appeal but that was pretty discouraging. Better than nothing though! Is there perhaps anyway you could give me some guidance on this?

    • @brendanlazar
      @brendanlazar 2 года назад

      Hi! Yes I actually am uploading a second MCAT video but this time solely on MCAT accommodations! It talks a bit about appeals and repeals about mid way through, I’m excited to share it and hopefully it is helpful! Here is the link: ruclips.net/video/6dEtVLin4XY/видео.html But I have heard that to get repeals approved, you need to have NEW documents from a DIFFERENT psych evaluator. It depends on the context on what documents you should include but I would think they should address anything you felt wasn’t expressed in the first application. Good luck!

    Finally!!! MCAT advice and strategies for people with ADHD! I've found strategies from neurotypical people were often not helpful for me because I approach testing so differently with having ADHD (especially with poor working memory and impulsive responding issues). I'm retaking my MCAT after getting a 502. This time around I was interested in getting a tutor because staying organized is such a challenge for me. What was the tutoring company you used? Also, besides Anki, do you have any more specific strategies that helped you with the Bio and Chem sections? Thank you for the video!!

    • @brendanlazar
      @brendanlazar 2 года назад

      Hi! Glad you found it helpful! I will be making more stuff related to the MCAT and ADHD soon, as it certainly is a challenge and there is a lot that I feel I have to say. For the tutor, I actually hired one off of Kijiji. She did not so much teach me things as I made her help me keep organized haha. I think she expected to teach me stuff but I wanted it more so to be like an academic strategist type help and she gladly complied. She often organized my schedule for me so I had an idea of how to proceed with content review. Asides from that, a lot of scheduling I did I took advice from the MCAT reddit (practice exams especially). For bio, I really only relied on past knowledge from my degree as it never was a huge issue for me. That said, the biochem stuff was huge and once I knew it my score jumped 10 points, so definitely focusing on the high yield content is important. But again, I cannot stress anki cards enough (especially the miles down anki deck) as it made sure that I would not forget concepts that I learned down the line, which was a huge challenge my first try at the mcat. And finally for chem, I honestly feel like I can never pin point what made it finally start working. But it was my worst section and only improved with rigorous studying, practicing, reviewing, seeing reddit if I had "no clue" on things, and so on. It was weird because after a point, I was getting questions right that I wasn't thinking I got right. So my only advice is to keep practicing and practicing. I found content review while practicing the best for chem. Hope this helps a bit!
