5k vs marathon
Просмотров 4214 года назад
How is training for the 5k and a marathon any different besides running more miles? Did you know that elite 5k runners still train 70 miles per week? That is still a whole lot of running! A lot of the training for the 5k and the marathon are very similar, but there are some differences we should address to make sure you are training correctly for your goals. We will also chat about why it is po...

Motivation can be so low this time of year if you live in the north. We are on month 4 of snow here in Minnesota, and there are no signs of letting up soon! Motivation isn’t always weather related of course. Sometimes we just plain don’t feel like running or have the same motivation/inspiration we once had. Today we will be chatting with Coach Jason who has been a runner himself for over 20 yea...

Mileage in long distance running: Is more always better? The importance or recovery
Просмотров 2,5 тыс.6 лет назад
There are many sources of stress in our lives. Mileage is just one of them. Try not to get caught up in the numbers or X miles per week. Every athlete is different. There is no magic formula for running mileage yielding to specific race day results. Focus on finding what works best for you.

I personally believe that running at the very top level, and by that I mean sub 2:10 marathon for men and a sub 2:30 marathon for women, it most definitely needs talent! But to be a really fast runner, and that means anything sub3 for both genders is absolutely achievable for someone who’s been active throughout life and has no preexisting health conditions that stunt potential. We can all achieve a lot, the difference is only that our journeys to that destination are very different, and that’s most definitely where most people fail because they do not do whatever it takes to reach the next level. Running is a mental game first and foremost.

Actually, running IS easy for people who are genetically suited to it. I've known people who have run a first marathon with very little training, as in only a few weeks. I've also known serious runners who have been running for years who couldn't finish a marathon despite meticulous training with weekly long runs, coaches, elaborate training plans, etc. Dean Karnazas ran 30 miles one night after being sedentary for almost a decade. There are running tutorial videos where the hosts are easily talking into the camera while running the through almost the whole video.

Body type still has to come into play. If LeBron James, or Sammy Sosa, or even a running back like Jerome Bettis had dedicated themselves to cross country instead of basketball, baseball and football, respectively, I don't think they'd have become Kipchoge.

I found that keeping a running log helps a lot... also start slow and short...gradually build up distance and speed...it takes a lot of time and patience...got to get in shape so u can continue running 5 to 6 days a week...not 2 consecutive days off...then as time goes on i.e. weeks months and years u will see big improvements... Research foods like watermelon etc. That increase muscle elasticity... Beats and beat juice etc. Increase oxygen to muscles... And running physics so u don't waste energy twisting, squeezing hands too tight, 90 degrees elbow motion hip to shoulder balances legs stride and pace... It's said running is 80% mental and 20% physical...once u get the 20, the rest 80 is keeping clear mind and staying focused and push yourself.

Great tips! I am trying to break 5 hours just finished a marathon in 5 hours and 8 minutes. I started having cramps in my calves at mile 22. Any suggestions to combat this as I had to basically walk the last10k with a few short runs in between?

Great topic! I used to never refer to myself as a runner because it felt like my running journey was just effort and I didn't have the speed or talent to actually be considered a "runner". Just the idea that we might limit ourselves on both sides of the equation is enlightening.

My fueling is pumpkin cookies. 1) They dont form crumbs that go down my windpipe and make me cough, 2) I can gum them up in my hand and I can chew on the pumpkin cookie ball as I drink water, 3) they are soft enough I dont need to chew them.

Great video. I didn't start running regularly until age 44 in 2012 and like you I love racing Miles, 5K's, 10K's & 10 miles. Have entered a couple of HM's but never raced one due to injuries. Want to do a HM at some point but have no interest in doing a Marathon as don't like running for much longer than 90 minutes.

Hi, I understand that easy runs should be slow, I've read somewhere that your long runs should be done at easy pace, how then do you suddenly run a marathon at a race pace, surely your body would be pretty shocked by this, anything I'm missing? Thanks

Thanks for sharing these excellent tips! I ran a 1:43 1/2 here in San Antonio in December on a fairly hilly course and last Sunday absolutely crashed and burned around Mile 15 in the hilly and humid Austin Marathon. I had been battling the flu a couple weeks prior, so perhaps that had something to do with it. Still, you shared some great training tips that I know will give me a better shot at running the type of marathon time I’m capable of. Thanks again!

Thanks that’s good helpful information, what I was wanting to know is, what would be the difference in nutrition would you have, in the build up in say 2 weeks before a fast 5k or 10k to say a marathon race, what is the difference in diet nutrition to do a really good fast 10k is there a difference in nutrition to do a really good marathon, hope that makes sense, cheers 😀

  • @gokiwi2642

Yeah I think the best point you made there is, try different distances & types of races, I found my 10k & half marathon times improved when I throw in some different stuff like trail races & Mountain bike riding, braking it up, can help you get back to running feeling more fresh & inspired, cool 👍
