    Since you made this video have you been able to try the Leofoto LH-40gr geared head / ball combo ?

    • @JamesLPhoto
      @JamesLPhoto 3 дня назад

      That's an interesting option that I haven't tried. Theoretically, it should work like the AS P0 Hybrid since it is a ball head + gears above. So you can use the ball to get your rough composition and adjust the gears to fine-tune! Quick and precise. 716 grams isn't too bad for what you get. My only hesitation is that the product has been on the market for a while, and there has been an increase in quality over the last couple of years with Leofoto's products. I don't see it listed on their USA store so it may be more challenging to source. But if you pick it up, have fun with it, and I would love to hear how it works for you!

    • @corey688
      @corey688 3 дня назад

      @@JamesLPhoto I purchased the lh-40gr. It feels solid and smooth so far. Time will tell if I should have bought the g4 instead. Basically the difference is full quick movements of the ball vs dedicated up and down tilt of the g4.

    • @corey688
      @corey688 3 дня назад

      @@JamesLPhoto One thing I’ve noticed , and not sure if this is leofoto ball head thing or just on the lh-40…. When I lock the ball down it releases the fine tune drag tension adjustment on the ball. Then if you go to adjust the pan knob, inadvertently your finger touches the fine tune drag knob which is free flowing and will easily be moved. Then when you go back to unlocking the ball your previously set drag tension is different and could possibly be fully open ( if your finger inadvertently turned the dial tension knob that way ,) making your camera subject to falling down on a ball head that’s open with no tension. Bad design - or are all ball heads like this ? ( this is my first ball head )

    Wow these are cool photos. My favorite is the sunrays through the fog and the flowers being highlighted. 😊 I love taking photos of plants and trees with my phone everytime I visit a park. Truly one of the best videos in forest photography so gar and I have seen a lot of them. The analytic approach may not be for everyone, but it's the fastest way to success. I subscribed right away. Great work, really beautiful photography!

    I live in the Ozark mountains and have always struggled with how to make something of the forest, usually defaulting to small stuff and macro photos. I love these tips on how to look for good shots amidst the chaos. One critique on your video is that your zoom out transitions on your stills blanks them with just a fraction of a second to pause and look at your composition. Distracting - skip the zoom out and just present the image for the same amount of time. I've subbed and look forward to more of your videos. Thank you!

      Thanks for the feedback! I appreciate the note about the zoom transitions-I'll definitely keep that in mind for future videos. I've never been to the Ozark mountains. I only know of the Netflix show that takes place there (even though it's filmed in Atlanta, GA 🫤). I agree, there's nothing wrong with macro or small scenes in the forest. In fact, I love that those intimate moments are almost always accessible, no matter where you are.

    Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park (north of Orick), James Irvine Trail, late 1990. Started at visitor station before sunrise. Extremely dense fog. In a very old grove of redwoods fog started lifting. The base of the fog was below the lowest limbs of the trees. Bare tree trunks disappeared into into the thick fog ceiling. Seemed as if we were in a great cathedral. Looking forward the trail ran up a hill and disappeared into the fog. A haunting dream like memory that only me my wife share. Thanks for taking your time to share not only your techniques but the awe and wonder of the redwoods.

    Nice tips and images. I generally agree with the notion of leaving the camera in the bag while you explore and connect with the location. However, you may stumble across ideal light and conditions that make you want to grab your camera and take a photo. I appreciate you taking a few intimate scenes. That's not, how woodland-photography works. You need time in advance to decide, what it is about the forest that resonates with you. Analizing images taken by skilled forest photographers is important too. It's all part of the game and equally important to your images. It may be not for everyone, but so is woodland photography itself.

    Great summary of all the tripod heads. I've been considering the Arca-Swiss Cube, but the D4 looks like a potential option as well now after your review as I was concerned about not being able to make quick adjustments on the Cube. In an unrelated question, it looks like you have reflective tape on your tripod legs? I've been using a 3m reflective tape for mine, but the tape is a bit too stiff and tends to unwrap. Which brand did you end up using?

    • @JamesLPhoto
      @JamesLPhoto Месяц назад

      I'd definitely recommend trying to get your hands on both the Cube and D4 to see how they feel in person if you can. If you can swing it upfront, it might be worth purchasing both with the idea of testing them and returning one, assuming the store has a good return policy. As for the tripod tape, I'm sorry, but I can't seem to find the product link in my order history! It was almost a decade ago. However, I do remember that it was a highly rated glow-in-the-dark tape on Amazon. The trick for having it last all these years was definitely the clear tape on top to seal it in. I'd recommend trying that with whatever tape you choose.

    Great info. I'm hauling off to an Everest Base Camp Trek shortly. I generally do not have a focus on landscapes during my travels but in this case I want to be more prepared. I am seriously weight conscious since its my back carrying the weight for the 17 day trek. If you were to take one wide angle lens with you -- which would it be? 16-35 f4, 16-35 f2.8, 12-24 F4 or other? I have a Sony A7RIII. Last, and I know this is a nutty question, but if you looked at your Lightroom stats, which focal length do you think you use most when in mountains?

    • @JamesLPhoto
      @JamesLPhoto 5 лет назад

      That sounds amazing! I would take the 16-35 f4. Sure, there may be times when you want wider, but those are also times when you would use a tripod to get closer, which you probably won't be doing a lot of since you'll be moving through the landscape so much. I'm on Nikon and if I was doing that trek I would take 16-35 f4 and 28-300.
