Darrens new Cann River N Scale Victorian layout is being constructed in his new much bigger layout room. His attention to detail to the Victorian era is amazing.

Oh my gord, the amount of detail in this is stunning. So I have questions; 1) What time period is that set in? I'm guessing 1950s/early 60s 2) Castlemaine had 3 platforms? So ovbiously there were a number of main & branch line passenger services back then?
Hi Gary, not too sure of the era but hoping to get back to see the layout in the next few months. Hang in there. Thanks Rod.
In Australia, we call them "Railways". Not that other way of saying it. It is going to be pretty smart when it's all done. It would be good to see it now, 5 years later.
Where can I find the ore cars in HO?
The ore cars you see here are Blackstone made for HOn3 not HO. I have no idea where to find HO versions sorry.
Unique
It is indeed a unique Model RR. Most of the RR was scratch built, Locos, rolling stock, buildings, houses and every horse and horse drawn vehicle. It is now being dismantled unfortunately due to the health of the builder.
@@rodwarren2508 wow ok. Dismantled to be sold?
Just did some checking and the layout is spoken for. Rod.
Hmm... saw the thumb nail for this video and somehow I had thoughts of Bob Ross and happy trees jump into my head.
Thank you however I had no idea who Bob Ross was as I live in Australia and had never heard of him until well after I did my backdrop.
I have this in my favourites and when I think things are getting a bit hard to do on my N gauge I watch this for inspiration and I think, well, it can be done and buck up and get on with the job at hand. Big hands and small parts certainly make a challange out of a hobby but its worth it. I'm very impressed with your scenery, you've got it almost 100%, it look bloody great mate.
Chris This is Darren's layout that I videoed a while back. He has since moved to another house and is constructing an even bigger RR with all the components of this one. I do have some stuff to put on a video however life has got in the way the past few weeks. It will be up soon. Thanks Rod.
@@rodwarren2508 G'day Rod. It will be good to see his next layout it should be pretty good as well I would expect. Can I ask you something please. I'm having a bit of a debarkle with myself over how I'm going to make weeping willows and peppercorn trees. I have asked all different people and they say just practice and see how you go but there has to be a definitive way of doing them, surely. I don't know if I told you I am doing a wheat silo complex and farming with all scratch built silos, sheds, grain storage, elevators, Ship Creek and a couple of barbed wire canoes hoping to extend to an open spiral called Boot Hill spiral to the upper level all done in N scale. What size will Darren's new circuit be? I'll be waiting patiently with enthusiasm.
@@chriscorrigan7420 Chris I have never attempted weeping willows, I'm guessing using twisted wire as a trunk and then have the wires for branches hang down. Coat with diluted NO-More-Gaps using an old paint brush to give some volume to the trunk and branches. Let dry then paint, spray and add smaller grass. Not sure how big Darren's new shed is just B big. Rod.
Absolutely loved the layout. Bob Ross would have been proud. How long did it take to build it.
Hi Lee, probably only a couple of years and sadly it did not get finished. Living in Australia I had no idea of Bob Ross until some folks mentioned it on my channel. Thanks for your kind words. Rod.
Love this layout, love the transitions towards the backdrop, the ‘empty space’ of the different scenes, the less is more kind of modeling. Some great and magnificent blending all over the place. Cool angles, with the backdrop going a bit higher than on average, it all creates a realm of depth illusion, which goes beyond the visual aspect of the layout and leaves plenty for the beholder’s imagination!!
Hi Vincent thanks for your kind comments. Barry has done a great job with this layout and the work he put into the scenery. I was the fortunate one to paint the backdrops for him. Unfortunately this RR is no more as he has pulled it all down and now building another N Scale layout based on CP. I hope to get some video of it over the next few months. Rod.
Great looking scenery, like your Pine Trees. Bob
Thanks for visiting
WOW...nicely done!! I hope this is just the first of many videos presented on this HOn3 layout....
Sorry Mark this was the last you will see of this RR. Barry has pulled it down already and has moving back to N Scale. I could not talk him out of it. We mourn its loss.
