Life in Paraguay
Новая Зеландия
Добавлен 5 сен 2023
Want to know what it's like to live in Paraguay?🤔
In October 2022 we left our home in New Zealand to embark on a journey to find a new place to live! Sadly our ‘slice of paradise’ was changing. We no longer felt like we could pursue our lifestyle dreams in NZ.
Our first stop was Guatemala. From there we travelled down through El Salvador, Nicaragua and Costa Rica looking for a place to call home. Then we heard great things about Paraguay and decided it was worth looking in to.
We love it here but like any new country it takes time to get settled and get the basics organised - especially when you don't speak fluent Spanish.😬
Join us for the adventure & lots of information about our new home in Paraguay!

He too had issues managing the roundabout 'rules', so I thought it's time to shed some light on the weird & wonderful Paraguayan roundabout! Definitely not the appropriate use of roundabouts in my humble opinion. And can say in most of western Europe they are used and observed as you describe they are in AU and NZ, only on the other side of the road. It's not got anything to do with which side you drive on but simply etiquette and rule adherence I think
Hi.. Can I ask a doubt. Is black pepper grown in paraguay
Hi. Sorry, I don't know. I haven't heard of anyone growing it here but maybe there is. IF I hear anything I will let you know.
@OurLifeinParaguay thanks
Can foreigners own property there?
Yes, but the challenge is moving funds is you're not a resident. You then have to do everything from you O/S bank account and that can cause issues as transferring funds here is not straightforward.
@OurLifeinParaguay awesome,tnks for reply
@@keithdouglas9848 No problem. That's a factor that favors buying cheap, solid investments Much easier to handle that kind of money.
I'll take it! Anyone want to partner on this?
what is the electrical output used in Paraguay? amps, hertz cycles, volts ?

I always enjoy watching your videos mate, I just moved to Asuncion 3 weeks ago, hope to bump into you some day, would love to have a chat
Awesome, please let us know if you're up Caacupe way and we will aim to catch up. Thanks for watching.
As Always, Very Enjoyable. Thank You.
Yellow Afternoon. Great to see you again.
I just found your channel and I like it so far, keep up good job ;-) I also like the price (15:40) for this house. Can you please tell us roughly, how much would it cost to do all necessary work in and around the house by hiring local builders? Thank you so much for your answer!
Hi there, I'm not sure what you would consider necessary (I might have a different set of considerations)? But to install a ventilation fan, a proper electric hot water heater, security on windows, alarm system of some sort, maybe some form of security on the walls perhaps. It's hard to say, but it would only be maybe 3-5k USD Max I would guess.
Thank you for that follow-up even though it wasn't me that ass.
@@OurLifeinParaguay I agree; it should not be all that expensive. However, it all depends who you hire to do the work, and how much money they think you may have as a foreigner; that's the tricky part. It is in these things that it pays to have a local friend approach local workers. Good quality work also usually costs a little more,
@@jgonz260 Agreed. Since we've been here a number of foreigners have arrived who have skills also...electricians, cctv installers, builders. The challenge is, every time a foreigner is ripped off the more likely they are to turn to other foreigners. This is something local tradesmen need to come to terms with sooner rather than later.
Very cool seeing an option on the cheaper side. Thanks for your work
Nice my friend! Nice nice nice! It's very secluded BUT loving the price-tag and modernity!!! Also am glad that you are showing people more viable options as I try to do as well on my channel, even though I'm more of a city guy myself. But don't get me wrong, I've known of Caacupe's charm for over a decade now.
South East Asia is a couple decades ahead of Latin America, maybe even more. Problem with LATAM is they are still colonized even though they formally received independence, Spain and the West isnt gonna let them develop. The "hot water heater" is still used in new condos in Mexico, its weak.
There's merit in 'what you say. With any country, its fate and progression often relies how bigger players feel about it. In this crazy world though sometimes 'developed' is not necessarily a positive thing.
@@OurLifeinParaguayEspecially like your last sentence as that's my personal view.
If you want to be in a place that's already 'developed' it seems like you shouldn't move to Paraguay from what I can tell. As someone in Toronto, Canada, right now it's for sure not always what it's cracked up to be. Life is still getting tougher for people here and there are a lot of crappy trades people around as well.
