Right now, I am relaxing outside on a hammock drinking a beer wasting my time watching this video instead of finishing the masterpiece Mass Effect Trilogy. You know what was a real waste of time? Having a 7 year great marriage blow up in my face after a miscarriage while I was busy taking on more responsibility working 80 hours a week and responsible for a 160 person organization. I don’t count enjoying myself catching up on the best games of all time to be a waste of time when it is a positive experience. There are many games that I absolutely would choose to play again if I had to relive my life again. And when it comes down to it, that is what life is: one big experience. Just make sure you get enough variety of experiences (sightseeing, mountain climbing, learning skills) and do something that is a creative outlet so you don’t have any regrets. When any hobby gets to feel like a chore, that is your brain telling you to switch it up a bit so you can grow. But fun is a big part of living a quality life.

I’m not a gameing addict or nothing crazy but it’s like this over the past two years or so I just noticed that in games you do the same thing over and over and over again and then on top of that it’s not even progressing anything in real life you just keep playing doing the same thing to try to get some virtual rank that means nothing in the real world and on top of that it will just get reset at the end of the season anyways so then you gotta do it all again. And yes time to practice then on top of that they want you to spend extra money on the passes each season which those alone take several months to complete and insane amounts of time if you don’t pay money so then you feel obligated to play everyday it turns a fun game into a job and if you don’t beat the pass you wasted your time and your money. Which either way you have to waste a lot of time to get through said pass. I even quit gameing entirely for long stretches I came back time to time to play with friends but I guess I started to see through it all because I realized if your not careful you would just waste your life away on these live service games. And on top of that you end up seeing a game online it’s hyped to oblivion and then you buy it and maybe you like it but then you finish and are satisfied and then bam another game comes out and your friends convince you to get that game so then what a never ending cycle of just buy consume repeat what of those other games we swore would never get old we now have so many games we don’t even have time to play them all even if we wanted. I tried explaining my shifted mindset to my online friends who game for a bunch of hours a day like I used to but I don’t think they understood or maybe I explained it poorly as a result I now go several weeks or months without playing a single game but I try to make it a point to have game night with the boys like the good ole days or whatever but I find that video games dont hold my attention anymore with this new mindset. I may play a cupple rounds or so but I can’t seem to be able to play for more than two hours without getting bored and most of the time I get bored by an hour or less. And this is comming from somone who grew up playing games all my life I used to play for well all day during middleschool every ounce of free time I had was spent on the game but now I guess iv grown up and changed my perspective on life now has changed and my brain is just not fulfilled by the games anymore. I’m rambling but I hope I explained it well basicly my whole way I think has shifted like iv rewired what gives me that hit of dopamine now I feel a billion times more fulfilled if I do something like fold cloths or doing household chores or getting actual stuff done than gameing like before the chores and stuff were chores and boring and I’d put them off or what have you small stuff like folding cloths or something simple like tideing my room a bit but now I see the roles reversed now I procrastinate booting up the game or I find better stuff to do besides the game and that makes me feel like I’m beating the levels where now gameing feels like the annoying chore I hope this made some kinda sense it feels like my brain has broken some sort of cycle my online friends are trapped in and I’m the only one that seems I’m the only one that gets it and now as a result gameing is the chore and chores or self improvement stuff that I used to feel as boring is the thing that makes me feel like I’m beating that boss or that levle I hope I don’t sound crazy lol

It also seemed to me many times that I had developed a solid habit because I managed to maintain it for a few months however then I was back to square one as usual. I wonder how the long-term effects in this case.

for me its a bit different. you may blame this on me but i have zero fun playing games all i ever get out of them is anger and frustration. Every other hobby i do is a million times more fun for me yet im still attachedto them and if i let go i feel like a part of my life is essentially missing and that i need to go back. I go back then the same thing happens again. I only play fighting games which are quite competitive and very difficult. im not particularly good at them despite having played for a long time. I constantly go back feeling like i can never give up. I get extremely frustrated at losses or being unable to perform things that i practiced for hours. But i go back again. The end of every gaming session is just me feeling like i made the biggest mistake of my life. It feels so horrible. I delete steam. Then i reinstall it mere hours later just because now it feels wrong and out of place. man does this suck :( . The thing i have done recently was to spend most of my day outside (lectures, work, gym or studying in the library) but i still came back home last night from the library and played for like 4 hours and ended up sleeping late and not getting enough sleep and this morning im depressed and my motivation is down the dumps

Being retired at 31, single with no wife or kids depending on me, it’s extremely difficult to find anything interesting to do on a daily basis outside of video games. I go to the gym, come home and shower, maybe clean and do laundry, and I’m ultimately left with nothing to do. It’s gotten to a point where I feel like I should get a job solely for the purpose of being productive, even though I don’t need one. But then I ask myself, what’s the point of living if I’ve already achieved what’s supposed to make me happy, and I’m feeling like I should go back to the suffering of work just to maintain my own sanity? I’ve come to realize that happiness is impossible without some sort of struggle in the middle. My life is so stress free and simple, that the parts of it that are meant to be exciting and good no longer matter.

It's fun and cheap right now with these financial times. I have found myself playing a little bit too much more than usual. I just play an hour or 2 every other day just for daily battle pass challenges. I will not buy call of duty MW2 because there were nights with the beta and free weekend where I played ALL weekend long and was not productive at all. I am going to lower my dopamine intake starting new years and will lock up my pc and switch in my storage unit for a month just to get my coding portfolio done. I should have been done a long time ago but I would get distracted with what I "felt like doing" like games or binging shows or going out. I will be 40 in a few years. I never found myself addicted by when you add up the tv, the video games, junk food, alcohol, the dopamine ads up and you want more and you do more what feels good and what you prefer to do when doing the stuff you do not want to do pays off. People game me crap about not accomplishing anything in my 20's but would not explain how to get past or achieve goals. Whatever gives us dopamine is like drugs because it takes our life force and just makes other people rich, I am trying to kick off soda too.

It was easy because you had all these other areas in life pulling and calling to you. If you didn't have that it'd be way harder. So I think that's the focus. Not to quit gaming, but to find and build other areas of our lives which add value that just takes up our time. I believe only then can we choose to play in moderation, in healthier ways, if we so chiose. But we need to set timers and be mindful about it. That said, for someone having heavily been addicted. It's probably best to stop all together and find new hobbies. Lower stimuli stuff. I know my life is always more enjoyable when I am not gaming. My mind isn't always fixated on what to do next or when I can get back to playing. I can be present and meditation also becomes way easier.

I think this is exactly what I needed because I always thought it was just me who wasn't being disciplined but you changed my mindset. I always got cravings (like now) to get gaming under control and that I do it if I am disciplined but the truth is that they are just too addictive and they are exactly like drugs. And even if I can get them under control I know that the rest of my life would be spent thinking about them and not being happy in anything else but them. I also think that people will not completely understand this video if they haven't done the 90 day detox because that's when you think that you could be more disciplined and that its your fault that you cannot get games under control. Great Video. Keep it up and thank you so much.