Rod, you are so fortunate that you have been able to realize your model railroading hobby dreams throughout most of your life. Not everyone stands as fortunate as you, so count your blessings. I was a teenager living with my mother the last time that I built and owned a model railroad, a 4 ft. × 6 ft. N scale layout. Since those teenage years, I haven’t had another layout - but not for lack of wanting one. Life and work just got in the way. Now I'm 61 years old and still don't have a layout. In recent years, I've amassed quite a collection of N-scale trains (locomotives and rolling stock), Kato Unitrack and even some structure kits, but space, time and money still prevent me from building my own layout. It’s a sad situation indeed. Now driving a long-haul semi-truck occupies most of my days and, after supporting my wife and daughters from this trucking job, not enough time and money remain to build a model railroad. It’s killing me. But my hope will never die. My N scale dream lives on even if it is only a dream now and nothing more. -from Thomas Lincoln Pilling
Thanks, I had to work hard at it to, it didn't just happen. We raised three children, my wife did not work and I had several good jobs. Many took me away from home weeks at a time all around Australia and overseas. I found a way, so press on. Oh I am now 79 going on 80.
Congratulations on producing such a well put together video and documenting the evolution of your modelling expertise. As with all modelers I presume it will never be considered finished, however looks great as is 👍👍👍
Thanks for you nice comments. The RR was almost complete all bar a few more buildings in the town of Ponca. We downsized our home in 2016 and fortunately a good friend purchased the whole lot. It has been fitted with extra stuff into his upstairs area. The CTC signaling is under revision and should be with fingers crossed finalized by the end of this year. I hope to get around and do a new video of the Now called SF RR Middle Division. Rod.
Simple Perfect👍🏻
Thank you Michael.
I keep coming back to this video, great layout. Have you seen the layout recently, any chance of another video?
Hi Brett. No unfortunately I have not visited since taking this video. We have been in and out of lock-down for almost 21 months here in Melbourne and limited to where we could travel. I should make contact with Graham and get back there. He sure is a fantastic modeller. Rod.
Nice video Rod, of a wonderful layout.
Many thanks!
Thanks for that wonderful trip through memory lane! If I attempted to do a similar video it would have two slides of some plywood and poorly put together track!!
Thanks, I did it some time ago most for a few mates and I that get together every Friday. I was unsure how it would be received. Thanks for your kind words. Rod.
What I like: trackplan ,scenery ,colors ,rocks, background. What I dont like:that it is not mine
Thank you Guaard Sky I am enjoying building this RR.
@@rodwarren2508 i belive it. I also have a shelf layout I like it very much too.

Hi Rod,new subscriber, saw your vid by chance, beautiful, but what stopped me in my tracks,no pun intended, was the last song,"sunflower", I was born and raised on deep purple ,zeppelin and sabbath, but I'll tell you what, this song on headphones just got me,even saved it to favorites, wow incredibly calming, thank you ,awesome channel by the way 👍👍
Thank you Louis and thanks for subscribing. A good friend put me onto this music, it is soothing.

Very nice Rod, thanks for sharing!
Thank you, happy to share.
Great to see an update Rod. Was starting to experience some withdrawal symptoms. Excellent work as always.
G'day Ray. Thanks its been too bloody cold in the garage lately so motivation has been down a bit. Winter is here so it might be a while before I hit it hard again. Thank you for your kind comments.
nice modeling!
Thank you.
This layout has been torn down due to the owner downsizing.
Nice
Thanks Lance. I have not had a chance to revisit Grahams layout unfortunately. It is a beautiful layout and the details are something else.
That is a awesome layout
Thanks Chris we had fun building and showing the TRC. It is now gone.
Very nice layout. Thanks for sharing
Thank you.
When zi went to Buena Vista High in Colorado. I was a member of the Railroad club at the courthouse museum. So many years ago I believe all are passed. I remember Mr. Delaney who owned Delaneys Depot Restruant by the Railroad in BV
Obviously you have some fond memories.
