Just a quick video about some highlights for me from the past year. There were way more games than I found time to play so there is more than likely a few missing here that otherwise would on this list!

    For me vesperia is just the worst. I played Abyss, berseria and arise. Abyss is great while berseria and arise are good in term of story. Combat of course the newer one is the better one. Vesperia is annoying for me. The character that isnt consistent, they also cares wayy too much about estelle. 30 hours in and all of it is just follow estelle's order, after that? the story is getting "good" but they ruined it by using so much deus ex machina. The gameplay is old tales but annoying, fatal arts that pop randomly and you need to stay still to activate it, weapon that gives skill, bad overlimit mechanic, enemies using mystic arts like its base artes, and many more.

    16:00 I'm confused? You simply switch characters by switching who's in slot 1 on the party menu. You can do it as soon as you get Estelle. This works the same for basically every game in the series I believe The item you mentioned is specifically for switching characters mid-combat, you can switch any time outside of combat

    • @DastyDan
      @DastyDan 6 месяцев назад

      Yeah I think I got myself confused there tbh. I didn't remember the game telling me how to play as someone else so looked it up online and found info about that item first. I must have misinterpreted what it was saying and assumed you needed it to switch at all!

    I've played Arise on the PS5, and Hearts R on the Vita, and loved them both. Currently playing through Graces f on the PS3 and am really enjoying it so far as well. I've got a number of others still to play: Symphonia Chronicles, Xillia, and Xillia 2 on the PS3; Vesperia, Berseria, and Zestiria on the PS5 (using PS4 backwards compatibility); and just today got in Abyss for the 3DS. Easily my favorite JRPG series, and am looking forward to trying out all the other titles!

    Something I think almost everyone is missing about the combat: It IS turn-based inspired. Compared to games like DMC, Bayonetta, Astral Chain; the enemies in FF16 telegraph and even literally announce their attacks. After an attack, they give you a clear window to react. The enemies don't really speed up the combat loop until late game, so to me the turn-based element was there in spirit.

  • @letsplayg
    @letsplayg 8 месяцев назад

    If you want to play them for the story then symphonia, eternia, abyss, vesperia and berseria and imo even phantasia is a decent story keeping in mind it's the first one and for gameplay I would say xillia 1-2, arise and graces f, vesperia (slow start though before fun combat) and tales of the abyss, I personally like symphonia's battle system but I am super biased towards symphonia so objectively I would call it outdated, it's kind of like tales of the abyss but a bit "older/step behind". Personally I think they all have their charm but I did not like berseria, zestiria their gameplay at all it was too "automatic/easy" compared to the others, graces F somewhat the same but it felt better somehow, if I put up the difficulty in graces/got further into the game I had to actually think about when to block etc so it felt more rewarding while berseria and zestiria felt like I didn't have to think at all in battle after the first few minutes and rarely ever died.

    I see "Tales" I just click. I haven't touched Arise yet due to waiting for a super cheap price. Also, I have a slight annoyance with the changes. Beseria technically very dark tone in the story line I did like it. Symphonia is far more memorable for me, but that is more nostalgia from the GC era. Vesperia was my first real experience and my enjoyment of the Tales of series. I will stand by Vesperia as the best. Zestiria has its "haters", but one can argue the opening theme is the best of the tales of series. Tales of the Abyss was another enjoyable experience for me and I can also say that it's intro theme is a strong 2nd and I expect a "debate" I don't feel like to go in.

    I haven’t played all of them but my thoughts: Abyss, Xillia 2 and Berseria nailed the balance of the darkness with the light. Also very compelling entries. For someone looking for beginner friendly instalments maybe Arise, Xillia 1 or Symphonia. All offer a thoroughly complete story. Finally Graces F, Vespiria or Zestiria if you want something softer for the palette and more party focused and character driven. Haven’t played any of the others unfortunately. 😢

    I've played Arise and Berseria and they're fantastic RPGs. Combat in the games are very enjoyable and there's at least one character I feel like everyone would enjoy playing. I like Berseria's vast array of equipment and builds, but this also kinda hurts the game considering how you can easily get like 15 of the same equipment piece, which you're forced to sell, dismantle, or let clog up your inventory.

    Idk why everyone love symphonia so much imo it just aged horribly, it just feels like the more clunky version of Vesperia, kind of how Zestiria is the Clunky version of Berseria allthough I didnt mind it that much. I think Zesteria on its own is a fine game but its story gets more intresting when you know of Berseria, and sure the connection isnt huge but just by it being there Zesterias world feels more realized.

