History Timelines in your Homeschool

AmblesideOnline and other Charlotte Mason curricula emphasize history timelines. In this video I talk about the hows and whys of history timelines, and encourage mamas to keep it simple and stay out of the way. EDIT 8/17/23: I have had some questions about how exactly we divided up the years per page. Generally, we did 100 years/page until 1400, then 50years/page until 1700, then 25 years/page ...

Our eldest daughter graduated high school after completing AmblesideOnline's years 1-12. We celebrated with a ceremony in May 2021 featuring readings by her sisters (from Narnia, Little Women, Psalms, and White Christmas), a slide show, a congregational hymn, remarks by her piano teacher and mentor, a charge from her youth minister, and a benediction from our pastor. Thinking about homeschooling? 7 things to consider
Thanks for sharing. This was so encouraging
I loved watching this! Thank you for sharing. It gives me hope
You're welcome! I need to do an update. She's about to graduate from college and has even more perspective on her AO education now!
This is such a blessing for those of us who use AO, but also it can be an encouragement for all home educators. You and your daughter are delightful!
Thank you! I'm so glad it was an encouragement to you!
Great video, thank you! I have a Y3, Y5, Y7, and Y9 -- do you think it is okay to include the Y3 in Plutarch or would you keep him separate with Beesly?
Our youngest sat in for Plutarch when she was little. I didn't ask for narrations but she was happy to be with us. I wouldn't worry about adding Beesly!
Thank you so much for this! I didn’t even consider there wouldn’t be a space for the younger ones to add onto a family timeline! I also really love, “let it be theirs!” 😊
I'm so glad it was helpful to you!
When you say “read through the books” do you skin them? Read through them cover to cover? What if you have multiple children in different years?
Prereading is helpful but not absolutely necessary before beginning AO. Certainly look at any books that have a red footnote on the AO page (indicating more mature or potentially offensive content). Usually the footnote will be pretty specific, so you don't have to read the whole book, just that bit. With multiple children, I just concentrate on prereading what i can of my oldest child's year. I certainly didn't preread anything I'd be reading aloud!
Curious in what ways the schedule changes for each child in years 5-12? Do you mean in the AO booklist or in the other subjects?
AO selections rarely change, but each year adds more time for each student. Also, our extracurricular schedule varies a great deal from year to year. Did that answer your question?
This is such a helpful video, even after using AO for a few years I still gleaned some gems
I'm so glad!
Revisiting your videos again as we prep for our year. I’m so curious how things have been going for your kids since this video was posted 3 years ago. My husband and I both work in healthcare. I am sure your daughter is going to be an excellent clinician ❤
Thanks so much! She is scheduled to take the MCAT in September and apply to med school. She hopes to be a family physician in a rural area. She's had a great three years in college and has enjoyed many extracurriculars and found a wonderful church home. It's been such a joy to see her grow!
How do you submit your work at the end of the year? This was our first full year using Ambleside. With so many books per subject, how do you word that in your end of year grade submission?
Our state doesn't require anything, thankfully! For our high school transcript, I included a document outlining all of the books read through the four years of high school to flesh out the very dry stats of the standard transcript. Something like that could be done if your state requires it.
As a mom with young ones just starting our HS journey, I enjoyed this so much. I could see the care and loved that you put into your daughter's education. I hope my children will be as wise to say that they want to bring honour to God through their work as your daughter did.
Thank you so much for this! It’s lovely to have someone with such experience using Ambleside Online, give their tips. I have been thinking and reading about so many new things with this curriculum, that as a newbie homeschooler, I wanted to just give up and get a way more open and go, consumer friendly curriculum. But I know I would regret it long term, so again, thank you. Steps I can do 👌 xx
So glad this helped!
Thank you! Could you do a video on planning and implementing multiple children’s AO year? I’m looking at 3 kids in my homeschool next year. How do you have time for all of the different readings? Thanks!
I know she didn't do this but I'm using AO for Groups and it's helped a ton! Personally I like the individual years better but Groups uses the same books, just in a different rotation. Once the kids are more independent, they can spin off into their own individual years. My 7 and 10 year olds are currently in Form 1B together because Y4 was challenging for my 9/10 year old coming from public school.
Also, she talks a bit about this in her placement video:)
Most helpful, thank you!
I really appreciate your interviews. I came across your daughter #2 interviews first, which m then led me to this. All three of you are blessed and beautiful people and so encouraging to us as we are just starting AO. I have only one and he is doing Y1 even though he is really in third grade because I just couldn’t pass up the history and some of the beautiful options (at some point I need to figure out how to catch that up!) It’s so refreshing to hear that is enough. Even though I am confident in Charlotte Mason and the lovely ladies who created AO it is nice to see and hear the anecdotal evidence and stories, and just to see how well composed, educated, and poised your daughters have become. Thank you!
