These engines kinda remind me of the Katy's H-3 pacifics built by Alco and Lima. Especially because of the boxpok drivers, Walshaerts valve gear, and their fast speed. The H-3s on the Katy could do 70mph.

They have both. The horns are less steam waste intensive and better at cutting through fog/snow... aswell as being quicker to sound.

The difference between this 1988 and what you saw of China of China in 2018 is NOT that "miraculous" as you make out to be...... All one NEEDS to do is look at the impoverishment of South Korea in the middling 1960s and then look at South Korea in the late 1990s (despite the 1997 crisis) and you'll see that the 3 decade change in China is NOT that much different from the 3 decade change in South Korea. Of course what makes China stand out IS THE SCALE.

The single video with the greatest variety in Chinese traction. Funny how many of the steam locomotives are younger than a lot of the electric equipment. The fronts of those EMU's are clearly modelled to the cab fronts of the Fliegende Hamburger from Germany, also from the 1930s.

Larger engines were not possible. The axle loading made heavier engines out of the question. Also, passing siding length prevented longer trains. Passing sidings or loops were always at stations because of lack of CTC and adoption of Russian railroad practice. American railroad practices were limited to the South Manchuria Ry early in the Japanese occupation of northeast China. The SMR imported American steam locomotives and rolling stock and bridges and shop tools. The fact that Chinese motive power and rolling stock today are fully compatible with US equipment is due to the SMR period. Also the SMR was standard gauge to prevent a Russian invasion.
