I agree, the fewer connections the better. Your method is very effective. With respect to the MFJ style pass-thru panel, think outside the box, just remove the bulkhead connectors and pass the coax right through the panel itself. You could always widen the hole if needed. When I consider drilling a 2-inch hole through an exterior wall of my home my immediate concern is resale value. Not a huge deal, but there would be a 2-inch hole through an exterior wall, or at least a patched 2-inch hole through an exterior wall. No issue at all if the shack was an actual shack, like a Tuff Shed out in the backyard. I'd be drilling all the holes in exterior walls as I would need, but a Tuff Shed isn't my home. Good idea about keeping critters out - steel wool. I don't think many critters would enjoy chewing through steel wool. I would have left it with just some spray foam, but then again critters might chew through that, steel wool sounds like a far better idea.
@@1912rider some great tips. Thanks for watching!! 73
With this anteena do i need to use a anteena tuner ft891 user
There is some adjustment of length to be able to dial it in, but I usually use my tuner because I have it. If I were to do it again I would buy the chameleon tactical delta loop. I have recently bought the extra parts required to do this with my MPAS lite. It seems more resonant. 73 and thanks for watching watching!
Lol, most of the handheld antenna's are dummy loads; good one. This might be a good one for me to start with.
I found it to be a useful tool for sure. I eventually put it in line with my shack setup and left it for quite some time. Thanks for watching!!
I love all your videos!!’
Thanks. It’s nice having devoted viewers like you that subscribe. 73 and thanks for watching!!
I recently used this idea. Kinda freaky drilling a hole completely through the side of my house! I drilled a small pilot hole from inside to the outside first so the holes from the hole saw would line up. Slid in the 2 1/2” pvc pipe with the 90 on the outside and caulked with silicone. Pretty much looks like a vent for a heating system. Now I’ve got great access for feed line, coax and control wires. Might be best to do this when your wife is not home.
Yeah it’s a bit unnerving to do. Glad it worked out for you. It’s what works for me and I wouldn’t hesitate to do it again. Thanks for watching! 73.
I recently bought one of these Surecom SW-102 meters. It’s a great product. However, mine looked like it was a product return that was sold to me as new. It also didn’t come with the ground plane. So, I sent it back and bought their SW-33 Plus meters, from a different seller, instead, which I think is better suited to the ht radios I have.
So I have heard somewhere that the ground plane plate is now a separate purchase unfortunately. Glad you got one that works for you. Thanks for watching! 73.

@@gregmve6gcm Thanks for the idea ! May i ask how you drilled a hole that size? I have a wood frame house.

Hi Greg! Nice Shack, thanks for the video! I'm looking to buy an Anytone AT-778UV from DXCanada, see your review there and don't see it here in your new arrange. May you share what happens with it? Jorge VE3EAD
Hey Jorge! I certainly still have the radio and it will be going in the shack again. It’s a great radio. For now I have been using the 991a for vhf/uhf because it also gives me the C4FM capability. The plan is to put my 891 in my truck and move the 991a into the HF go box. Just never got around to doing it yet. Thanks for watching and 73.
How do you power tuner ?
There’s a cable that connects the tuner to the radio.
Oliver is an awesome guy and his QRZ profile is very informative. Thanks for sharing. 73! KB9T
Do you recommend the FC-50 still? I have some problems with my dipole antenna and poor RST reports.
As of now I’ve had no issues with the FC-50. I like it and the fact that it’s made for that radio as well as fully automatic is perfect for mobile or portable use. That being said, it may not help your situation. Maybe try another antenna for comparison. 73 from VE6GCM
I have 3 of these coming into my shack, hi hi! Had no issues with critters or bugs getting in too....etc. 73
Working great! What antenna are you using?
That was my G5RV Jr. That’s my main antenna and work the world on it.
@@gregmve6gcm I bet being amplified didn't hurt?
@@ToddDunford my amplifier is just a small one, puts out about 200 - 250 watts depending on the band and tuning. But yes it helps for sure. Haven't used the VL1000 yet.
I would like to have seen you try the 70D in C4FM mode to see if the counter could read it. I have an old radio Shack Frequency Counter that is suppose to only detect analog signals but it does detect signals from my NXDN radio, but not DMR radio.
Hope to maybe do some QSOs tomorrow
I had fun today! 10 meters was hopping too. Good luck tomorrow. 73 and thanks for watching!
The conterpoise that came with the set can also be used as the antenna as a sloper
You are 100 percent correct. It’s a very versatile antenna. Thanks for watching and 73!!
I have the same hot spot the rf shark i had it for 4 years.👍💯⚡
You never used your ground plate! That’s why your SWR reading was very high! It’s very important to use it. SURECOM stopped supplying the ground plates. Greedy EBay is charging €80 for the ground plate. Greedy U.S companies are charging $50- $60. The meters cost half that price with the ground plate thrown in.
Do you run the coax from the outside of the house right to the antenna?
One length of coax from the back of the radio right to my dipole. 73 and thanks for watching!!
@@gregmve6gcm Awesome!! Thank you.
@billgrant6175 I think a direct line from the antenna to the radio would be a bad idea. You should probably have some type of inline lightning protection. Perhaps a ground rod with attached lightning arrestors right at the point where the coax is coming into the shack. From that lightning arrestor another run to the radios and/or antenna switches. Also, you'd want to have a common ground buss inside the shack with a ground strap to that ground rod outside the shack. Safety first.
Good job on the video .
Thanks for making the nice tribute. Al was a dear friend and mentor to me as well and was the heart of our radio club the last number of years. I will miss him!
A very nice tribute, sir. One of my dearest friends, and a fellow ham became a silent key in 2021. I can relate. I am very sorry for your loss.
We only had a couple years to meet Al and his family and many others in Fort Mac. He was very much an inspiration and willing to help everyone with his knowledge. We gathered many times for dinners and we always looked forward to seeing him. It saddens me to know he has left all of us as he was such an amazing person. Very sorry and will always remember and miss Al.
Thank you for taking the time to make and post this *quick review* video of the Anysecu SF-103