How lovely Melissa! Very encouraging to me. Especially after a trying day with a 1 yo, 4 yo, Y1 and Y5. Thank you for sharing your life with us ❤
I'm glad it was encouraging to you!
Love this interview. So great to see the fruit of homeschooling.
Love this!😊
Thanks for your videos. I’m enjoying them. Just subscribed. Timeline has always been an “extra” for our family but I really want it to come to life and be fun. We have 4 daughters. Love raising girls. I also have a channel mainly about homeschooling and it would be fun to be friends and connect here 😊
Sorry I'm just now seeing this! I always love connecting, especially with fellow girl moms :)
This was so valuable and encouraging. You must be so proud of Amelia! She has such a bright future ahead of her. Those tips about the ACT and dual-enrollment in later years are so helpful. I've just discovered AO after homeschooling for a couple of years. This year I will transitioning my 3 elementary children into it. I'm so excited to start! I have been spending every spare moment on lesson plans.
I am excited for you! You have some great years ahead of you. AO has been so good for all of us!
This was such a very helpful video, thank you. I have appreciated your videos so much this spring/summer as we have been preparing to start using Ambleside for the fist time with Y1, Y3 & Y5. Your placement video was very helpful to me as well. Thank you again for taking the time to make these videos and share what you have learned ♥️
Thank you! I'm so glad you have found them helpful! Blessings to all of you as you begin AO!
That was wonderful!! Thank you for sharing!
This was a great video. Thank you for making it, it helped me. You are lovely to listen to. Blessings to you!
Thank you! I'm so glad it was helpful to you!
Thank you so much for sharing this video <3 My oldest just turned five and the end still brought tears to my eyes. It looks like you've raised your daughter well and that she'll thrive as she moves into new seasons of life. That what it's all about, right? What a blessing.
Thank you! She is home now after her second year away at college and she is doing great!
You are so encouraging! Thank you!
Thank you!
What grammar curriculum did you like and use for year 6
We used Easy Grammar 5. It was given to us and it covers everything we needed to cover so I've kept using it with all of the girls!
Thank you. I'll have to look into that!
Hello, quick question did you supplement with any other type of curriculum while using Ambleside? Let say for like language arts?
No, we followed CM's guidelines for narration, copywork, and dictation in the early years. We did one year of grammar in middle school (Easy Grammar) and another year of grammar as ACT prep in high school.
About how long did your students spend reading lessons per day in the middle years? Say year 5-7?
I would love to know this as well
Thank you for sharing these interviews. My oldest is only in Y4, but I love hearing from your graduates. What lovely young women your daughters are!
Thank you! I hope it was encouraging to you!
May be hard to explain to kids but its honestly all about what level they are in not based on age (age is just a guide). Not all kiddos of the same age will do the same year. So 2 kids age wise a year apart maybe 2 years apart may be able to do the same year depending on their ability.
True! Homeschooling gives us the flexibility to customize their education to be challenging but not overwhelming.
So helpful! Thank you.
This was really helpful and reassuring, especially when you explained how nature study creates a solid foundation for science later on. Thank you!
Thanks for your encouragement!
Hi, I had a quick question. Did you keep a log book? Or could you share any tips for keeping notebooks? I like to keep things simple but I also want to make sure I am keeping good records. Again thank you for your videos, hope you continue growing your channel.
Our state doesn't require any records, so if your state does you will need to follow those guidelines, but for us I just used the term schedules from the AO site to mark what readings we had done and kept those as my "logbook." Each girl has her own spiral notebook where we write daily assignments and that's where her written narrations, copywork, and other notes go. Some of my girls have preferred 3-ring binders - whatever works for them! It can be very simple :)
This was so helpful. Love your videos.
Thank you!
Super helpful video, thank you!
You're welcome! Thanks for your encouragement!
Thank you for the wealth of information in your videos! I’ve been wanting to begin AO with my children but I haven’t made the leap! My daughter and I are going through Stories from the History of Rome by Mrs. Beesly, a very slow intro to Plutarch. I’ve been a bit nervous about having my ten year old read Plutarch on her own. She loves reading historical books with me and honestly she just loves doing one to one schooling with me but I have 5 children and one is a toddler 😂 which is why I haven’t gone full AO yet. You staying that you read it out loud made me realize that I can modify AO and that my child doesn’t have to be reading all this on her own at ten years old. There may be children who can and I believe she could read it herself but I know she wouldn’t like it and it could possibly create some anxiety on her over it. I want to give them a solid CM education but I’m trying to find the balance! Anyway Ty! It was a lightbulb moment realizing I don’t have to do exactly what it says!!!
