    I photograph and scan as a hobbyist / enthusiast. Micro / Macro is part of my work. So a macro Bellows and copy down is always up. I’m simply dismounting a body to use somewhere else. It is faster, but is it better quality? Idk yet. Still comparing. But it looks nice. Nikon D850 w/ Nikkor 60/2.8D macro. The battery of a large cop stand conserve other uses throughout. As far as lights. The exact same copy stand lights that just stay there. Or any TTL flash

    A couple of reasons I chose a Pentax DSLR are the convenience and cost savings of not having to always develop film, but moreso for the simple, inexpensive metal adapter that lets me use any of the billions of lenses designed for Pentax cameras all the way back through the M42 screw mount version on hoth my digital and my MX. I also prefer the older glass on my DSLR because they give my digital photos that soft film like quality that the human eye naturally sees.

    Ever since DSLR "scanning" became a thing, I've always thought it was the most rediculours and moronic nuance to happen to photography. Dedicated 35mm scanner (or a flat bed scanner which is a compromise IMO) is by far the more superior method of scanning at home. I could talk for hours about it. I might do a video myself haha.

    • @ArmandoStreets
      @ArmandoStreets Месяц назад

      Both methods have advantages and disadvantages and most recently I have obtained better results using my digital camera. But that applies for my particular set up. The main reason I gave up on flat bed scanning a while ago was because of the annoying amount of dust I was getting on the scans coming from manipulating the negative too much in order to put it inside the scanner. It would be nice to see your take on the topic on your own video 😎

    • @TheDisruptiveYouTuber
      @TheDisruptiveYouTuber Месяц назад

      @@ArmandoStreets I use a dedicated 35mm scanner. Yeah, theres some dust on the photos sometimes but PS is goot at removing it. My scanner just sits on my desk, it's ready to rock at any time and so even if all I want to do it scan a single frame, there's no faff. To me, the most moronic thing about using a camera to take a picture of a photo taken with another camera (🤦‍♂) is that you're introducing more error. I use the best lenses I can afford so that my photos have as little distortion, as little chromatic aberration, as little noise and as much colour and contrast as possible but there'll still be some imperfections. Those imperfections will be amplified with the macro lense in your DSLR setup and your macro lens will introduce it's own imperfections, barrel distortion and vignetting more than anything. There'll be light collected by the lens that hasn't come off the negative you're "scanning" as there's light bouncing around the room. What colour is that light? How is it polorised? Is it flarring off the macro lens? Is it introducing a colour or contrast shift to your scan? Most likely. I look upon DSLR scanning in the same way as I look upon using your phone camera to take a "screen shot" of someone else's phone or a PC monitor. Fine if you simply want to make a record of something but moronic if your intention is to make the best possible copy and to presever as much detail as possible. I mean, just try to repeat it and get the same result twice. An actual scanner has fixed perameters into each of its components, it's a completely controled environment for negative and for the scanning process, a miniature lab. Everything in consistent and predictable. It's quality, controled!

    • @ArmandoStreets
      @ArmandoStreets Месяц назад

      @TheDisruptiveRUclipsr A dedicated 35mm scanner is probably the best option but must people cannot afford it. I understand your points about DSLR scanning and they are valid. Everything depends on the results the film photographer wants to get. Thank for sharing your thoughts and adding value to the conversation. I hope to see you around the channel again 😎🎞️

    Flatbed isn't one of the main methods. Those would be a dedicated film scanner like Plustek 8300 or Prime Film XA vs camera scanning. I've an Epson V550 (same as V600 - digital ICE) and flatbed scanner sucks for 35mm. It does ok for 120.

    I really appreciate you sharing this with us. The therapeutic power of photography, or any other hobby, to help us get through difficult times, emotional distress and heal ourselves is incredible. My story with street photography is pretty similar to yours. I immigrated from Colombia to Canada three years ago and, despite many migration perks, I’ve experienced some difficulties and faced hard feelings such as frustration and loneliness. That’s why I started pursuing an older photography passion I had during my university years: film photography. I found an old Olympus Trip 35 in a flea market a couple of years ago and started taking pictures now and then, going on photo walks, exploring the city and experimenting with different films and filters. Later, I added some new film cameras to my collection (looking for a Ricoh 500G is how I found you and this video), took more pictures around Canada and have been feeling better and better every day. Now, I’m learning how to develop at home and thinking how can I build a strong street film photography enthusiasts community in my city and, why not, the world.