Cool vid and device! Would this help to align SSB on a radio?
I guess you could use it, although it’s not ideal. But you can probably get pretty close with it. Thanks for watching!!
@@gregmve6gcm Thanks for the reply!! I wanted to get closer to frequency. My voice is a little high on SSB.
How do you like the FC-50 tuner? Does it match the impedance enough and what antennas do you use it with?
I like it fine. I have used it on a dipole, and an off Center fed dipole. Worked fine. As long as the antenna is fairly resonant, it will tune up no problem.
After a year...any heat issues with radio being there? I am considering same thing
Zero issues, it’s still in the same spot and works great. Thanks for watching!!
I have a whole collection of Chameleon Antennas. I love their build quality and Made in the USA! Did not see you check out the SWR and use the tuner. What kind of readings did you have for 20m and 40m? KD9MSP
I didn’t use my analyzer, but off the video I was getting better than 2:1 swr. And that was with the counterpoise the wrong length. After reading the user guide it says to use about 25 feet and leave the rest coiled on the winder on w ground. So I suspect that will get better with the correct length. Thanks for watching!! 73 from VE6GCM
That knob just slightly changes the switching frequency and thusly, the harmonics that may have landed on your frequency. Some other switching power supplies have used this technique as well. When you can't suppress 'em, move 'em.
Thanks Don for the info. Good to know how these things work! 73 and thanks for watching!!
I just bought both of those and have yet to plug them in and use them. 73 de K6ZTM
You won’t be disappointed! They work very well together. 73 from VE6GCM.
Nice quad! What brand and band is it? What all is on that tower? Looks pretty full.
There is quite a bit on that tower. It belongs to a fellow ham and he has all sorts on it. The quad I think is 10,15,17 and 20, but I’m not 100 percent sure on that either. Thanks for watching and 73 from VE6GCM
Fun, nice to see an installment.
Thanks for watching!! 73 from VE6GCM!!
On a wire-antenna like you were using, would having the ends close to the shed and house cause deadening type issues, especially if there's metal siding in the construction? Do the signals come from the ends of the wire when transmitting, and if so then metal in buildings might be blocking them? Still much to learn on my end. Thank you for all the ham-related videos.
In a wire antenna, the whole wire radiates. The only metal near me was the aluminum roof and it may or may not interact. I think a lot of the issues were caused by poor propagation. But it’s a learning process for everyone. Thanks for watching and 73.
@@gregmve6gcm Thank you.
I was wondering about this product only the other day. :)
Greg, no matter where I get the software from..US or RU, I cannot seem to get past the error cannot open port. I have watched many videos on this radio programming and did see one that had the same issue and solve it by using the Russian version. However it did not help me. Now from what I can find out, rumor has it that windows 11 does not have a driver for the prolific 2303 cord. Can you help? 73 N6ZKI.
I’m not sure what the issue may be. Are you using the right port on the software as on the computer? Otherwise I am stumped. One thing you could also try is see if the program CHIRP can be used for that radio. Good luck and 73.
Hope to reach Europe this fall, California this summer. VE3WLX, 73
DX is lots of fun. Enjoy the hobby and thanks for watching!! 73.
I had two of 'em. Which, in truth, was one too many. Damn nice radio, though. So many nice features & easy to program off the computer too. It's the radio goes in the car for any kind of road trips (when ever it is we can get back to serious traveling again ;-) ) 73 de W8IJN
Where'd you track that mounting bracket down at? I can't seem to find them anywhere :(
The brackets to join the radio and tuner came with the tuner. The other bracket is the one that came with the radio. 73 and thanks for watching!!