    • @omaymah1301
      @omaymah1301 6 месяцев назад

      When i replayed Zesteria there are many subtle details here and there that connect so well to berseria that i believe they already were planning for berseria along with zesty from the get go. So yeah playing berseria before zestiria makes the experience much better. Zestiria relying on vagueness and ambiguity in its storytelling might have resulted in many people not enjoying it, but it actually is very solid when played with berseria in mind.

    I've been a bit hesitant to getting into old series like these, hell it took me years till I properly played a Mario game due to the legacy being so overwhelming, its also the same reason why I still flake out of trying Final fantasy, though after finally playing the demo to Arise after my curiousity got the better of me, I actually enjoyed it from what I can remember, the only thing I found inherently bad about the game/demo was the characters over talking and just rambling through the combat, I plan on actually getting Arise after my experience with it, though while I want to play other tales games outside of it, the rambling and squaking throughout Arise left me concerned the other games have similar if not worse issues

    • @DastyDan
      @DastyDan Год назад

      Yeah I totally get that. I think there are options for that in the options in most of the games for battle bark volume, because it can get very overwhelming at times lol after a while you kinda get used to it, but it's definitely a distracting element of the combat

  • @turquoisemoon3654
    @turquoisemoon3654 Год назад

    I admit, all Tales games share some of that "generic" cliche or trope or whatever- which gamers with a lot of experience might point out. But I think that all games have to have some generic element as they follow trends established by previously successful games OR the preference of the game communities associated with each game. Each game has a GENRE- and genre restricts the structures and features- so that's what I mean by the "generic element" being inherent in ALL games. FF has its formula, Trails of Cold Steel have them (they also have the standard sauna scenes, ha ha) and Genshin? If you're familiar with donghua... and all those CG releases that Chinese animation is setting up as a trend in the current years, the aesthetics of Genshin comes as no surprise. Those who claim it plagiarized Zelda... that's a VERY odd way of putting it- because coming from the animation side, I've seen enough anime and read enough manga, manhua, donghua to know- all these games borrow elements from each other. UNlike OTHER Tales games, though, that borrow some elements from Square Enix's FF in terms of themes or story lines- Symphonia and Arise did A LOT of that (the two worlds divided and conspiring to destroy the other)- Zestiria is the ONLY story I know that's original on the game and anime side. Demonic antiheroes... rebellious knights and outcasts... traumatized protagonists with revenge issues... all that's been manufactured gazillions of times each season in BOTH anime and games. But Zestiria's theme stands alone in both anime and gaming literature- I mean who'd dare represent the other side that's quite taboo to speak of now? The popular trend is turning demons into heroes, rebels into saviors... but here you have a classic ruin geek trying to reconcile his personal dreams with the larger crisis and realizing in his own way... asking help from "above" isn't such a bad thing. When it comes to its use of female characters, I have some issues with using "naive females" as "comic relief" which is quite true with Vesperia's Estelle. I think Zestiria sacked that image without going overboard the way Berseria did in masculinizing a female protag, then underdressing her to say she's still feminine. The use of "trauma" to justify being "possessed" with demons just paints a character as spiritually and mentally weak... enough to push her into "berserk" mode- which is kinda... cliche as that is the standard formula for ALL revenge stories and soaps- as taught in scriptwriting textbooks. As for Zestiria, yeah, maybe not everyone is hyped over the lore of angels and seraphim, given that this narcissistic generation ironically hates the narcissism of Christianity and doesn't bother to read on it. But even that is quite scary if one realizes that most of the elements in Zestiria have been taken from the Book of Enoch, and all the Pre-Christian literature that's actually more fascinating than the overused/over-recycled Scandinavian and Nordic myths you see in almost EVERY fantasy game/anime out there.

    Can confirm Symphonia is great. Vesperia is good but it kind of drops the ball on its story. It sets up a great moral conflict between Yuri/Flynn and Yuri/Phaeroh but never capitalizes on it. Yuri is the main character so everything he does is right. Zestiria definitely has a weaker story individually. But looking at it together with Berseria I think it does a lot right. Trope subversions work because other stories play tropes straight, and a lot of moments in Berseria hit much better because of setup in Zestiria.

But the way you describe it in the other games makes it sound like you were playing with Semi-Auto controls. I played, in order: Abyss (on the 3DS), Berseria, Vesperia and Arise (all on PC) Overall, Vesperia was my least favorite, but that doesn't mean it's bad. It's more like a 8.5/10 for me. Abyss is a solid 9, Berseria is a 10 and Arise is also a 10. Vesperia had something the others didn't, though: Yuri was voiced, in Japanese, by the same guy who voiced Mista from JoJo Golden Wind, which I was watching at the time, so I instantly felt "connected" to the main character thanks to that alone lol.

    Something I’d love to see is a remaster of Xillia 1 & 2. They were amazing on PS3 back in the day, and they have redone Symphonia a few times, so why no love for Xillia :(