@jonny-p1c8d. I think your statement is a little too general. It really depends on the country. Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, etc., are pretty well developed, and consequently much more expensive than Paraguay. In the end it really depends on what you are looking for. The more developed the country, the more the taxes and the higher the cost of living. Paraguay has wide gaps in socioeconomic classes with big differences between the haves and the have nots. Same with Peru. In Paraguay, there are beautiful free-standing homes in Asuncion as well as high rise luxury condos but they aren't cheap at all. Construction is presently booming in the country,
@ Ive travelled around Latam for 2yrs, no where i went there can compare to the level of convenience, value, and service SEA offers. Like i said Latam is still colonized so their commerce is funded mainly through Western investment banks which inflate prices there. In addition the political power the US has over Latam is such that the biggest economies of Latam, Mex. Arg, Br, Chile, all are forced to import US downstream oil product that equate to anywhere from 20-30% of those countries total import from the US, making manufacturing costs higher for them. Another example is the US blocking Mex from having a high speed rail built by China; so Mex had to settle for overpriced French trains for the Tren Maya, which the overall construction is already $26B USD and still not complete. Meanwhile China is building HSR all over SEA. SEA countries just enjoy a much higher standard of living at lower prices because the common person is more business savvy so prices are dirven down and they don't need Western banks to come in and claim a stake and profit from the local economy like Latam does.
Thanks for the property tours.. can you actually aquire good tradespeople to say..redo the shower..or do you need to do most things yourself? Also..does solar get used much over there? Another rather big question.. if we say started a business over there like.. pressure washing / soft washing etc, once in the country..can you make reasonable money if you are relying on the locals to be your clients? 🇦🇺
Thanks for watching. Finding competent tradespeople can be a challenge. It depends where you are and who you know. They're here, you just need to find them and not just trust your feelings about the person...because you can be fooled as to their claims of competence. In regard to pressure washing, again, it would depend where you are located. In general however I would say it would be difficult to make money that way. You have to remember, labor is cheap here and so they'd would just as readily hire some people to do the cleaning. Even if the end result was not as good, they would generally tend to hire people as pressure washing isn't something widely known. In regard to earning, there's options. I think I need to do a video about this.
That sounds like the right kind of return that I'm looking for. Thanks. I got to remember where that BUFFET is. LOL
I saw that Buffet and was wondering what sort of food is served there. For an older single person a buffet can sometimes be a nice option to have.
No encouragement needed here. I'm with you. Minimal or no deposit, especially if there are still unanswered questions about the property. If and when I move there I will take an active part in participating with any groups that want to try to sway legislation and local attorneys to adopt objective business practices, such as having impartial third parties hold escrow funds.
I did not know about the widow makers until you showed us. I was looking for an airbnb for my next trip to P. and I almost booked one until I show the bathroom with the widow maker. Perhaps you saved my life! 😂
I'm glad if we saved your life. TBH we've used these things a lot and haven't had any issues. But I imagine they are called that for a reason!
Some good sense there, but unfortunatly a number of things that are not quite right. Once it is agreed to buy a property a contract is signed and a deposit payed. That should be 5 - 10% and yes goes to seller. There is no one else to hold it. Then if seller pulls out buyer has law behind them to get deposit back
Hi Simon, if the seller decides not to return the deposit what law is it that compels the seller to return the deposit? Can you please give us the reference to that legislation? We'd be keen to see that because contract lawyers who specialise in this area tell us that in this case the only recourse is to take the seller to court, and court action generally costs more than the amount of deposit the buyer is trying to recoup. Bear in mind, there are many scenarios where sellers can claim they haven't pulled out of the deal, but nevertheless the deal can fall over. We have seen this happen. The people involved demanded the deposit back, the seller refused. Where to now Simon? In regard to the deposit paid, there is no legislation that stipulates any percentage. It can be a $100, and in fact agreements can be made with no deposit paid as it's a private contract and all parts are negotiable.
@OurLifeinParaguay i like you am no lawyer, but searching has confirmed what I have been told. If the seller pulls out the law says they must return deposit, plus possibly legal fees. No reference online as to exactly what law. If they are diffifult that does mean courts and once anything gets into the legal system it can take forever and rack up fees. So trust and having a good notary from day one is vital. As for the amount, it could be $1, but the norm in Paraguayan to Paraguayan sales is 5 - 10%.
@simonsparaguay Trust and a good notary can't prevent a seller choosing not to pay a deposit back. And when it gets to that point the only recourse is Court. Apart from the expense, there's several reasons why a foreigner would want to avoid that scenario. This is one of few countries that does not do this via an escrow. I recently spoke to a lawyer who advised she has a constant stream of buyers coming to her in this situation. I don't need to be a lawyer to see the 'standard' practice puts the buyer in a vulnerable situation. Everyone must navigate their own path but if someone wants to sell me a property my interests must also be protected. That's standard business practice in most parts of the world.