Wow Sir!. I can only try to do half as great as your beautiful work. Thank you for sharing and the inspiration!!!..
Thanks for that. I watched a lot of DVDs before I ventured into this part of model railroading. Dip your toe in the water and have a go.
Thanks for the video Rod. I only saw this layout once, in its very early days. Barry did some excellent work, and I'm sure the next layout (RGS?) will be even better.
HI Ron. Yes it was a very well done layout. Hope to catch up soon. Rod.
C’est absolument magnifique. Quel talent! Awesome
Thank you.
What a great looking proto-freelanced HOn3 railroad!
It was Mark. Barry is a very good modeller. We feed off one another all the time sharing tips, models even. I painted all his backdrops for him and he helped me build my newest peninsular some months ago now. I think I'm booked to paint his new backdrops too.
This is the most exciting time of a model railroad. I also model of the Monarch Branch. That has such exciting operational opportunities especially with the switchbacks.
Hi Kent. I am only using the names of towns and not modeling them as per the prototype. Big move for me to HOn3 from N Scale after starting in 1969.
Great build, love the colours of rocks, scenery and the way the backdrops blend into each other, a build to really be proud of! How did you paint the rocks? I will look forward to future posts.
Thanks Colin, just used water colour paints and blended them in whilst wet.
@@rodwarren2508 Great, I will take that on board, I have done similar , I need to practice more! thanks a lot for the reply
Suburb work and layout great work on the landscape looks so real good job one of the best I've ever seen thanks for sharing this
Thanks Tony, it was a sad day when I had to pull it down. My new Monarch Branch in HOn3 should fill the void hopefully.
Love the detail, it makes me go back to the layout.
It is a very fine layout indeed.
Station ad surrounding buildings ae exquisite. well done
Haven't been back for a while however Graham does do exquisite work.
Seems that you grew up with Bob Ross painting shows during the 70ies 😉😉
Living in Australia I had never heard of him when I started painting backdrops in the early 90's. Did purchase two DVDs' late 1990's from Daryl Huffman. They were a great help whilst building my other layouts, especially the Lost Creek.
@@rodwarren2508 And Daryl was inspired by Bob as he told me some 10 years ago
Rod...1 problem with this video - it is too short! I look forward to your videos and photos of your layout, as they are great inspiration.
Thanks Mark a ways to go yet. Waiting on a couple of kits to start scenicking Montrose which is on the new peninsular.
Thanks for sharing, you have a beautiful layout Rod.
Thank you.
😊
Thanks.
Looks Great Rod. The backdrops look fantastic.
Thanks 👍Brendan they are coming along.
Inspiring stuff the backdrops are magnificent they really make the layout so realistic even when no trains running looking forward to seeing some running sessions
Thanks Noel.
Very impressive...I like the trackplan and how you've blended it into the garage. Well done!
Thank you.
Beautiful layout, and wonderful work. It is just a terrible shame that it isn't done in On3 instead of On30. 30 in gauge was terribly rare in the old American west, whereas 36 in gauge was by far the most common. Ever considering widening to 36" gauge? People go to great lengths to have historical authenticity, but then ignore something as glaring as the correct gauge. Too bad. Love your trees and forests, though.
Thsnks for the comments. The layout is no more. Dismantled several years ago so we could move house.
Absolutely fantastic! What scale is it and is there any chance of a track plan?
This is On30 scale and sorry no track plan available.
Awesome, Truly inspiring!! What is the average distance from fascia to backdrop and do you have a methodology to determine the track height above the bench work?
Without measuring it the benchwork averages between 18 inches and 14 or less. Sorry but I do not know what you mean about track height above benchwork. I use L Girder and that is about 5 inches below the ply that the cork under the track sits on. Trust this helps. Thanks for your comments.
@@rodwarren2508 Sorry probably not worded very well. I think you answered my question. The track is 5" above the bench work.
Rod...really enjoying this video series on your HOn3 layout build!
Thanks Mark. Its cold here in Melbourne and too cold to be in the garage. We are in total lockdown for the next 4 weeks so I might get more done on the Layout.