    Back to the gym! I'm actually not a fan of Color 92, mostly because the tones and temp are easy to achieve in post on any less expensive color stock. I really treat Lightroom the same as one would have used the darkroom in the past, making color adjustments, dodging and burning as desired, on all my film scans. I would say Color 92 might be useful for anyone who avoids or disapproves of the post process altogether.

    Man RUclips is strange. I still havent found a video that considers the most expensive aspect: time. The real question is: what is the fastest option that gives me the best quality with minimal effort? All the time you spend scanning is not spent doing something else. The cost of the gear is irrelevant if you have 60 years, or more, of negatives to scan.

    One of the main advantages that smaller formats are supposed to have and NEED to have to keep up with competition, is super bright fast lenses, since they're cheaper and technically more possible to design for smaller formats. A large format lens at 5.6 is "Fast" for that, it's about as well as they can do affordably. Medium format, 2.8 is "Fast", 35mm, 1.4 is about the equivalent. half frame needs to have lenses around 1.1 to compete at a serious level (being able to use lower ISO to combat the grain, being able to get similar depth of field, etc), or at most like f/2 even if embracing many shortcomings. F/8 is bonkers. No excuse for an F/8 lens on a several hundred dollar half frame camera, that's SO cheap-ed out/ripoff.

      Hello Gavin thanks for sharing. I agree with you…would love to see wider lenses in a later iteration of this camera.

    Interesting video again. 👍 If I had extra money laying around maybe I might buy their Premium model. But as Pentax announced their upcoming half-frame compact I'm saving my pennies for that. I would suggest you to try higher ISO film with Alfie camera. Maybe even ISO 1600. Of course there will be lots of grain in pictures but then again you could use faster shutterspeeds. And it would give you some range to take pictures in indoors as well.

      Hello there and thanks for watching. Yes the Pentax looks like is going to be a cool option. Good advice, I will try a higher ISO film next time for sure 😎

    I have some problems with TMJ, it has been chronic and has gotten in the way of enjoying life for me. Luckily I have an appliance from my dentist that helps and I'm in way less pain now. I've found photography allows me to concentrate less on how I'm feeling on the inside and focus more on the beauty you can find in the outside world. Thank you for sharing your story, it's encouraging to hear someone else coped with chronic pain with the help of photography 🙏

    With all these cameras you can pre focus and open up the front of viewfinder and look through the back for correct orientation or even get a prism finder if that's what you want.

    Appreciate you sharing your journey. If you don't list the the Emulsions podcast, there's a great episode this week with Daniel Arnold. One this generation's best street photographers, he talks about walking the same circles over and over again in NYC for 15 years, quietly and mindfully, and why it does not work the same for him with digital. Film itself helps the mindfulness, not just the walking and noticing. Do look it up.

    Thank you, best of luck for your future, you are still young (am old and becoming more prone to stupid mistakes, anger with myself etc also less tolerant of criticism) some good things do happen, have been shooting B&W film for the same lenght of time as you. This is a personal message to you, please remove it, it is just how I feel at the moment.

    great info, thanks. Question for you, I shoot 99% b&w film. Would you still suggest the flat bed scanner? What about dust that I always tend to miss cleaning some of it. What do you suggest for that? Thanks in advance for your help.

    • @ArmandoStreets
      @ArmandoStreets 8 месяцев назад

      Hello my friend. I’m happy you found the video informative. Dust is definitely a big challenge as it is attracted to the film like a magnet. What I recommend is to work on a clean environment,also handle the negatives as little as possible and avoid using cotton gloves as they release loads of particles. A camera air blower also work really well and helps a lot. You will never be able to get rid of 100% of the dust but you can definitely improve it 😎