You seem to like Caacupe. Why in particular?
So many reasons we should do a video. Proximity to Asuncion, minimal agricultural chemical exposure, diverse ethnic/economic mix, interesting towns, spiritual capital. Caacupe is the spiritual capital of the country, some might call it the heart. It's maintained accordingly. Not to say there's not other awesome locations, but this area ticks more of our boxes than any of the others.
Excellent subject timing! I’ve been having a long think about what we want in retirement, especially after watching yesterday’s discussion about how what we would call “earnest money" is handled in Paraguay. As well as how difficult getting to the hospital would be in a more rural property. I was going to ask what you thought about living in rentals as a forever strategy in Paraguay and then this video pops up and I’m like YES! I’m wondering is there’s a private hospital, perhaps that one you went to, near enough to Caacupé, that there is a private ambulance/health plan you can enroll in?
stay in the middle of the road!!

Thanks Adam, lovely little house with a lot of potential! We’re hoping to get to Paraguay in April sometime God willing
Nice one, we hope to meet you here perhaps.
Thanks for the great content. Here is something else to consider, alot of countries are watching their economies and currency collapse right before their eyes and are looking to park their money elsewhere. This is an unprecedented time where alot of people are feeling uncertain and a sense of urgency
Much thanks
Thanks for tuning in.
🙏Thanks, Adam, solid advice as usual! 🙏
It makes no sense that you give a deposit to the seller with no contract signed and that he can just keep it without consecuences if he does not continue with the sale. In Spain the seller and the buyer sign a private contract called contrato de arras. If the buyer changes his mind he has to reimburse the amount given. But if the seller changes his mind he has to reimburse double the amount, so it is in his interest to conclude the sale. It will be better thou to have it deposited in a escrow account as Adam says. Thanks for all these videos about buying property in Paraguay, that are badly needed.
Thanks for the message. Yes, in Paraguay the same thing is supposed to happen. Sign contract, get back deposit plus that again if the seller plays games...but in practice there's not viable mechanism to recoup the deposit. Sure, take them to Court...as I say, no viable mechanism. The buyer is at the mercy of the seller.
Good advice, much appreciated! I've been looking into Ecuador and believe what you say about caution with downpayment likely applies to other South American countries as well. Things are done differently in South America. The safeguards westerners are accustomed to often don't exist. We must check to make sure there are no relatives with claims to the property, make sure no one has been camping on it for long enough to have a legal right to remain there, make sure it's not indigenous land that cannot actually be sold, and hire our own property inspector to be sure of the condition, in addition to the down payment scam issue you addressed.
Absolutely. Check, check, check.
Great info and content. Two crazy things in Paraguay: Buying property Roundabouts
Very good information. I would recommend contracting a lawyer as well. Or a real estate agent (credenciado) - Real Estate Agency: Re Max - Century 21, for example. First and foremost you ought to certify at the "Escrivania" if the property is really "Titulado". This is the first step. You should have a bank account in Paraguay and the Paraguayan "ID". Donnot buy properties only with private "contracts". It´s not safe. Be Careful! I just help Brazilians.
Thanks for the advice. We have had some good experiences with agents here, but have also heard of issues others have encountered. Generally though they seem to be ok...apart from a few who try to hike up prices to the level of obscenity.
Have you heard any bitcoin for property transactions in Paraguay yet?
Not personally. I imagine it's been done though.
But Bitcoin is only used by criminals lol
Excellent content and insight. Very valuable information. Thanks for sharing.

that's how it is in Europe and UK. You need to change the lane before exiting. You stay on the most outer lane only if you exit at the first exit. It's how it is supposed to be. Now in some countries the law changed, and you, on the outer lane, need to give way to the inner lane that wants to exit the roundabout. That is all
Oh thanks for the advice. It's interesting to see how people have different feelings about the roundabout depending where they come from. The problem I have is, if a car (Car A) stays on the outside lane because it's going to exit at the first exit, and there's also a car (Car B) in the inside lane that also wants to exit at that exit point, Car B would have to slow down or stop to wait for Car A to exit. Then cars behind car B are effected. It makes no sense to me. In the countries I have lived in I can't think of a roundabout that had more than 1 lane. If the roundabout was on a busy road they would just make the roundabout bigger so that more vehicles could fit on it. I understand, everyone has different feelings about this, but I can say 100% until I came to PY I saw very few issues on roundabouts. But here I see near misses all the time.
