1976 Mighty Tonka Dump Truck Restoration
oh wow. My church has one of these, it's probably 20 years old. only gets used once a week but I didn't realize how much crap can build up in them. Looks like a good weekend project for me
Nicely done! A couple years ago I bought one at a pawnshop for $15. I work at a custom cabinet shop and use it for assembling cabinets. Its fantastic, adjusting the air pressure changes the torque, which is great for driving different sized screws. Today you can find used, well made air tools and nail guns in good condition for at a great price thanks to everyone getting all hopped up in the cordless tool market. Cordless tools are over rated lol.
What medium do you use for your sandblaster?? I have one that's mostly complete, and in better condition than yours was. It's newer I think, as the wheels have white plastic hubs and single piece tires. The lever is broken off, so I need to braze on a piece to attach the rod to the boom. It's also missing the hose, ladder and hydrant.
Bravo,Maestro!
I have a storage unit that was given to me and the walls has shelves of these and Tonka toys
It looks great and you did a wonderful job restoring it as well!!!! I enjoyed your video so I gave it a Thumbs Up
Personally the decals would pissed me right off. I would have done better ones. (If it was for a collection or to sell)
I just came across your video of the tonka firetruck restoration.Great job. I was wondering what kind of screws are those that you used or are they soe type of rivet.THANKS
The screws are used to secure very thick architectural plans together when staples wont work. It's called a Binding Post and can be found at Lowe's or Home Depot. The ones I used were aluminum as I couldn't find them in steel but they worked perfectly. The ones I used were manufactured by a company called Everbilt. I looked everywhere for the original rivet type but couldn't find them anywhere. I appreciate the question and the kind words. Thanks For Watching!
Beautiful job!
Speaking as a Canadian, I have _never_ seen Nylint toys in person (as a child or later). Tonka completely dominated the market for better-quality vehicles and construction equipment; other firms made cheap plastic toys. If Nylint had a retail presence here, it was very small.
I worked in the tool repair industry for around 30 years, 8 years as a repair mechanic, the rest as shop manager. I am factory certified by dozens of tool manufacturers, including Sioux Tool, since 1992. If you are repairing your own equipment, you can get by with your mistakes. For the short time I watched this video, I see 2 mistakes I would not tolerate of anyone working for me. Always replace bearings when a tool is being repaired. NEVER sandblast the motor housing of a rotory tool. You run the risk of not getting all of the sandblasting medium from inside the tool, thus damaging motor parts.
What type of o-ring should I use and where should I source them if I did something like this for a old model where parts are no longer available?
Grainger or McMaster-Carr off the top of my head
Thanks for the comment and the advice. I will definitely take it into consideration. Thanks for watching!
Its like my childhood gets a whole new life put back into it. Much appreciated
What dozer is the Tonka t9 based on?
I'm actually not sure. Thanks for watching!
Nice video. Would have liked to see you remove the tank. Looks too complicated for me.
Exelente

“Luckily it hit me in the face” we are officially friends lol. I wish I had a camera going last week… a rebellious snap ring went flying at Mach 10 speed, ricocheted off of something about 6 feet away, and somehow landed in the palm of my other hand while I contemplated my choices
Hi, friend! Please tell me what instruments you were talking about? 19 minutes 47 seconds you say a special rivel tool is needed here
Pin Tonka Rivet Tool.
Nice job....Psyco music at the end. Lol
Beautiful peace considering what you had to start with
Beautiful job on it
Thank you! 😊
i have one taken apart.will get back on it soon.vidieo very helpful on the buck and boom.thank you
Good luck!
Thank you! I just took one home from work that has a leak. I think it is the .70 cent seal between heating tank and holding tank
I have a 75 on the way. I think besides the decal it's the same dump truck. Thanks for this. Do you restore for others? Ty again.
Yes I do!

Great video. I’m very new to the obsession of restoring old Tonka toys. I’m still learning. Any websites, blogs, groups, etc that I should know about? I have a lot of questions as someone just starting out. Thanks.
Not that I know of
I'm currently working on this. I wish you would have showed the disassembly of the crane section, but awesome job overall. I only hope mine turns out nearly as well!
Very informative video! I have been eanting to restore my own Tonkas. BUT, I have a Question: Do these tonka trucks, dozers, etc. lose value when restoration is done? Wouldn't it be better to totally restore one that others would consider an eye sore? Thanks.
I'm from Brazil and I restored an identical one, would you have the sticker file to make available for printing?
GRAET JOB KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK
uhh what year is it?!
No clue
I have MANY hours running one of those, pushed a lot of gravel and dirt with mine when I was a kid! loved that thing!
I had one just like it., and later a black truck. That also had a motor cycle, and wheels you could change.
Good job, the decals turned out great.
Imagine seeing the very same toy you owned and played with 58 years ago as a lad only aged 7 being restored to its original new condition. 👏 ❤ ☺️ Your videos bring such joy to my heart and while I watch them then I forget about all the troubles in the world, all the stresses in my life and all the worry and concerns about my future. Thank you mate and God bless ya from this ol ExPat Yank. 👍

Looks good and you did a great job restoring it! Why didn't you use filler in the bed?? It shows real bad that you didn't do it I enjoyed your video and I gave it a Thumbs Up
I like the new yellow color U used & it is remarkable on the final results - as it is VERY NICE - Big Boy Toy Now👍👍
Thanks for the comment. I actually purchased the wrong color and didn't realize until the paint dried that it was a little lighter than Tonka's original color. I was happy with the results though. Thanks for watching! cheers!
These are fantastic toys! I always wanted this particular model when i was a kid! Never did get one. Im now thinking of trying to get it just out of nostalgia? Am i crazy but i actually liked the pre restoration condition! Although i was impressed with the end result.
Thanks for the comment. I liked the patina also, but this toy's base was in really bad shape. I may do one, one day, where I leave the patina and just clean up the rust and clear coat it. Thanks for watching! Cheers.
What is the name of the rust remover you use that strips paint also? Lol. Seriously though.😊
ZEP - I use it when I suspect lead in the paint (you don't want to sandblast that), or if the paint may come off in large chips in my blasting cabinet. Per the manufacturer, it should NOT be used on marble, terrazzo, travertine, natural stone, chrome, stainless steel, brass, or Corian. I will usually use Evapo-Rust (acid free) - due to safety, ease-of-use and reusability. (ZEP is reusable also but gets pretty nasty eventually) Thanks for the question and thanks for watching!
@onemansgarage6203 cool. You are welcome, and I used evapo-rust myslef.
I will tell you that it is important to have the part COMPLETELY submerged in the liquid or the chemical action will etch a line in the part, right at the spot where the air meets the top of the liquid. You can see this on the Craftsman square I cleaned up for a friend. Learned my lesson.
@onemansgarage6203 I've done that too, extremely hard and time consuming to fix, lol
Wow! It turned out great! Beautiful job!
Thanks for the nice comment and thanks for watching!
good job bro 👍👍👍

Хорошая работа!👍 Понравилось!
A very nice dozer, just like all the vintage toys. I think toys were much better back then than they are now.
Thanks for the comment! Take it from me, the toys were much much better back then. Even from 1970s to the 1980s, there is a huge difference in quality of both materials and craftsmanship. Thanks for watching! Cheers
So shiney and near new! I like the red/black contrast!
