Part 2 : CO to LA Backcountry DISASTER Route!
This installment is over a year late - better late than never though, right? This vlog has been pieced together mostly from old iPhone footage - hence the poor image quality.
HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED: We got onto a trail that was a bit more difficult than it appeared to be on the GPS. John and I were the weaker riders on the heavier bikes in that environment. Jason (a very good rider) ended up having to help us quite a bit. This slowed us way down and put us way behind schedule. Then, a storm began to bear down on us and the clock was ticking. Around 6:30pm one of the V4's went down in rut and jammed the kickstand kill sensor in the engine. We did...

Which book is Johnny Depp reading from?
Hells Angels - Hunter S Thompson
So what was the problem with the bike(s) that you couldn’t ride it out ?
The kickstand jammed the sensor that kills the engine on one of the V4's - we took the whole thing apart but were unable to ever get the bike started again. (You never see that bike again because it took an additional 4 days before they were able to get that one out) All that happened around about 6:30pm - just as the storm was bearing down on us. We were 50 miles into backcountry at that point and way behind schedule. Once it got dark, that was it. After weighing our options - we decided to just leave all of the bikes there and get rescued as a group. We had a camel back and one granola bar between the three of us. It took 4 days for the trails to dry out enough to get anything beyond an ATV back out there.
but it i think it do 0-100km/h in same speed like horizontaly ... and same verticaly :D it have enough power so u can be rude on trotle ...but but enough to accelerate like a big truck :D:D but yea you never now if it will start whellspin or just pull ... i ride it almost daily :) winter summer doesnt matter :D
Super cool! Please do something like this at night
Got it! I will do it!
Word !!! And then another one, facing the direction you're going.
I have a 1985 XT600 in australia 😁 Mikunioz . yamaha-early-tt-xt600-mikuni-tm38-flatslide-single-carb-conversion-kit . They are in Queensland austraila and ship world wide .
I had one too. 84' and put 35k on it. Road that all over socal. Very fun bike
I have an 89
Nice!
Hope you are doing well wherever you are.
Thank you - all is well! Hopefully more content will be coming very soon
I own #600/800 of the Fasthouse Edition. An absolute stellar look on a stellar platform. My favourite bike I've ever owned.
Love my Sled!
I have a TT 600 -87😊😊
Looks like a blast from the past with now days Fun😊
I was working in Antigua in 1984 and shipped in a brand new XT600 from Miami because I had previously had an XT500 in the UK, the 600 was so much better in every way, it was class leader for some time until Honda got serious.
Dont know what kind of power your used to, but my 84 has plenty of power. And ive got a ducati monster s4r and a 93 kx500. My yamaha i took off the B.S. muffler and that really woke it up. I seen in the comments someone said replace the carb? W.T.F. little more to it. It has one carb and another that is a partial carb so to speak. A fuel metering block/ device. Never gave it much thought. Not sure youd run one somehow or have to run two carbs?? Anyway my 84 isnt a very good dirtbike. Way too heavy and soft suspension makes for the front wheel washing out on me. Thanks for ur video👍 try replacing the muffler with a better breather. When i did, it is alot different and didn't need any rejetting, seems to run cool enough and no lean spots
Thanks for the tip!
Do you think it would be a good first dual sport? Im thinking about getting one with a electric starter
I guess no one responded to ur inquiry. I live in Oregon. I've got somewhere around 20 bikes. One being a 84 xt600lc. Really, really like it. I've also got a 80' xt500. They were kind of a turd with 29 hp. The 600 has 45. Feels a world different. No comparison. I don't know what's wrong with his. He said not much power?? On the highway I cruise 70 effortlessly. And just torque it around most times. What woke mine up is taking the bullshit muffler off. After my brother ride it I asked what he thought. He said "fast as any Harley I've road" maybe a exaggeration. But a test in a magazine they had one to 115mph. How I don't know. Now as far as a dirt bike.... Well ..plenty of power, but a little porky to toss around. And the frontend will wash out on you. Maybe it's my cheap tires, but the front forks seem a little soft. If you want a dual sport that your going to do mostly off-road. Then no, there's better. But very iconic and great bikes.. hope this helps
Sorry, I missed this comment. I would agree that it would be a good first dual sport. Great bikes to learn and get comfortable on. Power is a matter of perception I suppose - I don’t love the feeling of mine on the highway but around town and in the dirt it’s a blast.
Thanks for the comments, i guess trying one would solve allot of the questions
@@tvr419 mine clocks down the highway effertlessly at 70/75 mph. There not so great in the dirt
@@tvr419 everybody brags up the old xt/ TT 500 Yamahas.. these are so much better it's not funny..
Want to buy another one
That is awesome that there is vintage desert races. It make me want to rebuilt / refit my dad’s 72 TM 400 and give it a go.
Do it!
Awesome!
Sick bike!! I have the regular desert sled and removed the cat. Can you please recommend a local tuner so that my bike doesn’t continue to run lean? I’m in SoCal.
In LA, I’d probably recommend Pro Italia. There’s a Ducati dealer in Newport Beach also. I added a T800 UpMap unit and it’s pretty easy to just dial in decat exhaust setting from your phone.
@@lonewolfsmoto thank you very much!!