I'm so glad it was helpful! Yes, Plutarch is best read aloud, imo. It lets us experience it together and have great discussions. Blessings as you enjoy AO!
Love this! I am going to rewatch it and take some notes, great ideas.
Hello, Your videos are great! Quick question, how did you best connect with other families in your area?
Thank you! I found some from our local homeschooling facebook groups. There's a Charlotte Mason in Community page that tries to keep up with local in-person groups, so maybe search there. And if nothing comes up maybe start one and advertise on local homeschool social media! Hope you find your people :)
@@cairparavelacademy Thank you for the reply. Very helpful. I love your channel. It’s great when there is no fluff and just honest and simple.
@@livmuller7109 Thanks so much for your encouragement ❣
This was incredibly helpful! This is my first year with Ambleside and I have been so overwhelmed with the timeline. I haven't even started it this year! YIKES! I even have a timeline in my amazon cart to help but after watching your video this has helped scale back my anxiety about this project and how to go about it! Thank you so much for being so practical and reminding me it's all about the process NOT the product! I will definitely be subscribing to your channel!
I'm so glad it was helpful! Thank you for your encouragement!
Thank you sister. 😊
Hi! When you mentioned that your daughter used illustrations from Abraham Lincoln world, are those her own drawings that you scaled down and printed or from the book?
She used those illustrations as inspiration for her own drawings. She probably traced some elements, especially at the beginning :)
@@cairparavelacademy i love that💜 as im doing a timline with my Y1 my artistic juices are kicking in and I almost want to keep my own as well but don't want to rain on his parade ya know!?
@@haleyfink6325 You might enjoy keeping a commonplace book of your own!
This video has blessed me! Thank you!! I hope to see more soon!
Are you able to make a video on habit training?
Yes, that would be a great topic! I'm hoping to make some more videos this winter so I will add that to my list. Thank you!
@@cairparavelacademy Thank you! I love your content!
I have a question. I have my 7 yr old and 5 year old in YR1. We just started this past school year and we are all enjoying it. My 5 year is really on top of narratives and listening to the stories. But I worry that my 2nd grade being in year one will not be able to complete YR12. She is still learning how to read independently (dyslexic) but I’m wondering if when she reads more independently I can skip a year. What do you think?
Hi Joy! The upper years of AO are very flexible, so don't worry about "finishing" with year 12 right now. Plenty of AO kids graduate after year 10 and are completely prepared for whatever next steps they take. The important thing is to have your children in the right place right now. As your child gets more independent you might decide to skip ahead if she needs more challenge, but you can make that decision later.
@@cairparavelacademy Thank you!
Thank you so much for sharing these! It’s so good to see children who are graduating using Ambleside online. I’ve been researching so much. Also cool that you’re in Alabama! So are we. ♥️
Hi! You're welcome! Alabama is a great place to homeschool :) Let me know if I can help with anything!
I hope you can make more videos!
Thanks for your encouragement :)
I loved both of your graduate videos! It helps a lot when deciding if AO would be a good option or not. I was wondering if you kept a record of anything for their homeschool? I am starting homeschooling in Alabama and wondering the best way to keep records while using AO. Thanks for the videos!
Hi Alyssa! As you may already know, Alabama doesn't require anything of homeschoolers, so your only records would be for yourself. Personally, until high school transcripts, I just kept the AO term schedules that we marked as we finished readings for my own mementoes. Let me know if you have any other questions! It is so easy to homeschool in Alabama :)
With GWW the read daily, do you have your kids make an entry for every reading in those books or maybe choose one or two readings from each week?
Ideally each reading will have an entry. It shouldn't take more than 5 minutes :)
I’ve been considering starting my Year 1 daughter on Math U See, so it’s encouraging to hear you had a good experience with it!
It's been great for us!
Hi Melissa, thank you so much for your helpful videos. I have 4 children coming from a textbook background. They are 4th, 5th, 8th, and 9th. Should I do groups with Form 2 and Form 3? Or should they do individual years? I'm feeling a little unsure about how to approach this.
Hi Melissa! I'd let them have their own years. Groups is most useful for a cottage school or for the younger years before they are reading independently. However, lots of large families enjoy doing a Morning Time together with some group subjects. I did a video on that if you're interested :)
@@cairparavelacademy checking now on your video. Thank you!