I can understand I had an xt 550 Yamaha for 13 years, with front disk from the 600. Living in Greece 6 months on an island 6 months in Athens it was perfect. 93 up to 08.😊
Your right. Something about a thumper. To me, its got usable power. Power for every walk of riding. Simple to work on as well.
Uncle Rico van life!
Best people in the world right there, bikes and friends, it doesn’t get much better.
It sure doesn’t 👍
@@lonewolfsmoto for example, you could walk around the campgrounds looking for a spark plug you’d come back with 3-4 plugs a sandwich and a beer, absolutely the best folks in the world.

excellent quality of video!
Thank you 🙏
love the older bikes they are rock solid!.. i drive a Honda Xl 600 R from 1984
The best !
Love the bike and the jacket! Which brand it is if you don’t mind👍🏻
Thanks! Jacket - waxed is Iron and Resin Scout , the other is Revit Sand I believe?
The vibes in this video are so peaceful. Super enjoyable and informative video ❤❤❤ 8:56
Glad you enjoyed! 🙏
Whate state is that? I have an 89 XT 600
CA
My first bike was an 84 TT 600. 15 years old thumping all over town raising hell.
*Who makes those goggles on the second highest shelf (**1:45**)?*
What is your camera set up in this video? And great work by the way!
Thanks - this was shot with the Insta360 One RS
if the the good lord would bless me with one of these before it's too late to really enjoy it ......i'd serve the rest of my days willingly
The yamaha xt600 here in Greece and i believe in many EU countries is considered a legend. I wanted to buy a snall enduro but cause of the lacks of parts the xt here in Greece is the only valid option. Sadly most of them are torn apart, meesed with or they are turned to supermotos etc. Also the prices have rised a bit along woth the xtx660 bit still os the most valif option as a low cost, really reliable bike
👍🏻🙏🏻😀
I have a 91' XT600 and absolutely love it! Just a quick note: try sourcing the original filter cap bolts, the bottom one is really peculiar and when inserted block an oil passage. If a random bolt is used, the passage will be left open and lower the oil pressure. Ask me how I know! anyway, you made a really good deal on it! great bike that can be thrown everywhere. If it werent for the emission regulations and restrictions here in Italy, i would keep it as my only bike.
Thanks for the heads up!
Nice mood, cool spirit, clever bike. Thanks for your work on this video! With the van you have a killer combo of simplicity and authenticity. It must attract serenity! Remember your XT600 bears the engine of her dirt enduro oriented big sis, the TT600. It was not engineered for long distance full throttle in 5th gear, but for more spread usage of the range of gears: 2/3/4/5... So the 5th gear pinion & wheel are Not oversized like you would expect on an adventure long ranger. It nevertheless does the job so well it's kudos to the work of these japanese designers. But the 5th pinion is very often the first to pit & wear down on the oldest XT600 models. I would say minimum respect of the engine, oil quality and change as often as possible... I had a 1987 XT600 2KF 25 years ago, and just bought a 1984 XT600 L identical to yours as a way of stopping to miss my first big thumper so much... I am still jealous of your van though .
It’s absolutely amazing. True story about true people in untruly political world. God bless all the people involved in this video🙏🏼
Awesome vision, awesome vibe and great colour! Man, can you make some tutorial about motorcycle videography and post-production pls? 🙏🏼
I’ll do it! Got some new videos in the works
It wasn’t a 3 minute tour cuz the first minute was u riding
I just bought an 86 XT350 and I’m in love. Why? I could’ve purchased a 2023 300l or a DRZ.
Congrats! 🍾
Thinking of Buying one, i miss riding a bike and u made come to that i will buy XT600🤠
I'm really looking forward to riding back out west on my DS!
Get rid of the stock carburetor and upgrade it to something better as I have. That motor is under carbureted. It will really liven the bike up and makes it way more enjoyable to ride!
Thanks for tip! What carb did you put on?
I have a ‘84 XT 600 and the YDIS carb works perfectly. Most people do not take the time to understand how they work and how to adjust properly so they will remove and try to adapt another setup. If it is not worn out and setup properly, there is not a better, more reliable option. I have 12 off-road bikes for different purposes (and I collect them). The XT600 is one of my faves to ride. Great video BTW.
Simple bike, simple maintenance. Give it a little love and its got another 40 years in it.
Cool coool cooooool
Awesome
DUDE this event looks so rad! I gotta hit this next year cuz I finished building a 1982 XL500R this year and it would kick ass in that desert. How'd you get some of those camera shots btw? What camera setup do you have?
Dude, def come race that thing next year - you'll have a blast! And thanks for the comment! I shot this with an S5mii (all handheld - obviously), a Panasonic 50mm 1.8 and a 24 to 105 F4. And then I just stuck an Insta360 One RS on my handle bars for the race itself - nothing fancy at all👍🏼
@@lonewolfsmoto I am planning on it. I am originally from SoCal but I moved to Idaho about 3 years back. I think I'm tryna get my 89' CR250 build ready for Day in the dirt and hit this too if I can on my 82' XL500. Its about an 11 hour drive but totally worth it for sure if I camp out for a few days!
coolest video! thank you, I had a blast racing it for the first time and will be back 2024
Awesome! Yeah, def looking forward to next year!
